Dubbed ‘The Flames of the Phoenix', it was designed to be the most phenolic Lagavulin yet. Fans of the distillery will know that means a truly peaty customer, with lots of spice and power amplified by the virgin oak casks this heavily peated Lagavulin was aged in, alongside American oak refill casks. Palate: Positively crackles with black pepper, sweet toffee, and smoky wood. Finish: Big chilli peppers balanced with caramel. Distillery Information Lagavulin is one of a trio of distilleries sat on the south coast of Islay. Lagavulin produces some of the smokiest whisky Scotland has to offer, with the Lagavulin 16 Year Old standing as their most storied expression. Located on the shores of the Lagavulin Bay, the Lagavulin distillery is home to two pairs of stills. Lagavulin has a long distillation time, and many believe this imparts the intense richness of the famous single malt whisky. John Johnston founded the Lagavulin distillery in 1816, though there had been as many as ten illicit distilleries in the area since 1742. Lagavulin was home to legal distilling under Johnston’s eye, however. Shortly after it opened, a distillery named Ardmore was opened close by, though this became part of Lagavulin a few decades later. In 1836, John Johnston died and Lagavulin was bought by Alexander Graham, a spirits merchant from Glasgow. 25 years later, the distillery came under the ownership of James Mackie, who brought in his nephew Peter Mackie to work at Lagavulin shortly afterwards. During his time at the Lagavulin distillery, Peter Mackie became well known for working incredibly hard indeed, earning the nickname Restless Peter. Mackie founded the Malt Mill distillery in disused Lagavulin buildings in 1908, though it closed in 1962. However, its legacy lives on throughout Lagavulin. The buildings now house the Lagavulin visitor centre, the stills have been incorporated into Lagavulin’s distilling equipment and a sample of Malt Mill whisky is kept at Lagavulin. Lagavulin decommissioned their own floor maltings in 1974 and they began to get their malt from Port Ellen.

However, it wasn’t until 2006 that the Walsh’s began to venture head-on into the world of whisky, when they signed a long-term supply agreement with Irish Distillers – the Whiskey Supply Agreement - allowing for the distilling and laying down of Irish whiskey stock to its specifications. This facilitated the 2007 launch of The Irishman Whiskey, the first singular whiskey released by Walsh, which was followed in 2009 by Writers Tears.

Distillery Information Glen Scotia is one of just three distilleries in Campbeltown producing single malt at the moment (along with Springbank and Glengyle). The distillery draws its cooling waters from the Crosshill Loch and two bore holes, drilled over twenty metres into the rock below. Campbeltown was the capital of Scotch whisky production before the US Prohibition was enacted. There were some twenty-eight distilleies, though after the act was passed only three survived. Glen Scotia was acquired by West Highland Malt Distillers in 1919 and five years later the company went bankrupt. Duncan MacCallum, a director, purchased the company. The distillery was closed again in 1928 and a couple of years later, following great financial trouble, Duncan MacCallum threw himself into the very loch from which the Glen Scotia distillery draws its water. It is said that his ghost haunts the distillery. Glen Scotia survived the Second World War, having restarted production in 1933 after the repeal of Prohibition. In 1954, Hiram Walker acquired the distillery and shortly after it was purchased by A Gillies and Co. In 1979, £1 million was spent on reconstruction which lasted until 1982 and two years later the distillery closed once more. Glen Scotia was acquired by Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse Ltd and in 2000 Loch Lomond distillery took over, providing staff and running the operations. Today, the Glen Scotia produces 100,000 litres annually - substantially lower than its three quarter million capacity. The distillery now has a staff of just two; James Grogan, the long time stillman, and Hector Gatt of...

