Distillery Information Although the Speyside distillery was founded in 1956, it was not until 1990 that production began. The respected whisky maker George Christie purchased land near Kingussie and founded a grain distillery in 1957. In 1962, he commenced the building of a malt whisky distillery on the site and the work was completed in 1987. The new distillery sits opposite the site of the old Drumguish distillery, which closed in 1911. Speyside is rather artisanal in terms of scale; with a capacity of a mere 600,000 litres annually and a small workforce of just four under the management of Andrew Shand. Most of this is bottled as The Speyside, although bottlings are also released under the names Glentromie and Drumguish respectively. The company’s Glasgow base also produces Yokozuna, Mongolia’s best selling blended Scotch. The distillery sits to the east of Kingussie on the banks of the river Tromie and the Speyside distillery can lay claim to being the closest to the River Spey’s headwaters.

This 18-year American light whiskey is part of the category where whiskey is distilled at a higher proof than traditional bourbon and aged in used or refill barrels, resulting in a smoother, lighter oak impact over long maturation. The brand does not operate its own distillery, instead working with contract and sourced stocks to create blended and single-barrel releases. Its focus is on accessible, well-aged American whiskey with a balance of softness, sweetness, and barrel-driven complexity.

Jack Daniel's Distillery Series Straight Tennessee Whiskey Finished in Oloroso Sherry Casks #012 375ML Tasting Notes Nose It has very pleasant and lovely aromas. Palate On the palate it is very elegant, rich and full-bodied. Finish The finish is surprisingly long and warming. Distillery Information Jack Daniel's is the highest-selling American whiskey brand in the world. The iconic black label whiskey meets the regulations to be labeled as a straight Bourbon, but is sold simply as a Tennessee whiskey. Jack Daniel's has been owned by the Brown-Forman Corporation since 1956. Quite when the company was founded by the eponymous Jack Daniel is a matter for debate, and in fact many of the details surrounding Daniel himself are relatively murky. Although the label suggests 1866 as a start date, official records cited by Daniel's biographer suggest the year was 1875. The "Old No.7" branding is said to refer to the original federal government registration of the distillery, which was number seven in District Four. In the early 20th Century, Jack Daniel's was struggling against the local temperance movement, and gained a major boost in markets further afield in 1904 when it won a gold medal at the St. Louis World's Fair. In 1909, Tennessee was made a dry state, and the company moved to St. Louis until a deal was brokered allowing whiskey production in Tennessee to be sold in other states. Moore County, Lynchburg, where the distillery is located, is still a dry area. Therefore it is not actually possible to purchase Jack Daniel's at local stores and restaurants.

The Speysider rested for 11 years in an Amontillado sherry cask until May 2022, when it was bottled at 52.5% ABV in a release of 351 bottles. Tomintoul 11 Year Old 2010 (cask 11124) - Monologue (Chapter 7) 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Coffee and walnut cake, black pepper, cut grass, and toffee apple, with subtle flinty undertones. Palate: Caramelised nuts, cigar box, plum sauce, and salted fudge. Finish: Fiery ginger, creamy vanilla, and green apple. Distillery Information Tomintoul (pronounced ‘tom-in-TOWEL’) was built in 1964, under the ownership of Hay & Macleod and W & S Strong, in the village of the same name, which itself is one of Scotland’s highest, at an altitude of 345m (1132 feet). Drawing its water from the Ballantruan Spring, the whisky distillery sits in rugged terrain; jagged undulations surround and are specked with many a wooded clump. It is said the purity of the spring and the clean air at such an altitude contribute to the smooth, easy-drinking single malt of Tomintoul; indeed, they market their Scotch as ‘the easy drinking dram’. The distillery is rather large with a capacity of 3.3 million litres per annum. Tomintoul runs at maximum capacity, with a seven day working week and boasts a healthy storage capacity; its four warehouses can hold 75,000 casks. In 1974, the first official bottling was launched in the form of Tomintoul twelve year-old. Two weeks a year, a heavily peated malt with 55ppm is used for mashing, for the peated bottlings in Tomintoul’s range. Currently under Angus Dundee ownership, Tomintoul whisky distillery was acquired from Whyte and Mackay in 2000. It would seem Tomintoul has come of age of late with a surge of recent releases, including the 1976 vintage, bottled in 2008.

