Allied Domecq acquired Tormore in 1989 and five years later the first official house bottling was released, Tormore twelve year-old. Independent bottlings are rather rare, and the official range is quite small, one can, however, find Tormore in the Ballantine’s blend. Presently under Pernod Ricard ownership following Chivas’ 2005 acquisition of Allied Domecq.

The distillery lies on the southern slopes of the rugged mountain range, Ben Rinnes and draws its water from a spring amongst the lofty peaks.Much like its neighbour Braeval, no official bottling has been released from the distillery and it is unlikely, according to its owners, that there will ever be any; there have been, however, some independent bottlings from bottlers including Deerstalker and Duncan Taylor. Today, the distillery has capacity of 4.5 million litres per annum.

Aged for 28 years and finished in Sauternes dessert wine casks, it’s rich, complex, and hard to pin down – and that’s exactly the point. Palate: Creamy lemon curd, dried apricot, melon sorbet, soft spice. Finish: Ginger heat, vanilla cream, tropical fruit salad. Distillery Information Over the course of Loch Lomond’s existence, the distillery has released seven different malts. Four of them were destined for blending, the remaining three were intended to be bottled as single malt whiskies, though most have been released as such over the years. Bottlings have been under the names: Inchmurrin, Inchmoan, Inchfad, Crotengea, Glen Douglass, Craiglodge and, naturally, Loch Lomond, each with varying peat levels. The name Loch Lomond is used for single malt releases though it is also used for a blended Scotch produced onsite using both grain and malt whisky. Loch Lomond was in such a good position to release so many different whiskies as it had an unusual set up of stills. There were three sets of stills, two were fitted with rectification columns as well as five continuous stills. Loch Lomond sits in an industrial complex, once home to Britain’s earliest car factory. The distillery was built in 1965 by the Littlemill Distillery Company Ltd, under the ownership of Duncan Thomas and American Barton Brands. Production began a year later.

It’s a Speysider that’s taken a detour through a French château and come back wearing velvet loafers. Strathmill 28 Year Old 1996 - Mission Gold (Murray McDavid) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Red currants, cigar box, stewed prunes. Palate: Chocolate malt, raspberry coulis, set honey, clove. Finish: Mocha cream, dried cranberry, oaky warmth. Distillery Information Single malt Scotch whisky from the Strathmill distillery is decidedly rare. There has been but one official bottling, discounting the two casks released in 1992 to celebrate the distillery’s centenary, and only a small number of independent releases. There is a dearth of whisky despite the unique, indulgent character that Strathmill Scotch tends to proffer. The distinctive taste is due, in part, to the addition of purifiers on the lyne arms and condensers of the stills, imparting a delicate nature to the whisky. The reason for this, is that the Strathmill distillery has long since produced whisky for blending and is notably a component in Old Master, Dunhill, and most significantly, J&B. It was in 1962, that the gin specialists W & A Gilbey merged with United Wine Traders. They subsequently formed International Distillers and Vintners. Justerini and Brooks were among their number, thus the association with J&B. The distillery was first founded in 1891 in a converted mill as the Glenisla-Glenlivet distillery. It did not become known as Strathmill until four years had passed and W & A Gilbey acquired the distillery for the princely sum of £9,500. During the latter part of the 20th century, International Distillers and Vintners were acquired by Watney Mann and later by Grand Metropolitan. In 1997, Grand Metropolitan merged with Guinness to form Strathmill’s current owners, Diageo.

Distillery Information Acclaimed and highly respected independent Scotch whisky bottler Murray McDavid was established in 1996 by Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin, and Gordon Wright. It is based at the closed Coleburn distillery, in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside region, ageing whisky in quality oak casks from around the world, famed for their excellent single cask bottlings such as those in the Mission series. On 19 December 2000 Murray McDavid purchased the Bruichladdich distillery, which was dormant at that time, and returned it to production, though it was later acquired by Remy Cointreau in 2012. Murray McDavid even have their own boat - that’s not something every bottler, or distillery for that matter, can shout about. The eponymously named 60ft wooden boat is moored on the River Clyde in Glasgow and offers whisky tasting and trips out to the ‘Whisky Isles’ on the West Coast of Scotland.

It is located near Port Askaig and sits in lush, floral surroundings, overlooking the cove and the Paps of southern Jura. The distillery draws its water from Loch Nam Ban, whose waters travel through limestone and peat before reaching their beneficiary, Caol Ila. The whisky distillery was sold to Norman Buchanan in 1852 and then, following monetary hardship, to the Glasgow-based blenders Bulloch, Lade and Co who renovated the buildings in 1879. Following liquidation, Distillers Company Ltd acquired Caol Ila and the distillery was subsequently transferred to Scottish Malt Distillers. The capacity is moderate at 3.65 million litres annually, the majority of which is used in Johnnie Walker blends. Just 5% is kept for maturation as single malt. From 1999, unpeated single malts have been experimented with and in 2006 the first unpeated bottling was released in the form of an eight year-old. Caol Ila, whose name derives from the Gaelic for ‘Sound of Islay’, has been included in the Diageo Classic Malts range, exhibiting twelve and eighteen year-old expressions as well as a Moscatel-finished Distillers Edition. Independent bottlings can also be found.

Size: 500ML Proof: 130 (65%ABV) Origin: Australia Distillery: Fleureiu This peated single malt was matured for three years in Apera wine casks, an Australian sweet wine, similar to sherry, so expect plenty of sweet, stewed fruit and hearty smoke here. Fleurieu 3 Year Old - Batch 2 (That Boutique-y Whisky Company) 500ML Tasting Notes Nose: Poached stone fruits, caramelised nuts, burnt sugar, and whispers of medicinal peat smoke. Palate: Hearty helpings of sticky sweet raisins and dates, with fig rolls and nutty malt. A touch of salinity arrives in time, bringing savoury balance. Finish: Oaken spice and coastal smoke linger, backed up by dense toffee and dried fruits. Distillery Information Fleurieu was founded in 2016 by a husband and wife duo of ex-brewers, who interestingly opt for an eight-day fermentation using brewer's yeast, rather than the more traditional distiller's yeast. The Fleurieu proudly weathers the wild southern ocean. In the lee of the mount lofty ranges, the fleurieu coast extends from the sandy surf beaches of coorong to the windswept rugged clifftops of the cape. Situated on the waters edge in the river port of goolwa is our distillery. It is here the whisky develops expressive maple and vanilla oak overtones mixed with spicy sea-air aromas. These elegantly combine to create a smooth bodied character that comes only from maturation on the southern coast.
