Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information The owners of Foursquare Distillery, the Seale family, can trace its roots on Barbados back to the 1650s, and can reference five generations of rum-making expertise dating back to 1820. The establishment of the Foursquare brand, however, came much later. While the family could lay claim to one of Barbados’ oldest trading houses, Reginald Leon Seale was prohibited, like other traders, from selling rum directly to consumers under the Barbados Excise Law. His method around this issue was to establish a distribution business in Bridgetown in the early 1900s - and this was the birth of the R. L. Seale brand. R. L. Seale was not the only trader who took this course of action, but he was one of the very few successful ones. This prosperity provided the opportunity for expansion, and from 1962 to 1993, the rum portfolios of ESA Field and Alleyne Arthur, including Old Brigand, Taylor's Falernum and Doorly's were acquired. In order for the multiple brands to be effectively consolidated, a decision was made that ESA Field and Old Brigand would focus on the local market, where they had always done well, while Doorly's would become an export brand This was the state of affairs until 1995 when the company, then led by Sir David Seale, gambled on the purchase of a sugar factory whose oldest building dates back to 1636 and was mostly decrepit. His intuition paid off, however, and that site became Foursquare Distillery, Now, it stands as one of the most efficient and modern rum distilleries around, complete with a state-of-the-art bottling plant on site.

Following the Pattison Crisis, Aultmore (pronounced ‘Ollt-MORE’) closed for several years. The distillery briefly reopened in 1903, but was forced into closure once more owing to the barley shortage during the First World War. Finish: Leather, nutmeg, bitter cocoa, and sweet pipe tobacco. Distillery Information The Glenlivet rather grandly styles itself as “the single malt that started it all” but there’s more than a grain of truth to its claim. In the early 18th and 19th century most Highland malt whisky was distilled illegally. Despite its shady beginnings, Glenlivet had a reputation that reached as far as London. Indeed when George IV visited the region in 1822, he wanted to try the fabled Glenlivet and was given something that was described as “whisky long in wood, long in uncorked bottles, mild as milk, and the true contraband gout in it.” The man behind that famed dram was George Smith, a tenant farmer on land belonging to Alexander Gordon, Duke of Gordon. The Duke, not surprisingly, was a great advocate for reforming the draconian legislation around distilling so that he could commercialise it. 1823 saw the passing of the Excise Act which liberalised distilling but also provided more resources and power to excise officers. One of the first people to take advantage of the new laws was George Smith who built a new distillery at Glenlivet in the Highlands on what was once a farm distillery called Upper Drummin.

There are some very nice spices present too, specifically nutmeg and ginger. Finish: Finish is very smooth and long. Distillery Information The distillery set-up is all about creating and then capturing esters – the fermentation is long, the lyne arms of the stills are angled upwards, the copper conversation a long one, the reflux plentiful.

Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information Bruichladdich was built by Barnett Harvey in 1881. Five years later, the Bruichladdich Distillery Company was founded and renovation and refurbishment commenced. The ‘Laddie’, as it is affectionately known, is often considered to be the fruitiest, most inventive Islay malt and, indeed, there has been some contention as to whether it has truly attained Islay-status. Bruichladdich countered this with the introduction of the Port Charlotte range and later with the 2008-released Octomore, the world’s most heavily peated whisky with a phenol content of 131ppm. Then the distillery went almost the complete opposite direction and created The Botanist Gin!

Palate: The palate is very powerful and complex. Smooth texture. Finish: Elegant long lasting aftertaste. Indeed when George IV visited the region in 1822, he wanted to try the fabled Glenlivet and was given something that was described as “whisky long in wood, long in uncorked bottles, mild as milk, and the true contraband gout in it.”

Smooth texture. Finish: Elegant long lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information One of only six dedicated grain distilleries in Scotland, the North British distillery was founded in 1885 by Andrew Usher, William Sanderson, James Watson and John Crabbie. It has a noble history, and the four founders built the distillery in a bid to challenge the monopoly the Distillers Company Ltd. had over the supply of grain. Production began in 1887 from a single Coffey still, though within three years the capacity had doubled to three million gallons a year. For a period, North British was the largest grain distillery in Scotland. Ironically, a merger between DCL and IDV in 1997 resulted in North British being jointly run by the company which it has first set up to oppose. Awkward… Whisky from North British appears in a few famous blends such as Johnnie Walker Black Label, J&B Rare, The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark. In 2018, the first distillery bottling of North British single grain was released in collaboration with Douglas Laing.

