Hombo Shuzo stayed in the southernmost whisky distillery in Japan until 1984, when it moved its whisky-making operation to Shinshu Distillery*, situated gloriously between Japan’s soaring Southern Alps and the towering Central Alps in Miyata city in the Nagano prefecture. Complete with a stunning view of the imperious Mt. Komagatake at just over 2,600 feet (798 meters) above sea level, not only is Shinshu Distillery one of the highest altitude whisky distilleries currently in production globally, but it's also the absolute highest in Japan. This location wasn’t chosen for its picturesque views however, but because Hombo Shuzo wanted its whisky to be affected by the more moderate levels of humidity, which would prolong maturation, and the high-quality water source. While sluggish demand for whisky in this era led to a temporary halting of production in 1992, normal service was resumed in 2012, and since then Mars whisky has done very well for itself. The most notable product to come out of this distillery is Komagatake, a single malt whisky named after the most imposing of the many nearby mountains; and Mars Maltage Cosmo, which was introduced to the market in July 2015 as a homage to the distillery’s location, referring to the sky that can be seen at night when looking out from the aforementioned Mt. Distillery Information The Glen Garioch distillery may well be Scotland's first licensed distillery. Varying dates are given as to the founding of the distillery, but all are predated by an article in the Aberdeen Journal on the 1st December 1785, which announced the first distillation of spirit at the site. Glen Garioch (pronounced ‘Glen Geery’) lies at the village of Old Meldrum in Aberdeenshire. The distillery buildings sit huddled on a little outcrop flecked with heather gorse and grasses and surrounded by barley pastures - it is said that some of the best barley in Scotland is to be found there. Having changed hands many times over the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Glen Garioch distillery was shut down in 1968. Stanley P Morrison acquired the distillery two years later. In 1973, following extensive renovations, production resumed. The whisky produced was much more reminiscent of traditional Highland single malts, this was due in part to the floor maltings at the distillery and the malt maker’s schooling on Islay, where he learnt the joys of peated whiskies. At a time when the Islay malt whiskies were very fashionable, Glen Garioch’s new, robust character did much for the fortunes of the distillery. The floor maltings were decommissioned in 1979, though recently there has been much talk of using them once more. Today, the distillery is under the Japanese Suntory ownership, after they acquired Morrison Bowmore in 1994. Glen Garioch currently runs at three quarters of capacity, producing around 700,000 litres per annum and selling roughly one third of this yearly, much being exported for the Asian market. Likewise, running the stills hotter or faster would speed up the cycle time and produce more output, but that spirit would be “harsher”, which they don’t feel is an acceptable compromise. Given the small scale—of both the distillery and the team—and traditional production methods of Oban, it’s almost tempting to label them a craft distiller. The Oban distillery sits at sea level on the north-western coast of the Scottish mainland at the northern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula (making Oban a Highland Whisky) in its namesake town of Oban. Distillery Information The buildings of the Glen Elgin distillery are rather modest, this being due to a lack of funding when it was first built in 1898. The whisky distillery was designed by the renowned Charles Doig, who heralded from the namesake town, Elgin. Despite the size and the decidedly low annual production capacity of 1.83 million litres, the Glen Elgin distillery enjoys world wide popularity, selling nearly nine million bottles a year. The building was financed by the North of Scotland banker James Carle and William Simpson of Glenfarclas fame. Having begun distillation at the turn of the 20th century, Glen Elgin closed down just months later. In 1901, the distillery was acquired at auction by the Glen Elgin-Glenlivet Distillery Company for £4,000. Production began once more, though it only lasted from 1904 to 1905. It was not until Scottish Malt Distillers acquired Glen Elgin in 1930 that its fate improved. To this day, the bulk of whisky production is used for blending, particularly in the White Horse blends; Scottish Malt Distillers having licensed the distillery to White Horse shortly after purchase. In 1964, a further four stills were installed, bringing the total to six. Substantial renovations were carried out on the site and today the 1960s aesthetics remain.

Thanks to Diageo there have been, of late, several single malt whiskies released from Linkwood. In 2008, three twenty-six year-olds were launched, notable for their 50cl bottles and having spent the last fourteen years of their maturation in either rum, red wine or port casks. There have been quite a number of independent bottlings in recent times, joining a few special editions and the Flora and Fauna twelve year-old. The Linkwood distillery was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown and rebuilt fifty-one years later following William Brown’s inheritance of the distillery in 1868. Linkwood is currently under Diageo ownership following Scottish Malt Distillers takeover in 1933 and their subsequent amalgamation to form the drinks giant.
