It is named after the village and manor of Mackmyra, where the first distillery was established, in the residential district of Valbo, south-west of Gävle. The toponym is commonly suggested as deriving from owlet moths (Swedish: nattflyn) and mire (Swedish: myr). However, owlet moths have all but disappeared from present-day Mackmyra, due to the gradual rebound of land—a result of the melting of ice sheets 10,000 years ago. Mackmyra Svensk Whisky AB is a publicly traded company, listed in December 2011 on Nasdaq OMX's alternative-investment market First North. The company has about 45 employees with annual revenues of around SEK 100 million, and its biggest shareholder is the Swedish farmer's co-op Lantmännen.

Palate: On the palate it is very elegant, rich and full-bodied. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information The Bacardi-owned Royal Brackla gained its regal prefix in 1835 when King William IV bestowed a Royal Warrant upon the distillery. It was the first distillery to attain such an accolade and the spirit was heralded accordingly as the ‘King’s own whisky’. Lying in blissful serenity in the Highlands, not far South of the town of Nairn, Brackla's life blood is the pure waters of the Cawdor Burn. Its capacity today is large at some 3.9 million litres and all of this, save for a few thousand casks, is used in Dewar’s blended products. The distillery was founded in 1812, by Captain William Fraser and it was not until 1919 that it parted from Fraser-family hands, after it was acquired by the Aberdeen-based James Leict and John Mitchell. Brackla ran in-house maltings for some time, though they were closed in 1966. Four years later the still capacity was increased with the addition of two further stills.

Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information Tullibardine whisky distillery was founded in 1949 on the site of an old brewery, one which was said to have brewed ale for King James IV’s coronation back in 1488! The brewery itself dated back to the 12th century so it's fair to say that the site has had an incredibly long brewing and distilling history. Named for Tullibardine Moor, the distillery draws its water from the Danny Burn and lies to the south-west of Blackford. The area is renowned for the purity of its water, indeed Highland Spring is bottled locally. Queen Helen, the wife of King Magnus of Alba, drowned in a ford after falling from her horse not far from the town and Blackford was named accordingly. Following purchase by Invergordon in 1971, Tullibardine’s stills capacity was increased from two to four. Two decades later, Invergordon was acquired by Whyte and Mackay and a year later the whisky distillery was shut down. In December of 2003, the distillery was put back into production following the June acquisition of Tullibardine for the sum of £1.1 million. A year later a Café and Shop were opened at the Tullibardine distillery, which today has a capacity of 2.5 million litres per annum.

Ardmore 8 Year Old 2017 Cask #22008011 - Cask Masters (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Toasted malt and honeyed fruit mingle with baked apple, orange peel, and a hint of smoke. Palate: Rich and full-bodied with notes of toffee, nutmeg, and dried apricot layered over smoky oak and Madeira sweetness. Finish: Long and warming with lingering malt, gentle spice, and a touch of wine-soaked fruit. Distillery Information Built in 1898, Adam Teacher established the distillery to ensure a good supply of whisky for Teachers blended whisky. The build followed a surge of demand for Teachers products and was part of an extensive expansion of the company, including an international marketing campaign. Lying just below Knockandy Hill, alongside the railway line between Inverness and Aberdeen, Ardmore was one of the last remaining distilleries to rely on coal powered fires to heat its stills and did not convert to steam 'til 2003. In 2005, Beam Global became the new owners after buying twenty wine and spirit companies from Allied Domecq, for five billion dollars. Shortly after the acquisition, Ardmore’s capacity was increased from 3 to 5.1 million litres and in 2007 its own bottling was, at last, released, namely Ardmore Traditional. ‘Traditional’, matured in bourbon casks, followed by a secondary maturation in quarter casks, was originally launched for the duty free market but was released also on the American market in March of 2008. One of the largest distilleries in Scotland, Ardmore is also the site for large scientific research laboratories. The whisky is mostly quite peated, but a small amount of un-peated whisky is released during a few weeks yearly in the shape of Ardmore Ardlair, though this is used exclusively in various blends.

Distillery Information Tamnavulin whisky distillery is found on the banks of the River Livet on the southern edge of Speyside – the world’s most famous whisky-making region. The name ‘Tamnavulin’ translates to ‘mill on the hill’ and is a reference to the ancient three-storey wool carding mi which sits on the distillery site and can be traced all the way back to 1560. The Tamnavulin whisky distillery draws its water from underground springs in the surrounding hillside and takes its cooling waters from the River Livet, whose headwaters rise in the Grampians in Moray before flowing eleven miles until their confluence with the River Avon. Tamnavulin was founded in 1966 by a subsidiary of Invergordon Distillers Ltd, the whisky distillery has changed little during its relatively short life. Tamnavulin is rather typical of 1960s-constructed distilleries and the exterior is decidedly industrial, in stark contrast to its markedly stunning locality.

