It owns pockets of vineyards close to Saint-Émilion town, with a large core parcel right on the very edge. This is regularly used in the Château Canon grand vin, along with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc from the estate's various other vineyards. More than 60 percent of Canon's vineyards are planted to Merlot. The remaining is planted to Cabernet Franc. Features plenty of pumping bass, but if you pay attention, there's a laser of chalky minerality driving the finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2015 Canon was a benchmark wine that seemed to revitalize this historic estate. I was crossing my fingers that it would not disappoint in bottle and I am glad to say that it delivers the goods. It has a very intense bouquet (just as it showed out of barrel) with laser-like precision offering wild strawberry, raspberry preserve, wet limestone and hints of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, clean and fresh with pure black and red fruit whose every atom appears infused with minerals. The mouth is tingling long after the wine has exited and your brain is thinking … when is the next sip coming? It is frankly heads and shoulders above almost every Saint Émilion this vintage, to reaffirm, a benchmark for this historic estate that will give pleasure to many over the coming years. Astonishing. James Suckling: Seductive. The nose draws you in deep: It’s like staring into a well of pristine dark cherries, dark plums, blackberries and mulberries. All the oak is perfectly subsumed. The palate’s flawless with immense depth and power and it’s so balanced as to appear to float. Immaculate fresh dark-berry and plum flavors. Silky and deep, ribbon-like finish. Perfect. Producer: Domaine de la Borde Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Savagnin Country/Region: France, Jura Domaine De La Borde Foudre à Canon Naturé 2019 is a profiled white. The nose is intense and fruity with citrus and herbaceous aromas. The palate is fresh, vibrant and dynamic, with a deep flavour. Producer Information Julien is one of those who think that wine is made primarily in the vineyard … The estate is made up of 5ha of vines aged from 7 to 77 years old on the marly valleys of Pupillin. The Ploussard, Trousseau, Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Savagnin grape varieties are expressed through different plots whose soils and exposure make them typical, thus producing local wines on a family scale. The harvest is manual in order to start vinification from quality sorted grapes. Respect for the terroir is reflected in essential principles such as contact treatments, without synthetic molecules (& biodynamic preparations), natural grassing and soil work (labors, ridging, scratching …) and no weeding chemical, in order to preserve steeply sloping terroirs, control of doses of So2 to applied to all the vines.

Producer: Domaine de la Borde Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Savagnin Country/Region: France, Jura Producer Information Domaine de la Borde is a tiny Jura estate in the appellation of Arbois-Pupillin that makes excellent, high-character wines. Winemaker Julien Mareschel might not have much space to work with, but he certainly makes the most of it. Three and a half of the domaine's five hectares are dedicated to growing white varieties (Chardonnay and Savagnin), with the remaining hectare and a half going to red (Trousseau, Pinot Noir and Ploussard). Half of the vines are more than 30 years old, and the other half were planted between 1985 and 1990, and the estate is entirely organic/biodynamic. A unique terroir, strict hand-harvesting of the grapes, and a meticulous vinification process ensure the wines have a distinct sense of place, not to mention the kind of nuance and head-turning character that adventurous palates are always searching for.

Reviews: Wine Advocate: The brilliant 2020 Canon looks set to surpass both the 2019 and 2016 as this estate's finest wine since the post-war period, though like many of the best 2020s, it will require more patience than its 2019 counterpart. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with notions of exotic spices and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with vibrant acids and beautifully polished, chalky tannins. Pure and precise, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish. This beautifully constructed wine communicates the essence of this superb limestone terroir, and it will be worth a special effort to track down and cellar. Full-bodied and packed with ripe, rich dried berries and exotic spice layers, it has a firm, slightly chewy structure and just enough freshness (the pH is 3.78), finishing long and savory. Give it another 2-3 years of cellaring to soften its edges and allow its flavor spectrum to fully emerge, and drink it over the next 20 to 25+ years. Perfect. Best from 2022. Producer Information The different plots of vines total 54 acres of very uniform soil types, which is the first hint that Chateau Caonon is unusual with respect to the rest of the Saint Emilion area. The Subltle combination of limestone containing fossilized starfish covered by a thin layer of clay left behind by a prehistoric lake, constitute an ideal environment for the grape varieties, highlighting the expression of their characteristics. Fresh, yet not very rich, this type of soil is a perfectly balanced medium for the vines that keeps yields down while enhancing quality. The different steps in the vineyard...

