It had more of a combination of black and red fruit. The fruit character is ripe, slightly jammy, dried (like a fruit leather, not raisinated). The oakiness in the wine is balanced, with subtle cocoa and carob notes. Producer Information Homefire Vineyard – We wanted to show that wines are better if made from vineyards that use organic-style farming methods. We created this vineyard from the ground up. The top 12-inches of soil are loam which becomes increasingly dense with depth. Our initial collection of Zinfandel vines are a St Peter’s Church clone grafted onto 110R rootstock which is well-suited to our soil conditions. The soil is balanced with natural components including more than 12-tons of compost per acre to date. Hales Vineyard – The old vines were planted in 1952. Half the vineyard is trellised, the other half, head pruned. Wilfred Wong calls the wine produced from these vines “classic Dry Creek Zin.” Mia’s Secret – This vineyard lies on a slope 1,200 feet above the valley. You’ll cross a couple streams and a washed out road to get there. But Zinfandel grown there is unlike any we’ve tasted; rich, mountain fruit, dark berry flavors and an exotic essence unique to the site.

Drink now Producer Information St. Francis Winery is a family-owned producer located in Sonoma, California, with vineyards in Sonoma Valley and Russian River Valley. It was founded in the 1970s and today produces an array of wines, focusing mainly on Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. St. Francis produces a diverse range of wines that have been highly awarded and met with acclaim. These include top wines like the Lagomarsino Cabernet Sauvignon and the Anthem Meritage blend, as well as a range of other single-vineyard wines. The Red and White Splash wines are St Francis' entry-level range. In 1971, Joe Martin planted Merlot and Chardonnay in Sonoma Valley, in what is now known as the Behler vineyard. The quality of fruit coming from that vineyard led him to establish St. Francis Winery in 1979 with his business partner, Lloyd Canton. Over the years they acquired more land, including the Lagomarsino vineyard in Russian River Valley and the Wild Oak vineyard in Sonoma Valley. Today, St. Francis has more than 380 acres (153 hectares) of vineyards. The vineyards' location throughout Sonoma means that St. Francis has a wealth of terroir to choose from. The Behler vineyard has gravel and loam soils and a cooling breeze from the Pacific coast, and is planted to Chardonnay and Merlot, which both do very well here. The Lagomarsino vineyard is situated on a hillside, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon planted at the top where they get more sun, and Chardonnay at the bottom of the slope where it's cooler. Wild Oak vineyard is the most varietally diverse of the vineyards, with varieties like Malbec and Marsanne, as well as Cabernet and Chardonnay.

It has gained particular renown for its selection of wines from the Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel grape varieties. Dry Creek Vineyard was founded in 1972 by David Stare, with the purchase and replanting of a prune orchard opposite the Dry Creek General Store. Stare was at the forefront of the formation of the Dry Creek Valley AVA in 1983, and was the first to plant Sauvignon Blanc in Dry Creek Valley – and the first in Sonoma County to release a Fumé Blanc. There are five wines in the current portfolio made from Sauvignon Blanc, including Soleil ("sun" in French), a late-harvest, botritized dessert wine crafted in the style of a Sauternes. Dry Creek is also considered a leading specialist of Zinfandel, and there are a range of wines made from this variety, including the core Old Vines and Heritage Vines cuvées, and a range of single-vineyard wines. There is also a well-regarded, Loire-style Chenin Blanc from the Clarksburg AVA, and the DCV Estate Block 10 Chardonnay, of which around 1250 cases are made annually. Despite making a name for its Zinfandel, Dry Creek Vineyard was reportedly the first estate to use the term Meritage on the label of a 1985 vintage red wine, released in 1987. The current group of Bordeaux-style reds is headed by The Mariner, a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot along with Petit Verdot,...

Producer Information Big Smooth wines are sourced from premier vineyards in Lodi, California, nestled between the Sierra Foothills and the San Francisco Bay area, where rich, bold wines are known to thrive. Our approach to winemaking is to make a big, fruit-forward wine that finishes smooth and satisfying. Crafting Big Smooth wines involves walking a tightrope between developing a full-bodied wine with a satin finish. We allow our grapes to achieve high sugar levels so the tannins in the skin soften. We age our wines in a combination of American, French, and Hungarian oak that adds complexity and lends seductive vanilla and coconut notes. This fine balance between fruit and aging is how we truly achieve wines worthy of bottling for Big Smooth.

