Closing in 1837 and reopening in 1878, the distillery was acquired in 1890 by John Hopkins and Company. Today, Tobermory is the only distillery on the Isle of Mull. The distillery has quite a small annual capacity of just one million litres and runs at but three quarters of this. In 1930, the distillery closed and was used as a power plant. It was not the only time Tobermory had been used for purposes other than whisky distillation; in 1982 the buildings were leased to a dairy company who used them for storing cheese. Tobermory is currently under Burn Stewart ownership following the acquisition of both the distillery and a good stock of whisky for £800,000. The malted barley is shipped from the Port Ellen maltings at the South-East of Islay, also home to a more recent experiment whereby some casks are sent for maturation on the island, these are bottled as Ledaig. There is now just one official bottling in production; a ten year-old. There have also been independent bottlings and although popularity has been weaning, under the management of Alan McConnochie of Bunnahabhain fame, there is expected to be a resurgence.

Distillery Information The Glasgow Distillery, founded in 2012 by Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward, aimed to revive premium spirits production in Glasgow. The city, once a whisky hub, had its original Glasgow Distillery closed in 1902. The new distillery, the first to open and release whisky in the city since then, is independently owned and employs 17 people, including six distillers and a full-time cooper. The distillery produces three styles of whisky throughout the year: double distilled with unpeated malted barley, double distilled with peated malted barley, and triple distilled with unpeated malted barley. This variety allows for a wide spectrum of flavours in their single malt whiskies. Barley is sourced from UK suppliers, and the grain is milled and mashed in a stainless steel semi-lauter tun with a staged water addition to maximise sugar extraction. Seven stainless steel washbacks ensure a deep clean between different spirit styles. The wash, around 8% ABV, is distilled in two 2,500-litre wash stills, named Tara and Francis, with spirit stills named Mhairi and Margaret. These stills were chosen to enhance the fruity nature of the spirit, with slow distillation runs maximising copper contact to remove impurities. White spirits, including gin and vodka, are produced in a still named Annie, allowing for flexibility with fresh botanicals. The distillery’s casks are stored at various third-party sites, with plans for an on-site warehouse. The on-site cooper, Shug McMurray, manages cask repairs. The Glasgow Distillery is known for its diverse cask finishes, using a wide range of speciality casks. The core range, Glasgow 1770, includes The Original, Peated, and Triple Distilled whiskies, priced under £50 for the core range and just under £60 for limited editions. The distillery's focus on accessibility, authenticity, and transparency,...

It is located a mile or so south of the town of Aberlour and the River Spey itself. A wide range of Single Malts is produced. The GlenAllachie is also home to the Macnair's and White Heather brands. The water comes from dam heads over two miles (3km) from the distillery. The Henshead and Blackstank streams flow into Beatschach Burn, which flows to The GlenAllachie. Capacity is 4 million liters of alcohol, though the current owners have reduced output to 600,000 million liters while focusing on Single Malt production. This reduction in turn has allowed a longer fermentation time of 160 hours. Unlike many Scottish distilleries, there are two separate spirit safes which allows the independent operation of the two sets of stills. As the distillery is designed to be gravity fed, there are horizontal condensers which make it easier to maintain a consistent temperature, or modify it to alter the character of the spirit. There are 16 warehouses housing 50,000 casks, with two more traditional low-ceilinged dunnage warehouse in the pipeline.

