Distillery Information Alnwick Brewery first started to make and sell beers in the 1860s from a brewery operating from the center of Alnwick, the capital of Northumberland, in England. The brewery was officially registered in September 1890 when they acquired Mason Brothers. It had a somewhat colourful history before being acquired in 1978 by the major Scottish brewer Dryboroughs who eventually closed it down in 1986. The factory manager Mr. Lindsay acquired the business name and on his death his son Ian, finding critical recipes relaunched the business in 2003, which he did with the grateful assistance of the Duchess of Northumberland. Ian kept the business afloat until 2013 when Harry Hotspur Holdings worked with him before acquiring it from him in 2013. Since then we have invested in a brew house at Hawkshill at Alnwick to ensure that the brand once again operates its own brewery. One of our investor shareholders is a former Newcastle Brown Master Brewer and he is overseeing quality and production. A graduate Chemist from Oxford he is ensuring we produce best quality beers and is also helping drive the future strategy of the business. The business currently provides as mainstream products Alnwick IPA, Gold, Amber & Lager in casks to over 50 public houses in the North of England. It also provides the same in bottles. John managed to rectify this situation, as in 1992 Dà Mhìle commissioned the world's first organic whisky (of the modern era) which was distilled at Springbank. This single malt would be a one-off batch to celebrate the millennium, as Dà Mhìle is Gaelic for 2000. He then worked with Loch Lomond on the first organic single grain, distilled in 2000. After creating the first organic blended whisky using the previous two, the idea to build their own distillery emerged, and in 2012 the Dà Mhìle Distillery was born. Dà Mhìle helped to cement Wales as a whisky producing nation as of 2016 (rules state that a country must have a minimum of 2 whisky distilleries to be recognised - Penderyn being the first).
