ABOUT THE AUTHOR Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1343 - October 1400) was an English poet, writer and civil servant best known for The Canterbury Tales. He has been called the 'father of English literature', or alternatively, the 'father of English poetry'. He was the first writer to be buried in what has since become Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. A prolific writer, Chaucer has been seen as crucial in legitimizing the literary use of Middle English at a time when the dominant literary languages in England were still Anglo-Norman French and Latin. The Canterbury Tales are an anthology of twenty-four short stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer between 1387 and 1400. The Canterbury Tales are widely regarded as Chaucer's magnum opus, and they are revered as one of the paramount works of English literature. [Signed] [First Edition] The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis - NOBEL PRIZE Jose Saramago [Used - Very good] [Hardcover] [Signed] [First Edition] The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis - NOBEL PRIZE Jose Saramago [Used - Very good] [Hardcover] 915.18 CAD IMPORTANCE Recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. The greatest of the acclaimed Portuguese writer's novels. The renowned and highly influential literary critic Harold Bloom described Saramago in 2002 as "the greatest living novelist" and a "permanent part of the Western canon." Characteristic of Reis's work, the work blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality while rejecting the limitations of traditional narrative practices and punctuation. The novel is filled with plot digressions and the prose overflows with lyrical intensity in the form of paragraphs often filling several pages. Ultimately, the novel is a story of one man's attempt to resist any sort of cultural contextualization and to reject any place in society whatsoever.