The name Loch Lomond is used for single malt releases though it is also used for a blended Scotch produced onsite using both grain and malt whisky. Loch Lomond was in such a good position to release so many different whiskies as it had an unusual set up of stills. There were three sets of stills, two were fitted with rectification columns as well as five continuous stills. Loch Lomond sits in an industrial complex, once home to Britain’s earliest car factory. The distillery was built in 1965 by the Littlemill Distillery Company Ltd, under the ownership of Duncan Thomas and American Barton Brands. Production began a year later.

Craigellachie 9 Year Old 2015 (Cask #166/2015) - Cask Masters (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Full-bodied aromas. Delightful and refreshing. Here are green pastures and heather-field and the distillery is in close proximity to the blissful confluence of rivers Spey and Fiddich. From the whisky distillery, perched high on the rock of Craigellachie, one can gaze over the village and namesake, and the quaint John Telford-designed bridge which crosses the river Spey. The water is drawn from a spring on Conval Hill and feeds the 3.6 million litre annual capacity of Craigellachie distillery. Co-founded by Alexander Edward, of Aultmore fame, and Peter Mackie, of the blending company White Horse, the buildings were designed by the reputable Speyside architect, Charles Doig.

Size: 700ML Proof: 111.2 (55.6%ABV) Origin: Scotland Distillery: Benrinnes Benrinnes Distillery produced this 12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky, which the fun folks at Brave New Spirits finished in a first-fill French Sauvignon Blanc white wine barrique. Just 301 bottles were filled at 55.6% ABV. Benrinnes 12 Year Old 2013 Cask #2311807/2013 - Cask Masters (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Rich and delicate nose. Palate: Balanced and rich flavors. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information The original Benrinnes was sited almost a mile south-east of today’s distillery. Built on the Whitehouse Farm in 1826 by Peter McKenzie, the distillery was completely destroyed just three years later, after a great flood laid waste to the buildings. In 1835, a new distillery was built, sited on the side of its namesake, the 840m peak which looms over Speyside. Alongside four other distilleries, Benrinnes draws its water from springs on the mountain, tapping the Rowantree and Scurran Burns. Following a devastating fire at the end of the nineteenth century, BenRinnes was rebuilt, converting to electric power. The distillery has an unusual distillation method; the six stills are used to partially triple-distil the make. Benrinnes made use of a Saladin Box maltings system from 1964. In 1984, it was decommissioned and malt was bought in instead. Despite the long history of Benrinnes, there has only been one official bottling - in 1991 a fifteen year-old was released. Save for a few independent bottlings, the majority of the spirit has been used in blends, notably Johnnie Walker and J&B. Today, single malt whiskies from Benrinnes remain a rare treat. The distillery is currently under Diageo ownership.

Tomintoul 10 Year Old 2015 Cask #82/2015 - Cask Masters (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Impressive and charming nose. Palate: A rich, complex, and smooth taste. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste.. Distillery Information Tomintoul (pronounced ‘tom-in-TOWEL’) was built in 1964, under the ownership of Hay & Macleod and W & S Strong, in the village of the same name, which itself is one of Scotland’s highest, at an altitude of 345m (1132 feet). Drawing its water from the Ballantruan Spring, the whisky distillery sits in rugged terrain; jagged undulations surround and are specked with many a wooded clump. It is said the purity of the spring and the clean air at such an altitude contribute to the smooth, easy-drinking single malt of Tomintoul; indeed, they market their Scotch as ‘the easy drinking dram’. The distillery is rather large with a capacity of 3.3 million litres per annum. Tomintoul runs at maximum capacity, with a seven day working week and boasts a healthy storage capacity; its four warehouses can hold 75,000 casks. In 1974, the first official bottling was launched in the form of Tomintoul twelve year-old.

Size: 700ML Proof: 106.4 (53.2%ABV) Origin: Scotland Distillery: Mannochmore A marvellous single malt from Speyside's Mannochmore distillery, independently bottled by Brave New Spirits for the Cask Masters collection. Distilled in 2012, the whisky spent 13 years maturing, finishing in a first-fill Tokaj wine barrique for a tropical, fruity profile, packed with gummy sweets, lemon drops, and crisp apple. Mannochmore 13 Year Old 2012 Cask #2317201/2012 - Cask Masters (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Rich and delicate nose. Palate: Balanced and rich flavors. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information The Mannochmore distillery lies just south of Elgin in Morayshire, at the heart of Speyside. The distillery shares not only a site, but also the watersource - the Bardon Burn - with the Glenlossie distillery. However, Mannochmore is considerably larger; the three pairs of stills have a combined total capacity of 3.22 million litres annually. The site asserts a decidedly industrial aesthetic; there are onsite warehouses which boast space for 200,000 casks. Accordingly, the current owners Diageo use the space to store maturing spirit from other distilleries in addition to that of Mannochmore. The site also hosts a dark grains plant, processing draff and pot ale. Equally sizeable, the facility processes 1000 tonnes of dark grains for animal feed every week. The whisky distillery was built in 1971 by Scottish Malt Distillers, later to become a part of Diageo. It was managed by John Haig and Co. It was only comparatively recently - in 1992 - that single malt Scotch whisky was released from Mannochmore; for many years it had been a blending component and was a constituent of Haig blends. A more recent release, Loch Dhu, has attained popularity in Denmark, with the moniker ‘The Black Whisky’. Its colour is achieved by double charring the bourbon casks prior to maturation. The Black Whisky was latterly replaced by the similarly sinister-looking Cu Dhub, named for the Gaelic for Black Dog.

