Founded in 1817, the Highland single malt whisky producer today has an annual capacity of 10.2 million litres and distills for brands including Haig Dimple, VAT 69 and Johnnie Walker. Despite its size and stature (it’s Diageo’s third-largest whisky distillery, covering more than 20 acres), there’s not much out there about Teaninich as a whisky in its own right – which is rather a shame as the liquid exudes as much character and body as its two illustrious near-neighbours: Dalmore and Glenmorangie. It was Captain Hugh Munro, head of the local clan, who set up Teaninich more than 200 years ago. Fun fact: in 1887 it became the first distillery north of Inverness to have electricity and a telephone. Teaninich remained in Munro family hands up until 1904, when Robert Innes Cameron, formerly a major shareholder, became the sole owner. After his death in 1932, the site was acquired by Distillery Company Limited the following year. Teaninich was passed from pillar to post through various mergers and acquisitions during the latter part of the 20th century, and today the distillery is of course owned by Diageo. If Teaninich is well-known for anything it is surely its unique blend of historic whisky distilling and cutting-edge technology – for example, it is one of just two Scotch distilleries to up its efficiency through using a mash filter instead of a mash tun or lauter tun. This focus on modernity has only accelerated in recent years: in 2013 Diageo invested £26 million in the site, essentially constructing a brand new, six-still-strong stillhouse and more than doubling capacity. In total, the site boasts 20 washbacks, six wash stills and six spirit stills, and 90% of its incoming barley is grown in Scotland. Teaninich is one of those rare whiskies where official bottlings are outranked by third-party products – and there aren’t even that many of those....

Distilled in 2016, the whisky spent nine years maturing, finishing up with a stay in a marsala wine cask for a profile laden with spiced plums, boiled sweeties, and poached fruit. Distillery Information In 1892, John Morrison purchased the Knock Estate and farm. Shortly after, he uncovered a spring on Knock Hill’s southern slopes. He found the water to have a superb flavour and sent it to a Distiller’s Company Limited-owned Laboratory in Edinburgh for evaluation. They confirmed the water was indeed of outstanding quality and put up an offer for the site. Morrison gladly accepted. The Knockdhu distillery was built in May of 1893 and designed by the Elgin-based architects Gordon and Macbey. The distillery was the first to be built by Distillers Company Ltd. The water is piped from Knock Hill to the distillery and also to those living in the local village, though today five other water sources are used in supplement as well as that from the Ternemney Brook, which proffers the distillery’s cooling water. The capacity is small; the distillery’s pair of stills produce around 900,000 litres yearly. Today, none of the whisky is bottled as Knockdhu single malt. Rather as anCnoc. The name anCnoc was chosen as the current owners, Inver House, deemed Knockdhu too similar to Knockando and relabelled it to avoid confusion. Despite being small, the Knockdhu whisky distillery boasts large onsite storage facilities; its five warehouses have space for 7,600 casks.

Distillery Information The picturesque Pitlochry-based distillery lies close to Edradour and is unconnected with the simarly spelt town, Blair Atholl. The water tumbles down the 841m peak, Ben Vrackie and into the 2.5million litres the distillery produces annually. The distillery was founded under the name Aldour in 1778, by Robert Robertson. In 1825, he expanded and renamed the facilities Blair Athol. The distillery has had a long association with Bell’s Blended Scotch - their roots were entwined as far back as the mid nineteenth century. Blair Athol changed hands several times during the 1800s and eventually closed in 1932. A year later the distillery was acquired by Arthur Bell and Sons and today as much as 95% of the outturn is bourbon-matured and used in Bell’s blended products. The whisky boasts a swift maturation and the remaining five or so percent of spirit is aged in sherry casks and sold as single malt, mostly by independent bottlers.

The Speysider has overcome a chequered history that began with opening just a year before The Pattison crash of 1899 followed by years of dormancy or changing of hands. Following monetary difficulties the distillery was sold to the Longmorn Distilleries Company, who closed it at the turn of the twentieth century. Benriach, named for the Gaelic for ‘speckled mountain’, saw an upturn in fortunes in the 1960s, however, and from 1965 onwards was run by new owners The Glenlivet Distillers. Seagrams purchased the distillery in 1978, then in 1985 two extra stills were added bringing the total to four. When Pernod Ricard took over Seagram’s whisky division in 2001 Benriach was mothballed, but in April of 2004, Benriach was sold, along with several thousand casks, for £5.4million to the South African company, Infra Trading, combining their efforts with Burn Stewart director Billy Walker. They reopened the distillery the following year and soon established the Benriach Distilling Co. In 2008, the Benriach Distilling Co acquired a second distillery from Chivas Brothers in the shape of GlenDronach, before adding Glenglassaugh Distillery to its portfolio in 2013. Brown-Forman, the Louisville, Kentucky-based producer of Jack Daniel's, in-turn bought the Benriach Distilling Co in 2016 for £281 million.

Distillery Information Caol Ila was founded to the North of Islay in 1846 by the pleasingly-named Hector Henderson. It is located near Port Askaig and sits in lush, floral surroundings, overlooking the cove and the Paps of southern Jura. The distillery draws its water from Loch Nam Ban, whose waters travel through limestone and peat before reaching their beneficiary, Caol Ila. The whisky distillery was sold to Norman Buchanan in 1852 and then, following monetary hardship, to the Glasgow-based blenders Bulloch, Lade and Co who renovated the buildings in 1879. Following liquidation, Distillers Company Ltd acquired Caol Ila and the distillery was subsequently transferred to Scottish Malt Distillers. The capacity is moderate at 3.65 million litres annually, the majority of which is used in Johnnie Walker blends. Just 5% is kept for maturation as single malt. From 1999, unpeated single malts have been experimented with and in 2006 the first unpeated bottling was released in the form of an eight year-old. Caol Ila, whose name derives from the Gaelic for ‘Sound of Islay’, has been included in the Diageo Classic Malts range, exhibiting twelve and eighteen year-old expressions as well as a Moscatel-finished Distillers Edition. Distillery Information In 1825, George Cooper founded the Glencadam whisky distillery. The distillery changed hands several times during the 19th century, but only twice in the 20th century. In July of 1954, Andrew Stevenson and Harry Southwell sold Glencadam to Hiram Walker for the sum of £83,400. Five years later Hiram Walker renovated the buildings and in 1987 Allied Lyons, who later became Allied Domecq, purchased the distillery from them, who by then had also changed to Hiram Walker Gooderham & Worts. Allied mothballed the Glencadam distillery at the turn of the millennium and then sold it in 2003 to Angus Dundee. Despite being closed for three years, the distillery had been left in such superb condition by Allied, Angus Dundee were able to reopen it just two months after the acquisition. Glencadam was the second distillery Angus Dundee had purchased, Tomintoul being the first.
