[First Edition] A Christmas Carol In Prose Being A Ghost Story of Christmas. DICKENS, Charles [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
9785.18 CAD
FIRST EDITION SECOND ISSUE. 1 vol., 6-5/8" x 4-7/16", chapter heading reading "Stave One", illustrated with 4 hand colored engraved plates by John Leech and 4 black and white illustrations by W.J. Linton, internally clean and bright, mild offsetting to color plates. Bound in the original straight grained rose colored cloth, gilt tile and wreath to spine and front cover, front cover has a perfect 'D' in 'Dickens', yellow pastedowns and endpapers, all edges gilt, front hinge expertly repaired, head of spine renewed, general handling, uneven stain to rear cover, overall still a GOOD+ copy. Regarded as Dicken's most widely read novel and considered to be "the greatest Christmas book ever written in any language" (Eckel p. 116) selling more than 6000 copies in the few days leading up to Christmas. The work was extravagantly costly as Dickens for the first time (and incidentally his last) used color in the title-page and etchings as he wanted to make the book a beautiful gift and to be a celebration of the Christmas spirit. After the initial success, Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840's, maintaining "the Carol" philosophy to "strike a sledgehammer blow" for the poor, uneducated, and repressed.

Tipped to the page facing the first page of music is an Autograph Musical Quotation (approximately 6" x 10") Inscribed and Signed by Korngold in 1936. Korngold went to Hollywood in 1934 to adapt Mendelssohn's music for *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, and returned to score Michael Curtiz's *The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938). Fortuitously, he arrived back in Hollywood just before the Nazis annexed Austria, and, being Jewish, decided to stay in America, where he spent the rest of his life. Korngold won an Academy Award for *Robin Hood* and it was the first of several films scored by him, directed by Curtiz, and starring Errol Flynn, including *The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex* (1939) and *The Sea Hawk* (1940). After WWII he returned to classical composition, though today he is generally considered, along with Max Steiner, the father of film music.

[First Edition] Hugh Selwyn Mauberley POUND, Ezra [Used - Fine] [Hardcover]
3474.9 CAD
POUND, Ezra. Hugh Selwyn Mauberley. London: Ovid Press 1920. One of a limited edition of 200 numbered copies, this being copy number 126 of 165 unsigned copies. Decorative initials and colophon by Edward Wadsworth. Printed on hand made paper by John Rodker and bound in quarter tan cloth and brown paper covered boards, with printed title label on upper cover. Top edge slightly foxed and dusty otherwise a Fine copy, as issued. "Hugh Selwyn Mauberley "is Pound's first completely 'modern' poem: Dr Leavis thinks the earlier poems are mainly important in so far as they lead up to Mauberley, and Eliot in his introduction to the Selected Poems sees, also, the concentration and the freedom of the handling of verse in Mauberley as the reward of years of patient craftsmanship, of apprenticeship to strict techniques. Mauberley in Pound's general opus has the same place as The Waste Land in Eliot's; it is, so to say, his diploma piece. It is, in a way, the same sort of poem: a commentary on, a vision of, the fragmentation of contemporary civilization. I used to think a large part of its importance lay in the fact that, essentially, it made The Waste Land possible; Eliot's dedication of that poem to Pound as il miglior fabbro I interpreted in my own mind as being to the better craftsman, rather than to the better artist. I now think Mauberley a better poem than The Waste Land." G. S. Fraser Ezra Pound (Grove 1960).