Distilled in 2012, the whisky spent 13 years maturing in a single bourbon barrel, bringing layers of vanilla sponge, waxy citrus, and floral Turkish Delight. A release of 255 bottles. Dailuaine 13 Year Old 2012 Cask #300700/2012 - Cask Masters (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Rich and delicate nose. Palate: Balanced and rich flavors. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information In 1852, William Mackenzie founded Dailuaine Distillery. Dailuaine derives from the Scottish Gaelic ‘An dail uaine’ meaning ‘green valley’, named most probably for those elegant undulations of the Spey valley in which the Dailuaine whisky distillery lies.William had also been a farmer who worked in the Carron area. Following his death in 1865, William Mackenzie’s wife leased the distillery to a banker from Aberlour called James Fleming, who, with William’s son, formed Mackenzie and Company in 1879. Five years later an extensive rebuild commenced, leaving the distillery as one of Scotland’s largest. Another five years on and Charles Doig built Scotland’s first pagoda roof, which graced the distillery until it collapsed in 1917 after a menacing conflagration desecrated the buildings. In 1898, Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd was formed, the group included an Aberdeen based grain distillery, fellow Speysider Imperial, Dailuaine distillery and the Skye-based Talisker. In 1925, Distillers Company Limited acquired the company, latterly amalgamating with Diageo. Dailuaine also operates a dark grains plant, whose principal job being to convert draff into feed for cattle. The plant currently processes around 900 tonnes weekly. The bulk of single malt produced at the distillery is used for blending in Johnnie Walker. The spirit is filled at Cambus and then transported to Blackrange for maturation in the Diageo-owned warehouses. Single malt bottlings from Dailuaine are few and far between; there have been few independent bottlings and but a handful of official releases.

Ardbeg 15 Year Old 2009 Cask #26001/2009 - Cask Masters (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Rich and delicate nose. Palate: A very pleasant, rich and smooth taste in the mouth. Lovely texture. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information Ardbeg is one of the most famous whisky distilleries in the world, and for good reason. The Ardbeg distillery produces some of the finest single malt whisky around and has been doing so for centuries. The Ardbeg distillery is located on the island of Islay, off the coast of Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1815 by John McDougall and has been in operation ever since. Ardbeg whisky is renowned for its smoky flavour, which comes from the peat that is used to smoke the barley during the whisky-making process. Ardbeg lies solitary, in a small cove off the south coast of Islay. It was once a stage for illegal distillation when smugglers took advantage of the remote location and exceptional conditions for whisky production. Eventually, excise men seized the original, illegitimate buildings from the smugglers and destroyed them. It was not until 1815 that a legal distillery was established and founded by John McDougall. Sitting nearby leviathan distilleries; Laphroaig and Lagavulin, Ardbeg has always produced a very sought-after single malt, despite Ardbeg's production scale being less than half that of its neighbours.

Glenglassaugh 11 Year Old 2014 Cask #173/2014 - Cask Masters (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Rich and delicate nose. Palate: Balanced and rich flavors. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information The stills of the Glenglassaugh distillery fell silent in November of 1986. Following the closure, a handful of official bottlings have been released. In 2008, the Dutch-based Scaent Group acquired the distillery for £5 million and reopened it in November of that year. The Glenglassaugh distillery sits on a hillside in the Glassaugh Glen in close proximity to the sea. The distillery was founded in 1875 by the Glenglassaugh Distillery Company and the build cost £10,000. In 1887, refurbishments were carried out on the site, under the control of Alexander Morrison; stills were installed and equipment was modernized. Five years later, former customers Robertson and Baxter acquired the distillery and promptly resold it to the Highland Distilleries Company for £15,000. Between 1908 and 1960 the Glenglassaugh whisky distillery was only in operation very briefly, for it closed and reopened frequently. Just before reopening in 1960, an extensive rebuild was carried out and two new stills were installed; these were significantly larger than the previous stills and consequently doubled the total annual capacity to one million litres. During this time the onsite maltings were shut down and from then on Tamdhu Distillery provided the malt. Over the years Glenglassaugh whisky has been a constituent of many blends including the popular Famous Grouse and the American favourite, Cutty Sark. Today there are a few official house bottlings and a handful of independent releases.