It will develop into a rich, balanced and dense wine. Vinous: The 2020 Canon is a wine of mind-blowing purity and nuance. It has been nothing less than thrilling on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. Intensely saline and chalky, the 2020 possesses spellbinding finesse and nuance. It's super serious and balanced, mineral and flinty but very clean, without any reduction and with a fine thread in the palate. It's elegant and with fine tannins, really fine-boned. Producer Information Comando G is a Spanish wine producer in the Sierra de Gredos region of Castilla y Leon, around 100 kilometers (60 miles) to the west of Madrid. Its name alludes to the specialism in wines from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape variety from Gredos. More directly it references the Spanish-language version of a cartoon series from the 1980s, known as Battle of the Planets in English (which featured a team of heroes called G-Force). Around 10 hectares (25 acres) of vines are farmed between 900 and 1200 meters of altitude (2950 to 3940ft). The average age ranges between 50 and 80 years. Organic and biodynamic practices are used. In the cellar, whole cluster fermentations are used for red wines, with gentle pressing for whites. Fermentations with natural ambient yeasts take place in open oak vats or French oak barrels. Wines are matured in oak vats, French oak barrels or concrete tanks. Comando G founders Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia met while studying oenology in Madrid. Before joining forces both were already working in the Sierra de Gredos; Daniel at his family estate Bodegas Jimenez-Landi.

Producer Information Château Mazeris is located in Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac in the Fronsadais on the right bank of the Bordeaux region. Red wines are made under the Canon-Fronsac AOC. Château Mazeris was built in 1769. The estate was bequeathed as part of the dowry of Jeanne-Modeste Couvrat to Jean-Baptiste de Cournuaud upon their marriage in 1805. Since then, Château Mazeris has produced wine in the hands of 9 successive generations of de Cournuauds. Owners: Patrick de Cournuaud (son of Christian de Cournuaud) and his sons, Jean and Matthieu. Vineyards: 19 hectares. A very fine site on the limestone plateau and côte in Saint Michel de Fronsac,’ (David Peppercorn MW (1991, p.560), in the heart of the Canon-Fronsac AOC. Its proximity to the confluent waters of both the Dordogne and the Isle Rivers add temperature moderation (cool/cold nights throughout the year). Soil structures are well suited to Merlot of which 12 hectares are planted on a south-facing chalk plateau above the Dordogne River. There are also 7ha on calcareous clay soils, one 3.5 ha slope facing east and one facing west. A small portion of the eastern slope is planted to Cabernet Franc, which accounts for a small percentage of the blend of each of the three labels (80% of Mazeris’ total production is Merlot.) Historically there was a high (25%) percentage of Malbec.

Touches of coffee have come through with the wood aging. Bright acidity gives a touch of freshness to the firm tannins at the end. Blend 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc & 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Reviews: Vinous: The 2013 Canon La Gaffelière shows lovely energy and length, although it could use a bit more mid-palate. Sweet spices, plums, graphite and smoke emerge, but only with great reluctance. Today it is the wine's length that impresses most, but time will tell if all the elements fully come together. The 2013 is a model of precision and class. The blend is 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is to say a little less Franc than is typical. Yields are just 10 hectoliters per hectare. James Suckling: A soft and silky Canon la Gaffeliere with chocolate, berry, and light mineral undertones. Medium body, juicy finish. Drink or hold. Producer Information Located on the famous slope (and the foot of the slope) south of the medieval village of Saint-Emilion, Chateau Canon La Gaffelière has belonged to the Counts von Neipperg since 1971. Representing some eight centuries of family winegrowing tradition, Count Stephan von Neipperg has succeeded in placing Chateau Canon La Gaffelière among the top Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Emilion thanks to a winegrowing philosophy that gives priority not only to quality, but also respect for the environment. Chateau Canon La Gaffelière is located on the outskirts of the medieval town of Saint-Emilion, at the southern foot of the slope. The 19.5 hectare (48 acres) vineyard has a complex, outstanding terroir of clay-limestone and clay-sand soil. The topsoil is primarily sandy, increasingly so as one moves away from the slope. The unusual proportion of grape varieties (55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) at Canon-La-Gaffelière is perfectly suited to the soil.

