The Kilchoman distillery is the brainchild of Anthony Wills, a former wine industry professional who wished to found a small-scale, traditional distillery. The distillery remained in McGregor family hands for some time and in 1987 it was renamed the Balmenach Glenlivet Distillery Company. The distillery was sold in 1922 and subsequently became part of Distillers Company Limited in 1925 before it was acquired, in 1930, by Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD). The distillery employed an innovative nineteenth century French invention called a Saladin Box, a device which dramatically economised the malting process.

They reopened the distillery the following year and soon established the Benriach Distilling Co. Distillation commenced in November of 2005 and 80% of the spirit is matured in ex-bourbon casks, from Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky, the remaining spirit will be matured in Oloroso sherry butts. Distillery Information The Glen Spey distillery sits below the ruins of Castle Rothes, once home to the Earls of Rothes who lived there until a devastating fire in 1662. Now just a few sections of wall remain. The Glen Spey whisky distillery was founded as the Mill of Rothes in 1878 by James Stuart and Co, the buildings having started out life as an oatmeal mill. Six years later, James Stuart purchased the Macallan distillery and in 1887 the English company W & A Gilbey acquired the Glen Spey for £11,000. The distillery has some rather interesting features. For one, Glen Spey shares its water source, the Rothes Burn, with several other distilleries, though not only did they draw water, but also discard hot waters that had previously cooled their stills. By the time the water reached Glen Spey it was far too hot to cool the stills effectively, thus water coolers were employed. This is no longer necessary as regulations are somewhat stricter and the distilleries must now cool their water before discarding it. Another feature of note being the spirit stills, which are operated at a low pressure, thus negating the use of release valves. The spirit stills are also fitted with purifiers; these increase the reflux and so more of the spirit is distilled again before it is condensed. This provides a lighter tasting single malt whisky and a perfect blending component.

Distillery Information John Duff had previously owned the Fife Arms Inn at Lhanbryde and managed Glendronach distillery. He formed John Duff and Co with H Mackay, Charles Shirres, Alexander Grigor Allan and George Thomson and the company founded the Glenlossie whisky distillery in 1876. The Glenlossie distillery lies south of Elgin, in the village of Thomshill. Twenty years later, H Mackay became the manager following John Duff’s departure to Longmorn which he established with Charles Shirres and George Thomson. In 1919, Distillers Company Ltd acquired the Glenlossie distillery and just over a decade later transferred the distillery to Scottish Malt Distillers. During the 1960s, substantial advances were carried out, the distillery was converted from steam to electric power and in 1962 a further two stills were added, bringing the total to six. Today the distillery is mid-sized with a total annual capacity of 2.14m litres. Following the amalgamation of Distillers Company Ltd, Glenlossie is under Diageo ownership.
