The Linkwood distillery was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown and rebuilt fifty-one years later following William Brown’s inheritance of the distillery in 1868. Distillery Information Tullibardine whisky distillery was founded in 1949 on the site of an old brewery, one which was said to have brewed ale for King James IV’s coronation back in 1488! The brewery itself dated back to the 12th century so it's fair to say that the site has had an incredibly long brewing and distilling history. Named for Tullibardine Moor, the distillery draws its water from the Danny Burn and lies to the south-west of Blackford. The area is renowned for the purity of its water, indeed Highland Spring is bottled locally. Queen Helen, the wife of King Magnus of Alba, drowned in a ford after falling from her horse not far from the town and Blackford was named accordingly. Following purchase by Invergordon in 1971, Tullibardine’s stills capacity was increased from two to four. Two decades later, Invergordon was acquired by Whyte and Mackay and a year later the whisky distillery was shut down. In December of 2003, the distillery was put back into production following the June acquisition of Tullibardine for the sum of £1.1 million. A year later a Café and Shop were opened at the Tullibardine distillery, which today has a capacity of 2.5 million litres per annum.

A coastal distillery in the Western Highlands, Ben Nevis draws its water from the Allt a’Mhuilinn which originates from two pools, Coire Leis and Coire na’Ciste, which are both sited a good way up the mountain. The distillery was founded in 1825, by the gloriously named ‘Long John’ MacDonald, for whom the renowned Long John blended Scotch was named. After Long John’s death in 1856, ownership was passed down to Donald McDonald, his son. A second distillery was sited nearby in 1878 and named Nevis Distillery. In a bid to keep up with growing demand, both distilleries eventually became one in the early twentieth century. The distillery joined the ranks of those experimenting with continuous distillation, installing a Coffey still in 1955 which remained on the site for twenty-six years. The famed Japanese company Nikka acquired the distillery in 1989 and subsequently the quality was markedly improved. The heart of the range has been, for some time, the ten year-old. There have also been a few cask-finishes, limited editions and independent bottlings, notably from Blackadder and Douglas Laing. The Ardbeg distillery produces some of the finest single malt whisky around and has been doing so for centuries. The Ardbeg distillery is located on the island of Islay, off the coast of Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1815 by John McDougall and has been in operation ever since. Ardbeg whisky is renowned for its smoky flavour, which comes from the peat that is used to smoke the barley during the whisky-making process. Ardbeg lies solitary, in a small cove off the south coast of Islay. It was once a stage for illegal distillation when smugglers took advantage of the remote location and exceptional conditions for whisky production. Eventually, excise men seized the original, illegitimate buildings from the smugglers and destroyed them. It was not until 1815 that a legal distillery was established and founded by John McDougall. Sitting nearby leviathan distilleries; Laphroaig and Lagavulin, Ardbeg has always produced a very sought-after single malt, despite Ardbeg's production scale being less than half that of its neighbours. Ardbeg ran into some financial difficulties and the distillery was closed in 1981. It was not until 1989 that distillation resumed, although on a very small scale. After closing again in 1996, the owners, Allied Domecq, put the Ardbeg distillery up for sale. It was bought in 1997 by Glenmorangie Co and was, at last, restored to its former grandeur.

Distillery Information Though there is little hard evidence, Robert Haig was said to have operated the earliest whisky distillery and certainly the earliest ever referenced. It was in 1655, that he was frowned upon by church elders for using his still on the Sabbath and was summoned to appear before the Kirk Session. In 1824, one of his descendents, John Haig, built the Cameron Bridge distillery in Windygates in the Lowlands and it was one of the first distilleries to produce grain whisky. The Haig Gold blend was released around this time. John’s cousin, Robert Stein built the first continuous still. In 1877, Cameron Bridge merged with five whisky companies, forming Distillers Company Ltd and John Haig was one of the directors. In 1919, John Haig & Co was purchased by Distillers Company Ltd. During the early 1990s, £9 million was spent on renovating the distillery and it reopened in 2000. Cameron Bridge is, today, a decidedly colossal distillery with a capacity of over 30 million litres annually. A single grain whisky is released from the distillery and bottled as Cameron Brig. There have been both independent releases as well as the official bottling. Today, Cameron Bridge is set for gin production following the closure of Gordon’s gin distillery in Essex. The Haig brand lives on today with the Dimple range of blended whiskies. Remember the motto, ‘don’t be vague, ask for Haig!’.

Using water from the Guillielands Burn for cooling and power and from Middleby Burn for the whisky, the Lowland site functioned for nearly a century, once capable of making 28,000 gallons of spirit annually and even passing through the hands of John Walker & Sons before whisky making ceased in the early 1920s. That’s how things remained until 2007 when Annandale caught the eye of a husband-and-wife/business partner team.
