Producer Information A 1990 vacation in Argentina was all it took. For third-generation winemaker Jean Bousquet, it was love at first sight. The object of the Frenchman’s desire: the Gualtallary Valley, a scenic, remote, arid terrain high in the Tupungato district of the Uco Valley in Argentina’s Mendoza region, close to the border with Chile. Here, where the condors fly and not a vine in sight, Bousquet discovered his dream terroir, an ideal location in which to nurture organically-grown wines. With altitudes ranging up to 5,249 feet, Gualtallary occupies the highest extremes of Mendoza’s viticultural limits. Fast-forward to the present and wine cognoscenti recognize it as the source of some of Mendoza’s finest wines. Back then, it was virgin territory: tracts of semi-desert, nothing planted, no water above ground, no electricity and a single dirt track by way of access. Locals dismissed the area as too cold for growing grapes. Bousquet, on the other hand, reckoned he’d found the perfect blend between his French homeland and the New World (sunny, with high natural acidity and a potential for relatively fruit-forward wines). Bousquet’s daughter, economist Anne Bousquet, and her husband Labid Al Ameri, a successful trader with Fidelity in Boston, found themselves increasingly drawn to the cause, including the opportunity it offered to put their shared philosophy on sustainability into effect. After a 2002 trip to Argentina, the couple began to invest in Domaine Bousquet. In 2005, Al Ameri joined his father-in-law full time, helping with the construction of the winery. Producer Information Elderton is an Australian family-owned producer based in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. It is best known for its old-vine Shiraz red wines, led by the Command cuvée. However, it first came to prominence after winning a major Australian wine award in 1993 for its Cabernet Sauvignon. The core family estate is located in Nuriootpa, and has 29 hectares (72 acres) under vine. It was purchased in 1979 in a run-down condition by the Ashmead family, who were offered the surrounding vineyards for free if they bought the homestead. The vineyards included some old plots dating back to original planting of 1894, and the Ashmeads embarked on a period of restoration. The first wines under the Elderton label were produced in 1982. The Nuriootpa vineyard is planted on alluvial silt soils over water-retaining clay, which allows irrigation to be kept to a minimum. These vineyards are very low-yielding, due in part to age, with some the Cabernet Sauvignon vines affected by Eutypa, which also creates intensely concentrated grapes. It has vineyards throughout the Mendoza region, planted primarily to Malbec, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, among others. The estate was founded by Leoncio Arizu (who had established a winery in the region in 1901) and the Bosca family at the start of the 20th Century. The winery is located in Luján de Cuyo, but there are vineyards in Maipú and the Uco Valley. All of the vineyards are at high altitude – one of Mendoza's most important features as the cooler nighttime temperatures that are characteristic of higher altitude makes viticulture possible in the otherwise sunny, arid region. It was founded in 1979, and was one of the first wineries in California to make single-vineyard Pinot Noir wines. Since the 1990s, it has perhaps been better known for its Chardonnay. Grapes were sourced from local Carneros growers until the mid-1990s, when Acacia started to acquire properties surrounding the winery. Columbia Crest is one of the largest wineries in Washington, alongside Chateau Ste. Michelle. The parent company of both, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, was sold by tobacco company Altria (Marlboro et al) in 2021 for $1.2 billion to a private equity firm. Producer Information Tenute di Nozzole is a Tuscan wine estate located in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone, north of the village of Greve. It has been owned by the Folonari family since 1971 and is known mainly for its wines from the Sangiovese grape as well as a leading Cabernet Sauvignon. The entire estate covers around 400 hectares (1000 acres), with around 90ha (225 acres) planted to vineyards. It produces a standard Chianti Classico and a Riserva that are aged in both French and Slavonian oak, plus a single-vineyard Gran Selezione wine from the La Forra parcel. This wine is only released in the very best years and spends around eight months in stainless steel, and then 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels. The main winery is based in Luján de Cuyo in Mendoza, and began operating in 2002 with a maximum capacity of 40,000 cases. Piattelli Vineyards opened a second winery in Cafayate in 2012, with a gravity-flow vinification system – one of the only ones in the country. Concrete egg wine fermenters have also been installed to optimize quality. The vineyards in Luján de Cuyo reach 3084ft (940m) above sea level and are planted with Malbec, which is used to make the Grand Reserve and Premium Reserve Malbec wines. There is also a vineyard in Tupungato in the Valle de Uco, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The area's high altitudes and low humidity conditions means that pests are not an issue, and the estate's vineyards in Mendoza are pesticide-free. Piattelli's vineyards in Cafayate are planted to Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Cabernet Franc and Torrontés. Torrontés is particularly well-suited to the area's high altitude and free-draining sandy soils. The lack of water in the soils lowers yields and concentrates the flavors in the grapes, and Piattelli's focus in Cafayate is on low-volume production.

The Viola family, founder of San Patricio del Chañar wine valley, runs the winery and, since 2019, they have another patagonic icon, Hans Vinding-Diers, as their wine consultant. The family has a 20 year history in the wine industry. It is a young one, but it is the history of viticulture in Neuquén province. Julio started planting the vines back in 1999 and in 2003 Julio jr. and Ana jumped in together with Pedro, Ana´s husband. It makes a wide range of wines though Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are to the fore. The estate sits on 200 acres (80 hectares) of land in the southeast of the valley, on the Silverado Bench at the foor of Atlas Peak. Here a cooling influence from the San Pablo Bay promotes a long growing season. The rocky benchland soils have low fertility and cause the vines to struggle and produce small yields of highly concentrated fruit. They contrast with the rich sandy loams of the valley floor. Vineyard elevations and exposures vary, and some parcels of estate vines lie in more fertile lower areas. Each block is vinified separately.