Size: 700ML Proof: 92 (46%ABV) Origin: Scotland Distillery: Old Pulteney What we've got here is a whisky from a collection of four limited edition whiskies called The Coastal Series. Old Pultney was inspired by coasts around the world that, like the North Sea air at Pulteney, affect how liquids age and kicks things off with Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes, a new territory for the brand thanks to the use of casks that carry echoes of the sweet aperitif native to the Charente-Maritime region. Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes - Coastal Series 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Acacia honey, white pepper, and creamy vanilla with orange peel and dried fruit in support. Palate: Hazelnut whip, nutmeg, oak char, salted caramel, and red apples. Finish: Coastal elements linger with baking spice and toffee sweetness. Distillery Information During the nineteenth century, the town of Wick was the herring fishing capital of Europe and as many as 1,000 boats used the port. Indeed, Pulteneytown, the area of Wick south of the river, was built for this purpose in 1810 by its namesake, Sir William Pulteney. The Pulteney distillery itself was founded by James Hendersen in 1826. Lying close to the coast to the south of Wick, the distillery was only accessible by sea and to this day remains Scotland’s northernmost mainland distillery. The whisky was exported on boats and barley was shipped in and its maritime traditions were such that distillery workers also moonlighted as fishermen. Pulteney operated under Buchanan-Dewar, who became part of Distillers Company Limited in 1925. Five years later the stills of Pulteney fell silent. It was not before two decades had passed, that production restarted, following Robert Cumming’s acquisition in 1951. Allied Breweries purchased the distillery along with parent company James & George Stodart Ltd in 1961. Following the acquisition of Pedro Domecq, Allied sold the Pulteney whisky distillery to Inver House Distillers who remain the owners, though since 2006 they have been under Thai Beverage control. The distillery is relatively small with a capacity of just one million litres annually. Single malt whisky is bottled under the name Old Pulteney and there have been both official and independent releases over the years.

Old Carter Barrel Strength Straight American Whiskey Batch 11 134.6 Proof Tasting Notes Nose: Rich with warm baking spice, buttery toffee, and creamy caramel. Palate: The palate is very powerful and complex. Smooth texture. Finish: Perfect, long lasting finish. Distillery Information Old Carter Whiskey Co. is a small batch whiskey brand out of Kentucky. Its founders, Mark and Sherri Carter, have viticultural roots in Napa Valley. However, their love for crafting fine wines expanded into the whiskey industry. They’ve created relationships with distillers throughout Kentucky and Tennessee and perfected their process. The first batch was released in March 2018, and just 1,269 bottles were made. Subsequent batches are equally small, allowing for the attention to detail the couple values in their products. Old Carter Whiskey Co. is a passion project for the couple. Sherri even labels the bottles by hand. Each batch is carefully crafted and tasted, with new releases every few months. Consumers can sip on Straight Rye Whiskey, Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 12 Year Straight American Whiskey, 27 Year Straight American Whiskey and Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. No two batches are exactly the same, though the labels all depict a picture of a workhorse — originally etched by Sherri Carter herself. Today, Old Carter Whiskey Co. can still be difficult to track down due to its limited quantities and reach. As of Spring 2021, only Kentucky, California, DC, New York, New Jersey, Georgia and Louisiana carried the desirable brand. Prices range from $150 to over $500 per bottle, but the cost stands up to the hype. Well-balanced, sweet and a little spicy, Old Carter Whiskey Co. has already assembled a following of devoted drinkers.

The distillery has quite a small annual capacity of just one million litres and runs at but three quarters of this. In 1930, the distillery closed and was used as a power plant. It was not the only time Tobermory had been used for purposes other than whisky distillation; in 1982 the buildings were leased to a dairy company who used them for storing cheese. Tobermory is currently under Burn Stewart ownership following the acquisition of both the distillery and a good stock of whisky for £800,000. The malted barley is shipped from the Port Ellen maltings at the South-East of Islay, also home to a more recent experiment whereby some casks are sent for maturation on the island, these are bottled as Ledaig. There is now just one official bottling in production; a ten year-old. There have also been independent bottlings and although popularity has been weaning, under the management of Alan McConnochie of Bunnahabhain fame, there is expected to be a resurgence.
