Hoffecker (Late a Representative From Delaware): Delivered in the House of Representatives and Senate, Fifty-Sixth Congress, Second Session."" The book is overall in very good condition with some minor signs of wear and age. The covers have some mild soiling and wear. The binding is good and sound. The interior is lightly toned from age but mostly nice and clean, though there may be the occasional page with a light bit of foxing or grubbiness. One of the leaves has a tear to the bottom margin which does not affect any text. Along with that there may be the very occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection such as a creased page corner, tiny chip or tear, light bit of soiling or grubbiness, etc. Generally though, it's a nice copy. The book measures approximately 10 1/2 inches by 7 inches and is 73 pages long. It is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait. Please look at all of the photos to further note the condition. *****************************************************************From Wikipedia: John Henry Hoffecker (September 12, 1827 June 16, 1900) was an American engineer and politician from Smyrna in Kent County, Delaware. He was a member of the Republican Party, who served as U.S. Representative from Delaware.Hoffecker was originally a member of the Whig Party, but like so many others, became a Republican in 1856. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1876 and 1884. He was also president of the Smyrna town council from 1878 until 1898. Elected to the state House in 1888, he served in the 1889/90 session and was chosen Speaker. He ran for governor in 1896 as the candidate of both the Union Republicans (controlled by (J. Edward Addicks), and the National Party (a rival to the Prohibition Party). However, enough votes went to the regular (Anti-Addicks) Republican candidate, John C. Higgins, that Democrat Ebe W. Tunnell was elected. Hoffecker was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1898, defeating incumbent Democratic U.S. Representative L. Irving Handy. He served in the Republican majority in the 56th Congress. On June 16, 1900, during a visit home from the 1900 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, Hoffecker suffered a stroke and died. He had served from March 4, 1899, until his death, during the administration of U.S. President William McKinley.

Inscribed ''To my old friend / Mr. Whisnant / with cordial / Xmas[?] greetings / Esther Pohl Lovejoy''. The memoir of Dr. Esther Lovejoy, describing her experiences in the Paris factory district of Levallois in the winter of 1917-1918, during the First World War, working at the Residence Sociale, known to the locals as The House of the Good Neighbor. This charitable ''social house'' had as its mission the care of the children of women who worked in the factories, poor families, and other disadvantaged individuals, including young women and the elderly. It also functioned as ''a clearing house for people in distress, giving immediate help in emergencies, and cooperating with other agencies and organizations for the relief of human suffering. It was in touch with hospitals, dispensaries, maternities, pre-natal and post-natal homes, creeches, canteens, milk and supply depots of different kinds.'' Lovejoy goes into great detail about the life and work at the House, and the prevailing social conditions which necessitated these specific relief efforts, as well has her philosophy and views on this charitable work. Dr. Esther Pohl Lovejoy (1869-1967) was an American physician and public health pioneer, and a suffrage activist. In 1907, she became the first woman appointed to direct a department of health in a major U.S city (Portland, Oregon). She was the second woman to graduate from the University of Oregon Medical School, and the first to practice medicine. Later in life, in 1951 and 1957, she was awarded the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal by the American Medical Women's Association in for contributions to the field of medicine.

He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1876 and 1884. He was also president of the Smyrna town council from 1878 until 1898. Elected to the state House in 1888, he served in the 1889/90 session and was chosen Speaker. He ran for governor in 1896 as the candidate of both the Union Republicans (controlled by (J. Edward Addicks), and the National Party (a rival to the Prohibition Party). However, enough votes went to the regular (Anti-Addicks) Republican candidate, John C. Higgins, that Democrat Ebe W. Tunnell was elected. Hoffecker was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1898, defeating incumbent Democratic U.S. Representative L. Irving Handy. He served in the Republican majority in the 56th Congress. On June 16, 1900, during a visit home from the 1900 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, Hoffecker suffered a stroke and died. He had served from March 4, 1899, until his death, during the administration of U.S. President William McKinley.

Inscribed ''To my old friend / Mr. Whisnant / with cordial / Xmas[?] greetings / Esther Pohl Lovejoy''. The memoir of Dr. Esther Lovejoy, describing her experiences in the Paris factory district of Levallois in the winter of 1917-1918, during the First World War, working at the Residence Sociale, known to the locals as The House of the Good Neighbor. This charitable ''social house'' had as its mission the care of the children of women who worked in the factories, poor families, and other disadvantaged individuals, including young women and the elderly. It also functioned as ''a clearing house for people in distress, giving immediate help in emergencies, and cooperating with other agencies and organizations for the relief of human suffering. It was in touch with hospitals, dispensaries, maternities, pre-natal and post-natal homes, creeches, canteens, milk and supply depots of different kinds.'' Lovejoy goes into great detail about the life and work at the House, and the prevailing social conditions which necessitated these specific relief efforts, as well has her philosophy and views on this charitable work. Dr. Esther Pohl Lovejoy (1869-1967) was an American physician and public health pioneer, and a suffrage activist. In 1907, she became the first woman appointed to direct a department of health in a major U.S city (Portland, Oregon). She was the second woman to graduate from the University of Oregon Medical School, and the first to practice medicine. Later in life, in 1951 and 1957, she was awarded the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal by the American Medical Women's Association in for contributions to the field of medicine.

What artist was better suited to Poe's dark tale than Alice Neel! She loved the story, would even giggle and shriek at readings. Along with two color lithographs, she included an etching of a skull-like self-portrait which was originally a pen and ink drawing, and 2 smaller black & white text illustrations. Raphael Soyer, in his afterword, tells of his reaction to seeing Neel's paintings for the first time: 'a veritable inferno!'