The medium to full-bodied palate is filled with juicy black fruits, supported by plush tannins and well-set freshness, finishing on a long and fragrant note. Reviews: Wine Advocate: A blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Canon has a pH of 3.69 and 14% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple in color, it tumbles effortlessly out of the glass with a gorgeous perfume of candied violets, preserved plums, black cherry compote and Ceylon tea with hints of kirsch, powdered cinnamon, chocolate box and fertile loam. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with juicy black fruit layers, supported by plush, oh-so-soft tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing long and fragrant. James Suckling: Blackberries and tar with wet-earth and dark-bark aromas. Dark-chocolate and brownie notes, too. It’s full-bodied with creamy tannins and a round, caressing finish. Lovely focus and intensity, though dense and layered. Extremely creamy and polished. Really precise and bespoke. It already opens beautifully on the palate. Producer Information Château Canon is a Premier Grand Cru Classé château in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux. It owns pockets of vineyards close to Saint-Émilion town, with a large core parcel right on the very edge. This parcel is almost completely walled in and is traditionally hand-harvested and ploughed by horses. It is planted entirely with Merlot. This is regularly used in the Château Canon grand vin, along with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc from the estate's various other vineyards. More than 60 percent of Canon's vineyards are planted to Merlot. The remaining is planted to Cabernet Franc. The grapes are blended carefully to get the most from each: Merlot brings smoothness, finesse and intense fruit aromas; while Cabernet Franc brings structure and extra ability to age. The Château also makes the Croix Canon wine from an 11-hectare (27-acre) vineyard that borders the Canon estate. Buyers should be aware of the high number of wines from the Right Bank whose names include the word "Canon". This includes two distinct wines named Château Canon from...

Producer: Château Canon La Gaffelière Vintage: 1994 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red Country/Region: France, Bordeaux A dense purple color is accompanied by strikingly pure aromas of Provencal olives, jammy cassis, and smoky pain grillee notes. Ripe and fat, this medium to full-bodied, moderately tannic, muscular yet elegant wine needs another 2-4 years of cellaring. Producer Information Château Canon La Gaffelière is a well-regarded Premier Grand Cru Classé wine estate in the Saint-Émilion region of northeastern Bordeaux. The château is known for the elegance and finesse of its wines as much as it is for its owner: Count Stephan von Neipperg. The estate and château lies just south of Saint-Émilion town and was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé 2012. Canon La Gaffelière's 19.5-hectare (48-acre) vineyard is a mix of clay-limestone and clay-sand soils, with predominantly sandy topsoils. These characteristics are well-suited to the grape varieties planted here with the vineyards composed of 50 percent Merlot, 40 percent Cabernet Franc and 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. At harvest, the grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed without crushing, then fermented in temperature-controlled wooden vats. They are then aged in mostly new oak barrels for up to 18 months. The Canon La Gaffelière estate began as two separate holdings in the 19th Century: Canon Boitard and La Gaffelière Boitard. They were eventually combined, and then acquired by the Von Neipperg family in 1971. Current proprietor Count Stephan von Neipperg also owns La Mondotte, Clos de L'Oratoire and Château Peyreau in Saint-Émilion, plus a handful of other estates around Bordeaux.