Palate: A rich, complex, and smooth taste. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information Although the Speyside distillery was founded in 1956, it was not until 1990 that production began. The respected whisky maker George Christie purchased land near Kingussie and founded a grain distillery in 1957. In 1962, he commenced the building of a malt whisky distillery on the site and the work was completed in 1987. The new distillery sits opposite the site of the old Drumguish distillery, which closed in 1911. Speyside is rather artisanal in terms of scale; with a capacity of a mere 600,000 litres annually and a small workforce of just four under the management of Andrew Shand. Most of this is bottled as The Speyside, although bottlings are also released under the names Glentromie and Drumguish respectively. The company’s Glasgow base also produces Yokozuna, Mongolia’s best selling blended Scotch. The distillery sits to the east of Kingussie on the banks of the river Tromie and the Speyside distillery can lay claim to being the closest to the River Spey’s headwaters.

Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information Ardbeg is one of the most famous whisky distilleries in the world, and for good reason. The Ardbeg distillery produces some of the finest single malt whisky around and has been doing so for centuries. The Ardbeg distillery is located on the island of Islay, off the coast of Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1815 by John McDougall and has been in operation ever since. Ardbeg whisky is renowned for its smoky flavour, which comes from the peat that is used to smoke the barley during the whisky-making process. Ardbeg lies solitary, in a small cove off the south coast of Islay. It was once a stage for illegal distillation when smugglers took advantage of the remote location and exceptional conditions for whisky production. Eventually, excise men seized the original, illegitimate buildings from the smugglers and destroyed them. It was not until 1815 that a legal distillery was established and founded by John McDougall. Sitting nearby leviathan distilleries; Laphroaig and Lagavulin, Ardbeg has always produced a very sought-after single malt, despite Ardbeg's production scale being less than half that of its neighbours.

Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information Glen Moray was built on the site of the West Brewery to the west of Elgin on the banks of the River Lossie. Following reconstruction, Glen Moray Distillery was founded in 1897. It was not long before the distillery closed in 1910, though it reopened a couple of years later, shortly before closing once more. In 1920, Macdonald and Muir acquired the distillery and once more spirit flowed from the stills. The distillery operated its own floor maltings, converting to a Saladin Box in 1957, which remained in use until 1978. During the 1970s, the two original stills were replaced and two further stills were added, giving the distillery a total yearly capacity of two million litres. In 1996 Macdonald and Muir Ltd renamed itself Glenmorangie Plc and in 2004 the group was acquired by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, for the princely sum of £300 million. The Glenmorangie distillery pioneered exotic wood finishes and Glen Moray championed white wine finishes, releasing a Chardonnay finish and two Chenin Blanc finishes in 1999. Most of the whisky from Glen Moray has long since been used in blended Scotch. More recently, the Glenmorangie Co decided to cease producing whisky for blending and subsequently, in 2008, the distillery was put up for sale. There are several official house bottlings, but independent bottlings are rather rare.

The Glenlivet distillery has grown in the post-war period to become one of the biggest single malt distilleries. The Glenlivet brand is the biggest selling single malt whisky in the United States and the second biggest selling single malt brand globally after Glenfiddich. Today, the distillery is owned by the Chivas Brothers subsidiary of the French alcoholic beverages company Pernod Ricard, which also oversees the distillery's production of 5,900,000 proof litres per annum. The majority of this – enough for 6 million bottles – is sold as The Glenlivet single malt, with the remainder being used in Pernod Ricard's blended whisky brands.

It was founded in 1798 by Magnus Euson. Until it was licensed in 1825 its production was illicit and Euson was assisted in evading the excisemen by a kinsman who was a Kirk elder and hid the contraband under the pulpit. By the 1880s Highland Park had an established reputation and at one time both the King of Denmark and the Emperor of Russia declared it to be the finest whisky they had ever tasted.