Producer Information Cockburn's Port is a historic Port house, that has production dating back to 1815. Scotsman Robert Cockburn established the house on his return to Portugal after previously fighting in the Napoleonic Wars under Wellington. The company became a major Port brand throughout the 19th and 20th Centuries. The company's base is the Quinta dos Canais in the Upper Douro, which has 97 hectares (240 acres) of vineyards on rocky schist soils. The quinta takes its name from the system of stone channels built in the 19th Century which are used as a water source to irrigate the vines. First released in 1969 and sourced from vineyards in the Upper Douro, the Special Reserve is matured in oak casks for five years prior to bottling. All other styles of port are produced, from Ruby through to Vintage, including Tawnies and White Port. The modern offering from Cockburn is the Portonic, a blend of white port and tonic water availible on the market in a ready-to-drink can. Producer: Cockburn's Port Ratings: WA 63 WS 95 Vintage: 2017 Size: 750ml ABV: 20% Varietal: Port Blend Red Country/Region: Portugal, Douro Insane aromas of crushed berry, flowers and lifted ester like a fermenting lager. Full body, tannic yet so finely grained in texture. Extremely long and beautiful. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2017 Vintage Port is a blend of 52% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca and small portions of Sousão and Alicante Bouschet bottled about a month before this tasting after 18 months in seasoned vats. However, I actually tasted a pre-bottling sample because there was some fear of bottling shock. This is sourced from south-facing vineyards in Douro Superior that have a higher proportion of Touriga Nacional. It comes in with 107 grams of residual sugar. The terroir and the vintage combine to make this a wine that seems at the moment a bit bigger than Dow's this year. Unlike in 2015, however, it also maintains its balance well. This has velvet for texture, fine aromatics and a long finish, but it is always elegant, never jammy. It is still concentrated, and aeration proves how well it can evolve. It finishes with some pop and power, but it will be approachable relatively young. Relatively is the key word there, as it shows plenty of power. Like the Warre's, a Symington sibling this issue, it seems to be a cut above this year, the best in the brand for a while, and superior to both the 2016 and 2015. It is able to hold up to some of its more famous siblings in the Symington stable this issue. Wine Spectator: Packed with creamed blueberry, açaí berry and boysenberry fruit and carried by waves of velvety structure and warm fruitcake notes, this is showy in style, featuring an embedded graphite spine, alluring spice details and a flash of floral nuance through the finish, imparting superior range and length. Producer Information Cockburn's (Coh-burns) was founded in 1815 and has grown to become one of the world's great port houses. Relatively closed and restrained on the nose but with an underlying ripeness with intense dark cassis backed by powerful yet fine-grained tannins, big and broad on the finish. This is a wine for the long haul and excellent value – Cockburn is truly back on form. Total production of 2,450 cases. James Suckling: This shows fantastic graphite and dark-berry character with black-stone undertones and hints of dried roses. Full-bodied and very tight and precise. Good kick in the end. Mainly picked eight days after the mid-September rain: initially deep, ripe and dense on the nose, opening up to reveal a scented berry fruit bouquet. Lovely plum and berry fruit on the palate supported by fine-grained, gravelly tannins and a long, structured finish. Combines depth and finesse in equal measure. James Suckling: Fantastic aromas of crushed berries and flowers. Some mineral undertones. Violets. Very fine and polished with ultra-fine tannins. Medium sweet. Fresh and extremely clean. The finish is long and persistent. It never really finishes, in fact, because just as it starts to, you’ll take another sip. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2015 Vintage Port is mostly a (Douro Superior) blend of Touriga Franca 41% and Touriga Nacional 37%, with old vines, Sousão and Alicante Bouschet making up the rest. It comes in at 104 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is the Bicentenary Edition of this old house. Focused and tight—probably the tightest of the Symington 2015s—it is hard-edged and precise, but it does seem to have streaks of alcohol and baked, slightly roasted fruit. This is the one in the Symington 2015 stable that most obviously fits the old Port stereotype—massive and impenetrable when young. It easily needs the most time. Big, deep and a bit harsh and astringent just now, it is a little hard to evaluate fully. It may well improve with cellaring, but it will likely be the least attractive to drink young. It was also, to me, the least convincing for the moment, but it certainly has some upside potential. If it comes around well and integrates its parts, it should easily age gracefully for several more decades. Wine Spectator: Distinctive, with mint and blueberry notes leading the way before plum, pastis and blackberry cobbler flavors fill in behind them. Rounded and open in feel, with modest grip, putting this on course to come around a little sooner than the rest of the pack. Shows a light woodsy echo on the finish. Size: 750ML Proof: 38 (19%ABV) Origin: Portugal Distillery: Cockburns An experimental expression from Cockburn's, Tawny Eyes is a vibrant barrel-aged tawny Port. The folks behind the creation are more than enthusiastic about mixing it (ginger ale is the preferred pairing), but that doesn't mean it can't hold its own neat – if you do enjoy it on its own, we've heard it goes rather well with sweet, fruity pastries. Cockburn's Tawny Eyes Port Tasting Notes Nose: A lively and fine-textured port with generous aromas of honey Palate: Caramel and hint of vanilla. Finish: Subtle flavours of red fruit and walnuts . Distillery Information Cockburn's has always questioned the so-called ‘rules’ for making port. Back in 1815, Robert and John Cockburn, two brothers from Scotland, bypassed the stuffy merchant’s fair in Porto and bought the very best grapes directly from farmers upriver in the Douro. The look on their faces…We’ve done things our way, declaring vintage years whenever we feel it’s right, regardless of what rival port houses might think.

This combines rich and spicy pot-still spirit with a dark and fruity port pipe to create an almost unique bottling. Matured initially for six years in American-oak barrels, the whiskey was reracked into a single port-seasoned cask for 22 more. It's taken a long time, but the result is worth the wait. It is certainly balanced with deliciously luscious fruit, and a rich texture that is suggesting good aging potential. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2016 Vintage Port, bottled in May 2018, is a blend of 62% Touriga Nacional, 21% Touriga Franca and small portions of Sousão and Alicante Bouschet. It comes in with 106 grams of residual sugar. Fairly intense and even tighter than Graham's, this might be somewhat approachable in a few years, but it really needs to open up. It will require more time than the wines like Warre's and Smith Woodhouse in the Symington stable. Beautifully wrought, this looks like an impressive Cockburn's, more balanced and fresher than the stolid and jammy 2015 yet still with fine concentration to go with the freshness. Wine Spectator: This is quite primal, with lush plum, blackberry and açai berry reduction rolling through, pushed by warm licorice and Black Forest cake notes. A substantial bass line thumps on the finish, showing plenty of sparkly spice and incense details hitting the top range. Love the polished tannins, which are totally folded into the wine. Reminds me of the 1947 Cockburn.
