The Kilchoman distillery is the brainchild of Anthony Wills, a former wine industry professional who wished to found a small-scale, traditional distillery. Subsequently Mark and Rohaise French, of the Rochside Farm, were keen on using local produce (and had their own food label, Islay Fine Food), so the idea of establishing an artisan, traditional distillery fitted in perfectly with their ethos. Distillation commenced in November of 2005 and 80% of the spirit is matured in ex-bourbon casks, from Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky, the remaining spirit will be matured in Oloroso sherry butts. There is a visitor centre on the site and a Kilchoman new make spirit has already been released, exhibiting a distinct nuttiness and a sumptuous peat even at this early stage.

In 1962, he commenced the building of a malt whisky distillery on the site and the work was completed in 1987. The new distillery sits opposite the site of the old Drumguish distillery, which closed in 1911. Speyside is rather artisanal in terms of scale; with a capacity of a mere 600,000 litres annually and a small workforce of just four under the management of Andrew Shand. Most of this is bottled as The Speyside, although bottlings are also released under the names Glentromie and Drumguish respectively. The company’s Glasgow base also produces Yokozuna, Mongolia’s best selling blended Scotch. The distillery sits to the east of Kingussie on the banks of the river Tromie and the Speyside distillery can lay claim to being the closest to the River Spey’s headwaters.

Brian, and by 1951 he had founded Stanley P Morrison Ltd, where he was party to many large brokerage transactions with the major blending houses until his death in 1971. In 1963 a chance lunchtime encounter at a Glasgow restaurant led to the agreement of the purchase of Islay’s oldest distillery, Bowmore (established in 1779), that evening. With that, Morrison-Bowmore was established. The brand eventually owned distilleries such as Auchentoshan as well and oversaw much expansion in Bowmore with new stills, mash tun, washbacks, and ancillary equipment. Family member and managing director W. Brian Morrison (who joined in late 1964) was crucial as the company supplied blending and single malt businesses, and took Morrison Bowmore to such heights that Suntory simply had to snap it up in 1994. The family’s story did not end there, though.