Distillery Information The Linkwood distillery sits in Elgin, drawing its water from the springs of Millbuies Loch. Next to the distillery is a large and rather beautiful reservoir that plays host to a variety of local wildlife including ducks and swans, the latter can be seen gracing the label of the twelve-year-old bottling. Linkwood is home to two stillhouses, Linkwood A, which is currently not in use, houses the two original stills, and Linkwood B, in which a further four stills operate. The distillery has a capacity of 2.24 million litres per annum and the majority of the whisky produced is used for blending, notably in Johnnie Walker. Thanks to Diageo there have been, of late, several single malt whiskies released from Linkwood. In 2008, three twenty-six-year-olds were launched, notable for their 50cl bottles and having spent the last fourteen years of their maturation in either rum, red wine or port casks.

Orkney Distillery 16 Year Old 2006 Single Cask (Private Label) 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Buttered sourdough, soft, creamy grist, and freshly charred oak. A touch of sawdust leads to custard pastries and fresh peach. Palate: Malty minerality and hearty old oak with hints of drying leather and syrup-soaked prunes. Floral barley resides at the core with softly drying, woody spices slowly building. Finish: A cider apple tang brings things to a close, with savoury cooking spice and peppery oak creeping in among caramelised stone fruit. Distillery Information Master of Malt was founded in 1985 as a retailer and bottler of whisky and other fine spirits. Today, we bottle new whiskies all the time, and our policy is simple: we only ever put our name on anything that makes us go “Wow!” That’s all there is to it! Being extremely picky, we regularly try dozens of cask samples before we find one we’re willing to bottle (trying glass after glass of fine Scotch whisky is harder than it sounds!). We also dearly love to bottle unusual whiskies too. When it comes to bottling, we like to leave things unadulterated. We never add caramel colouring to our whiskies, and we prefer to leave them at natural cask strength. In the rare occasion when we lower the bottling strength we never, ever use chill-filtration, as we believe this affects the flavour of good spirit, and we can’t have that! We also offer 3cl whisky samples of as many of our own bottlings as possible, to give you the opportunity to try before you buy. Plus, if you’re looking for an extra special gift, we are more than happy to personalise anything from our own range.

Benriach 25 Year Old 1997 Cask #7779 Cask Edition - Rum Barrel Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Impressive and charming nose. Palate: A rich, complex, and smooth taste. Finish: Perfect, long lasting finish. Distillery Information Benriach Distillery was founded in 1898 by John Duff. The Speysider has overcome a chequered history that began with opening just a year before The Pattison crash of 1899 followed by years of dormancy or changing of hands. Following monetary difficulties the distillery was sold to the Longmorn Distilleries Company, who closed it at the turn of the twentieth century. Benriach, named for the Gaelic for ‘speckled mountain’, saw an upturn in fortunes in the 1960s, however, and from 1965 onwards was run by new owners The Glenlivet Distillers. Seagrams purchased the distillery in 1978, then in 1985 two extra stills were added bringing the total to four. When Pernod Ricard took over Seagram’s whisky division in 2001 Benriach was mothballed, but in April of 2004, Benriach was sold, along with several thousand casks, for £5.4million to the South African company, Infra Trading, combining their efforts with Burn Stewart director Billy Walker. They reopened the distillery the following year and soon established the Benriach Distilling Co. In 2008, the Benriach Distilling Co acquired a second distillery from Chivas Brothers in the shape of GlenDronach, before adding Glenglassaugh Distillery to its portfolio in 2013. Brown-Forman, the Louisville, Kentucky-based producer of Jack Daniel's, in-turn bought the Benriach Distilling Co in 2016 for £281 million. Today, Benriach is back in full production and has become a firm favourite for many Scotch whisky fans since it was reinvigorated under Walker and co. It has cemented a reputation as an unconventional whisky distiller with some of the most experimental casks in Speyside. Benriach ranks among the few distilleries in Scotland to still have operational floor maltings, one that was restarted in 2012 after it was closed in 1996. It also makes three different types of spirit, double distilled unpeated and peated as well as...
