Producer: Marqués de Murrieta Ratings: WA 100 JS 100 Vintage: 1986 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Rioja White Blend Country/Region: Spain, Rioja Intense, pungent nose of wax, herbs and lemon. Lots of sweet vanilla and ripe white fruits. The palate is quite fresh, with firm acidity, but a great buttery density of fruit. There's a keen citrus edge against all that waxy lime-leaf, orange and butter. Long, pure finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: It has 13.5% alcohol, an extremely low pH of 2.98 and 6.75 grams of acidity (tartaric). It has a very subtle nose and it's a bit shy, a little closed at first. It was only bottled one and a half years ago, and it's not crazy to say that the wine is showing extremely young. The wine shows more open the day after, when it has developed some nuances of mushrooms and verbena tea. This is mostly Viura with perhaps a pinch of Malvasía Riojana (aka Alarije). The palate is both powerful and elegant, with superb acidity and great length, with volume and sharpness, with a mineral, umami-driven finish. James Suckling: This is a triumph. An amazing white showing roasted pineapple, dried apple, flowers and hints of lemon curd on the nose. Hints of almonds, too. Full-body, closed and tight with amazing depth and beauty. Waxy, salty, and creamy. Goes on for minutes. 21 years in wood, seven in concrete and then about three years in bottle. First year since 1978. Viura with a hint of malvasia. I have the same mind-tingling sensation tasting this as tasting the 1963 Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Blanco. Another perfect wine. Producer: Marqués de Murrieta Ratings: WA 96 JS 97 Vintage: 2005 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Rioja Red Blend Country/Region: Spain, Rioja Bold and rich, this red fills the palate with blackberry, plum sauce, soy, chocolate and spice flavors. Broad and deep, in a modern style, with plenty of oak and enough backbone to stay focused. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The wine matures for a further two years in bottle before being released. It’s extremely backward and tight, showing very young, with a balanced nose between spice, tertiary and cherry fruit aromas. It’s a powerful, still young vintage, with plenty of glycerin, body, round tannins. An austere wine (is it the Mazuelo?), it is complex and ever-changing in the palate. It has a sense of harmony that only the best wines have. Very long and elegant. I loved its serious and austere overall feeling. 100,000 bottles produced. This is a true vin de garde which develops complex notes of violet and meat with time in the glass. This is a Gran Reserva greatly marked by the Mazuelo, which should give it great ability to age. At this quality level it represents very good value. James Suckling: You just want to smell this, with a polish and clarity that changes all the time. Aromas of walnuts, dark fruits, ginger, roasted seaweed, soya, iron, rosemary, and lavender. Full-bodied, yet polished and firm. Such tension and form. The length is phenomenal. As always, this is a selection of the best of the best. Producer Information Marqués de Murrieta is one of the most famous estates in the Rioja region of Spain. It is one of the more traditional houses in Rioja, and is best known for its Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, a Tempranillo-dominant wine with a small amount of Mazuelo. On top of this, Marqués de Murrieta makes a range of other wines in the region, including a varietal Mazuelo and a premium white Rioja. The company was founded in 1852 by Luciano de Murrieta, and has been owned by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family since 1983. The winery is located to the east of Logroño, which at the time of construction was within the Rioja Oriental (Rioja Baja) area. However, it was felt that Murrieta could not be allowed to belong in what was considered an inferior subregion, so the boundary was moved. Today, the estate is located in its own enclave of La Rioja Alta. Marqués de Murrieta's wines are made from estate-grown...

Balance defines this wine vintage after vintage; lively on the palate as well as enveloping and harmonious. With silky tannins and a long, elegant finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2011 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial was produced with a blend of 84% Tempranillo and 16% Mazuelo (Cariñena) from a plot called La Plana that was planted in 1950 at 485 meters in altitude, the highest in the Ygay property. The grapes were picked between September 17 and 22, and the Mazuelo was later, on September 28. The bunches were destemmed and lightly crushed and put to ferment in stainless steel for 11 days with constant pump-overs and punch-downs. The Tempranillo matured for 28 months in American oak barrels and the Mazuelo for 28 months in French barriques. It's 14% alcohol and has a pH of 3.65 with 5.6 grams of acidity (measured in tartaric acid per liter). It's very tough to follow a vintage like 2010, and 2011 was not an easy year; the wine is possibly more powerful and concentrated but keeping the freshness, with a longer élevage but very young and lively, with an elegant texture and mouthfeel, great balance and elegance. The wine feels lively, and it seems impossible that it has been in bottle for over six years. It has the classical profile with the effect of the American oak barrels, cigar box, cedar wood, sweet spices—aromatic, intoxicating, complex. This should age very slowly and for a very long time. James Suckling: Extremely well-mannered, traditional character to this, showing layer upon layer of savory complexity on the nose, with iron, dried meat, tobacco, balsamic fruit, dried red berries, orange peel, leather and dried mushrooms. A medium-to full-bodied, linear and zesty Rioja that’s full of nuanced flavors that linger through the very long, savory finish. Floral, too. Yet, it remains bright and precise. Producer: Cavaliere d'Oro Ratings: VN 90 JS 93 Vintage: 2016 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Sangiovese Country/Region: Italy, Chianti Classico Created from the estate oldest vineyards, this Riserva Chianti Classico keeps the most typical organoleptic characteristics of this old tradition wine emphasized by a balanced ageing in wood. Reviews: Vinous: The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is laced with dark cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and mint. A dollop of Merlot adds mid-palate juiciness and pliancy, along with soft contours that make the wine a real pleasure to taste and drink, even in the early going. This forward, succulent Riserva certainly has plenty to offer. James Suckling: Beautiful depth to this Chianti Classico with cherry, wet earth and mushroom aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, tight and lightly chewy with firmness and focus. Producer Information Cavaliere d'Oro (also known as Castello di Gabbiano) is a historic wine producer of Tuscany, dating back to the 10th Century. It produces a range of classic wines under the Chianti and Chianti Classico DOCGs, and its vineyards are focused largely on Sangiovese. The cellars first began construction in 1124, and were owned by one of the leading banking families in the province, the Bardi. In the 15th Century, the castle passed into the possession of the important and politically influential Soderini family. After being labelled rebels by the ruling Medici family in the 16th Century, the Soderini fled and left the castle abandoned until the 17th Century. Today, the estate encompasses approximately 150 hectares (371 acres) of vineyard land. The majority is dedicated to the growth of Sangiovese, although a range of other grape varieties are grown, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Colorino and Malvasia. Sangiovese forms the basis of Gabbiano's DOCG wines, which includes a Chianti Classico Riserva wine, as well as the standard forms. Gabbiano also makes a sweet Vin Santo, and a range of Toscana IGT wines. As of 2018, Castello di Gabbiano and the Cavaliere d Oro brand is within the Treasury Wine Estate portfolio.
