Included is an ALS Autograph Letter SIGNED by John Le Carre who also signed it with his real non pen name, David Cornwell; the letter on his personal stationery, dated 10 May 83, has his hand written return address of 9 Gainsborough Gdns, London NW3 beside his embossed name; the letter is in response to an inquiry from a Canadian lawyer and admirer of LeCarre's writings and particular of this book; the subject of the inquiry is whether the phrase in the book ""the truth shall make you free"" attributed by Le Carre to Karl Marx was in error and should have been attributed to the Gospel of St. John in the New Testament; LeCarre acknowledges the inquiry with thanks and that "" of course it was St. John! Helga got it wrong, not me _ hence Charlie's sour reminder that it was Noel Coward!""; a carbon copy of the lawyer's typed letter to Le Carre dated April 28th, 1983 is also included and both letters go on to discuss the then current situation in Palestine; also included is the book that the admirer ( now deceased) owned with his signature on the front free end paper; it is not a first edition and not itself of collectible value but is included for completeness of this small archive. Le Carre's letter is one page 8 by 10 inches (25 cm by 20.5 cm) with three mild folds.
