Campbeltown was the capital of Scotch whisky production before the US Prohibition was enacted. There were some twenty-eight distilleies, though after the act was passed only three survived. Glen Scotia was acquired by West Highland Malt Distillers in 1919 and five years later the company went bankrupt. Duncan MacCallum, a director, purchased the company. The distillery was closed again in 1928 and a couple of years later, following great financial trouble, Duncan MacCallum threw himself into the very loch from which the Glen Scotia distillery draws its water. It is said that his ghost haunts the distillery. Glen Scotia survived the Second World War, having restarted production in 1933 after the repeal of Prohibition. In 1954, Hiram Walker acquired the distillery and shortly after it was purchased by A Gillies and Co. In 1979, £1 million was spent on reconstruction which lasted until 1982 and two years later the distillery closed once more. After he purchased the brand in 1899, he spent his reign investing, innovating, and merrily making booze. Until he headed into the double trouble of war and Prohibition. A familiar roadblock for many, Peerless eventually succumbed and when the last barrel was sold, it went dormant. The second chapter began in 2014, when Kraver’s great-grandson, Corky Taylor, and his son Carson, revived the project. The Taylors constructed a distillery in an abandoned 115-year-old tobacco warehouse in the Bourbon District of downtown Louisville and even got special dispensation to restore Peerless’ old DSP number, KY 50. The team has been producing the good stuff since 2015 and in 2017, a two-year-old rye whiskey became the first whiskey made at a distillery named Peerless for nearly a century. Now, Peerless Rye and Peerless Bourbon make up the core range. The distillery has strong beliefs on how to make bourbon, such as using sweet mash fermentation rather than the industry standard sour mash. This involves adding a portion of a prior fermentation batch into the next run. There’s no recycled stillage, just fresh grains and water filling the brand’s six fermentation tanks, creating sweet, floral and citrus notes in long, controlled runs of five to six days in order to retain more flavour. Finish: Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Distillery Information Tanduay traces its origins to a distillery in Hagonoy, Bulacan originally owned by Elías Menchatorre. In 1856, the distillery was acquired by Valentin Teus e Yrisarry and brought into Ynchausti y Compañía, a prominent Philippine multi-national conglomerate led by the Ynchausti family. Although the Hagonoy distillery was already in operation at the time of the acquisition, Ynchausti y Compañia decided to use its own foundation date (1854) as the distillery's foundation date. Six years later, a rectifying plant was constructed in Isla de Tanduay, bordering the Quiapo and San Miguel districts of Manila, becoming the original Tanduay distillery. To this day, the Ynchausti family crest can still be seen on every bottle of Tanduay. There are no records of the product names produced by these two distilleries and it can be assumed that all alcoholic products of the period were sold without brand names or distinctive labels and were referred to by their generic names: "aguardiente" (Spanish for firewater), "tubâ" (palm wine) and "ron" (Spanish for rum). However, earliest records of the distillery list its rum simply as "ron de destillería de Hagonoy y Tanduay" (literally, “rum from the distillery of Hagonoy and Tanduay”). By the 1900s, production would shift to the Manila distillery. By the 1930s, the rum it produced became branded as Tanduay Rhum and its packaging was changed from the 10 gallons dama juana container to the smaller (375 ml, 750 ml) glass bottles.