Fermentation times range from 70-92 hours in the four stainless steel washbacks and the distillery has a single 1.1 tonne semi-lauter mash tun. Both unpeated and peated spirits are produced and filled into a combination of ex-bourbon hogsheads and quarter casks as well as ex-Oloroso Sherry casks (roughly a third going into each). Bladnoch 19 Year Old (2022 Release) 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Dried apricots, blackcurrant jam, and warming nutmeg emerge from delicate floral notes. Palate: Dark liquorice sticks, red berries, peppery oak, and Manuka honey combine in a rich, thick palate. Finish: Very long and a little drying. Distillery Information Bladnoch distillery sits resolute in the green pastures of Wigtownshire. The Southernmost distillery in Scotland, the Bladnoch distillery takes its water from its namesake - the River Bladnoch - which rises at Loch Maberry in Kirkcowan. The distillery was established in 1817 by the brothers McClelland: John and Thomas, who licensed it in 1825. Part of a farm, Bladnoch utilized the rich barley from the surrounding fields. The buildings were refurbished during the latter part of the nineteenth century, though in 1905 distillation ceased totally. Ownership changed hands several times, from the Irish Dunville and Co and then to A B Grant, who began distillation once more. For a time, fortunes were highly favourable and, a decade after reopening, the stills were doubled to number four. During the 1980s, Bladnoch was under Guinness ownership and then United Distillers, closing officially in June of 1993. Diageo sold the distillery to Raymond Armstrong in 2003. Raymond had originally intended to use it as a holiday home and it was sold strictly for this purpose alone. However, after petitioning from both Raymond Armstrong and the local townsfolk, Diageo allowed production once more, though it may not exceed 100,000 litres per annum. There have been many independent bottlings over the years, from bottlers such as Gordon and MacPhail and Douglas Laing. Having restarted production at the turn of the millennium the first official post-Armstrong bottlings were released in 2008 in the shape of three six year olds; one bourbon and one sherry matured offering, as well as a lightly peated expression, all of which have all been well-received.

The whisky matured in a fourth-fill butt, with an outturn of only 582 bottles at 55.4% ABV. Glenfarclas 1996 (cask 852) - Family Cask Summer 2022 Release 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: It has very pleasant and lovely aromas. Palate: On the palate it is very elegant, rich and full-bodied. Finish: Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Distillery Information The Glenfarclas whisky distillery draws its water from pure springs on the rugged Ben Rinnes mountain range, which looms omnipresent in the distant reaches. The distillery sits in the moors of Banffshire, just a mile from the River Spey. Glenfarclas has always been, and it seems will remain to be, one of Scotland's only family run distilleries. Accordingly, there is a strong degree of independence. Prized by connoisseurs, the single malt whiskies of Glenfarclas are matured almost solely in sherry butts and are aged in the substantial onsite warehousing facilities; the 28 warehouses hold 52,000 casks. One of the few Scotch makers never to use exotic woods for maturation, Glenfarclas retains its integrity. The distillery was first founded in 1836 by Robert Hay. However, there is some evidence that there was a distillery on the site over a century prior. Following Robert’s death in 1865, John and George Grant acquired the distillery for '511 pounds and 19 shillings'. They leased it to the Glenlivet’s John Smith. John Smith chose to pursue his newly founded Cragganmore distillery instead and in 1870 Messrs Grant ran Glenfarclas once more. In 2017, a Glenfarclas 30 year old was released to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the ‘Final Fantasy’ game which was first launched in 1987, the same year the whisky was distilled.

The Irishman 12 Year Old (2022 Release) 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Honeycomb and toffee ice cream, with a sprinkling of diced almonds. A hint of toasted brioche, too. Palate: Roasted nuts, spiced walnut loaf, a little bit of milky coffee, diced apricots and juicy peaches. Finish: Lasting sweetness of caramel, with a crackle of cassia in the background. Distillery Information Bernard and Rosemary Walsh created the Hot Irishman Limited in 1999, with the desire to blend and bottle the perfect Irish Coffee recipe. Expanding upon its success, in 2005 the couple attempted to rival the big Irish cream liqueur brands by creating a recipe that brought things back to basics, with The Irishman Irish Cream liqueur, made using 100% Irish dairy cream and premium Irish whiskey.