Producer Information Ironstone Vineyards is a sizeable, family-owned wine producer situated in the Sierra Foothills region of central, inland California. It has more than 2000 hectares (5000 acres) of vineyards in both the Sierra Foothills and Lodi AVAs, which are planted to an array of classic Californian grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Viognier, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir. In 1948, founder John Kautz acquired five hectares (12 acres) of land that he planted to vineyard. Today, Ironstone Vineyards is still managed by the Kautz family, who named the estate after the limestone and schist rock slopes from which they carved out their wine cellars – known as the "wine caverns" – and laid the foundations for their winery. The miners who carried out the project said it was like "blasting through iron". The wine caverns have the capacity to hold up to 1500 French and American oak barrels. These provide the ideal temperature and humidity conditions for the storage of wine, remaining at a constant 60? (16?) and 70 percent humidity throughout the year. Ironstone Vineyards makes a wide portfolio of wines and is one of the USA's largest wine companies. The Classic, Reserve and Obsession ranges come under the Ironstone brand name, but the company also produces a number of stand-alone brands including Christine Andrew and Leaping Horse Vineyards.

Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast. Making delicious wines of high personality is directly related to the difficult locations of the Hartford family's vineyard sources, the limited production of their bottlings and the varietals they use. "Character through adversity" is an expression that the Hartford family believes to apply to both people and grapevines, and they feel that surviving adversity builds character, and personality, in both. The Hartford Family makes wines under two marks, one of which is Hartford Court. Hartford Court bottlings are small lots of high-personality single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that express the distinctive qualities inherent in each vineyard's terroir - the interplay of soil, slope, exposure and climate. The fruit is sourced from the Russian River Valley, Green Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations.

Producer: Turley Wine Cellars Vintage: 2021 Size: 750ml ABV: 15.5% Varietal: Zinfandel Country/Region: United States, Paso Robles The darker, more hedonistic cousin to the Pesenti Zinfandel, with plenty of fruits that run the full gamut from berry to stone and everything in-between. Supple, juicy and mouthwatering on the palate with a mineral zip. Producer Information Turley Wine Cellars was established in the Napa Valley in 1993 by Larry Turley. Turley, a founder of Frog's Leap Winery in Rutherford, wanted a smaller, more intimate production size, and wanted to work with old vines. Turley sold his shares in Frog's Leap to begin his own winery with the help of his sister Helen Turley, a notable Californian wine consultant and winemaker. Helen acted as winemaker until 1995 when she went back to consulting and Ehren Jordan assumed the winemaking role. Jordan left Turley in 2013 when the position was taken by his protégé, Tegan Passalacqua. The estate makes around 30 wines from 35 different vineyards, split roughly in half between estate-owned land and long-term leases. The focus has been on reviving old vines. Some of the vineyards are more than 100 years old, including the Hayne and Ueberroth vineyards, planted in 1902 and 1885 respectively. The predominant grape here is Zinfandel, but Petite Sirah features heavily as well. Turley's style embraces the full-bodied, robust, and fruit-dominant potential of Zinfandel when grown in Californian heat. The approach has been to bring the fruit to full physiological ripeness which can lead to high alcohol levels – in hot years some of Turley's wines have been as high as 18 percent alcohol. Turley now has two wineries – one in Templeton in Paso Robles, and the other in St Helena in Napa. A cult following and moderate production volumes – around 16,000 cases a year – means that the majority of the wines are sold through mailing list with a two-year wait list. The company also has two cellar doors – one in Paso Robles, south of San Francisco, and one in Amador County, east of the city.

All were hard working Italians who worked hard for every dollar earned. Decades later, my wife Tiana and I began our own venture into the world of wine, buying beautiful land in Lodi, and moving our family of five to the California Central Valley. Today, in addition to wine production of Hook Or Crook Cellars, Thomas Allen Wine Estates produces more than a million cases annually for other well-known, national brands. Pretty sure, we’re making all the grandparents proud. And that’s a humbling feeling.

Producer Information Rodney Strong Vineyards is a Sonoma County winery deeply rooted in the rise of the Sonoma and greater California wine industries. Founder Rodney Strong is often regarded as a pioneer of Sonoma wine with several significant regional firsts associated with him and the winery. The winery is now one of the largest operations in the region and boasts a number of brands and collections at a range of price points and styles. These mostly cover common California varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Strong, a former professional dancer, founded the winery in 1959, initially buying bulk wine to be bottled and sold under the label Tiburon Vintners. In 1962, Strong bought a winery and vines and formed Windsor Vineyards, eventually changing its name to Rodney Strong Vineyards. It was the first winery to produce single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon out of Alexander Valley and a Chalk Hill-designated Chardonnay. It was also one of the earliest cultivators of Pinot Noir in Sonoma. In 1989, the Klein family, fourth-generation winemakers, bought Rodney Strong Vineyards (after a succession of corporate owners and name changes since the company was first sold in 1974). Klein kept Strong on as a consultant until the latter's retirement in 1995. The winery now has 14 estate vineyards and has a commitment to environmentally friendly practices. While its catalog of wines is large, its successes have been from the Burgundy and Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and these remain the backbone of its production. The company also boasts a portfolio of brands including Knotty Vines, Davis Bynum, Upshot Wines and Rowen Wine Company. In 2013, Rodney Strong Vineyards was named winery of the year by Wine...