Palate: On the palate it is very elegant, rich and full-bodied. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information Over the course of Loch Lomond’s existence, the distillery has released seven different malts. Four of them were destined for blending, the remaining three were intended to be bottled as single malt whiskies, though most have been released as such over the years. Bottlings have been under the names: Inchmurrin, Inchmoan, Inchfad, Crotengea, Glen Douglass, Craiglodge and, naturally, Loch Lomond, each with varying peat levels.

Palate: Balanced and rich flavors. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information The Teaninich Distillery is one shrouded in mystery. Founded in 1817, the Highland single malt whisky producer today has an annual capacity of 10.2 million litres and distills for brands including Haig Dimple, VAT 69 and Johnnie Walker. Despite its size and stature (it’s Diageo’s third-largest whisky distillery, covering more than 20 acres), there’s not much out there about Teaninich as a whisky in its own right – which is rather a shame as the liquid exudes as much character and body as its two illustrious near-neighbours: Dalmore and Glenmorangie. It was Captain Hugh Munro, head of the local clan, who set up Teaninich more than 200 years ago. Fun fact: in 1887 it became the first distillery north of Inverness to have electricity and a telephone. Teaninich remained in Munro family hands up until 1904, when Robert Innes Cameron, formerly a major shareholder, became the sole owner. After his death in 1932, the site was acquired by Distillery Company Limited the following year. Teaninich was passed from pillar to post through various mergers and acquisitions during the latter part of the 20th century, and today the distillery is of course owned by Diageo.

The Glenlossie distillery lies south of Elgin, in the village of Thomshill. Twenty years later, H Mackay became the manager following John Duff’s departure to Longmorn which he established with Charles Shirres and George Thomson. In 1919, Distillers Company Ltd acquired the Glenlossie distillery and just over a decade later transferred the distillery to Scottish Malt Distillers. During the 1960s, substantial advances were carried out, the distillery was converted from steam to electric power and in 1962 a further two stills were added, bringing the total to six. Today the distillery is mid-sized with a total annual capacity of 2.14m litres. Following the amalgamation of Distillers Company Ltd, Glenlossie is under Diageo ownership.

A total of 283 bottles join the Cask Masters collection. Teaninich 14 Year Old 2010 (Cask #708905/2010) - Cask Masters (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Satisfying and charming aromas. Palate: On the palate it is very elegant, rich and full-bodied. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste.

In 1825, he expanded and renamed the facilities Blair Athol. The distillery has had a long association with Bell’s Blended Scotch - their roots were entwined as far back as the mid nineteenth century. Blair Athol changed hands several times during the 1800s and eventually closed in 1932. A year later the distillery was acquired by Arthur Bell and Sons and today as much as 95% of the outturn is bourbon-matured and used in Bell’s blended products. The whisky boasts a swift maturation and the remaining five or so percent of spirit is aged in sherry casks and sold as single malt, mostly by independent bottlers.

Auchroisk 12 Year Old - Whiskyheroes (Brave New Spirits) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Great elegance and charm on the nose. Palate: A rich, complex, and smooth taste. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information The Auchroisk distillery was built by Justerini & Brooks in 1974, to ensure a steady supply of malt whisky for their J&B blend. The land and springs, including the water source, Dorie’s Well, were bought for £5million. Although launched as a blending malt, master blender Jim Milne declared the quality of the bourbon-matured whisky sound enough to be sold as single-malt; however, it was still missing something. Accordingly, the spirit was given a year in sherry casks, which produced a much fuller, and fundamentally, more complex flavour. Although not sold as Auchroisk (pronounced ‘OH-thrusk’) - the company deemed the name difficult to read - the distillery’s own bottlings were first sold, up until 2001, under the name Singleton and in 1986 the first bottling, a twelve year-old, was released under this name.

Ardlair 10 Year Old - Whiskyheroes (Brave New Spirits) The Untamed Grace Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Rich and delicate nose. Palate: A rich, complex, and smooth taste. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste.

The whisky distillery was sold to Norman Buchanan in 1852 and then, following monetary hardship, to the Glasgow-based blenders Bulloch, Lade and Co who renovated the buildings in 1879. Following liquidation, Distillers Company Ltd acquired Caol Ila and the distillery was subsequently transferred to Scottish Malt Distillers. The capacity is moderate at 3.65 million litres annually, the majority of which is used in Johnnie Walker blends. Just 5% is kept for maturation as single malt.
