The company's most famous wine is the single-vineyard Armagh Shiraz which regularly scores highly with critics. Cameron was working as the Director of Business Development at Winebid.com and Thomas was working as Assistant Winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars. Their mutual love of great wine led to many shared dinners and glasses of wine, where they discussed the prospect of finding a project that would allow them to work together in producing a world-class wine. The opportunity finally arose eleven years later, with the 2009 Hobel Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Hobel, our family name, is also a traditional woodworking plane that has been used for centuries by skilled craftsmen to smooth, balance and finish wood surfaces. Producer Information Chateau Montelena is one of the most prominent Napa Valley wineries. It was directly associated with bringing international recognition to the California wine industry through the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Based in Calistoga, it is famous for its varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. The history of Chateau Montelena began in 1882, when the site of the modern winery was bought by Alfred L. Tubbs. Tubbs built the eponymous chateau and created the A.L. Tubbs Winery in 1888, and by 1896 it was the seventh-largest wine producer in California. Prohibition in the 1920s saw the end of the winery, although the Tubbs family continued to grow and sell grapes. When Prohibition was repealed in 1933 winemaking resumed, A.L. Tubbs wines were unable to find their former success. Tubbs' grandson changed the name to Chateau Montelena, after the nearby Mount Saint Helena, but the winery was sold shortly afterwards. In 1972, Jim Barrett took over ownership and released the first vintage. Chateau Montelena's real success came in the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, where its 1973 Chardonnay was deemed the best of a lineup of top wines from California and France. Producer Information Betz Family Winery is a small Washington wine producer in the Columbia Valley viticultural area. It sources fruit through a number of partnerships in several of the regions sub-AVAs, dividing its catalogue between red Bordeaux-style and Rhône-style wines. The most prominent varieties are Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Petit Verdot, Merlot and Grenache. The winery was established by Bob and Cathy Betz, with the inaugural 1997 vintage a limited production of roughly 150 cases. The River Pass Vineyard (part of Passalacqua Ranch, 5th generation Sonoma farmers) is located just north of Healdsburg in Sonoma County. Nick Goldschmidt has been working this site for 15 years. The site is divided into three sections, north, middle, and south and faces southeast. It receives gentle morning sun which permits longer hang-times and greater flavor development. Nick Goldschmidt is an esteemed winemaker with over 30 years of experience.
