It was the first distillery to attain such an accolade and the spirit was heralded accordingly as the ‘King’s own whisky’. Lying in blissful serenity in the Highlands, not far South of the town of Nairn, Brackla's life blood is the pure waters of the Cawdor Burn. Its capacity today is large at some 3.9 million litres and all of this, save for a few thousand casks, is used in Dewar’s blended products. The distillery was founded in 1812, by Captain William Fraser and it was not until 1919 that it parted from Fraser-family hands, after it was acquired by the Aberdeen-based James Leict and John Mitchell. Brackla ran in-house maltings for some time, though they were closed in 1966. Four years later the still capacity was increased with the addition of two further stills. Royal Brackla is currently under John Dewar and Sons ownership - Dewars was acquired by Bacardi in 1998, ending Diageo tenure, save for the warehousing which the drinks giant still rent as part of a long time lease. Accordingly Royal Brackla spirit is matured elsewhere. An official ten year-old was released in 2004 and there have been several independent bottlings throughout the years.

Named for Tullibardine Moor, the distillery draws its water from the Danny Burn and lies to the south-west of Blackford. The area is renowned for the purity of its water, indeed Highland Spring is bottled locally. Queen Helen, the wife of King Magnus of Alba, drowned in a ford after falling from her horse not far from the town and Blackford was named accordingly. Following purchase by Invergordon in 1971, Tullibardine’s stills capacity was increased from two to four. Two decades later, Invergordon was acquired by Whyte and Mackay and a year later the whisky distillery was shut down. In December of 2003, the distillery was put back into production following the June acquisition of Tullibardine for the sum of £1.1 million. A year later a Café and Shop were opened at the Tullibardine distillery, which today has a capacity of 2.5 million litres per annum.

Built with the intent of ensuring a steady supply of whisky for Chivas’ blended products, the distillery’s unusual name derives from the Gaelic, ‘Allt a’bhainne’ meaning ‘burn of milk’. The distillery lies on the southern slopes of the rugged mountain range, Ben Rinnes and draws its water from a spring amongst the lofty peaks. Closed in 2002, due to saturation in the whisky market, the distillery was reopened in May of 2005 due to an increased demand for the blend Chivas Regal, Allt-á-Bhainne being a chief component. Today, the distillery has capacity of 4.5 million litres per annum.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Aroma is very pleasant and delightful. Palate: Balanced and rich flavors. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information The Glentauchers whisky distillery was founded in 1897 by W P Lowrie, a Glasgow-based whisky trader, and James Buchanan, a renowned blender. Five years later, Lowrie experienced financial hardship and James Buchanan subsequently bought him out. The distillery was built at Tauchers Farm, four miles west of the town of Keith. The location was chosen for its proximity to a rail line and main road. Indeed, the Glentauchers distillery boasts its own railway siding. The distillery was designed by a Keith-based architect, John Alcock, and the construction was directed by the famed Charles Doig, an Elgin-based architect who was instrumental in the design of many Scotch distilleries. James Buchanan merged with Dewars in 1915 and during the 1920s the distillery went through considerable renovations. This included the rebuilding of the mash house and floor maltings. The newly formed Buchanan-Dewars merged with Distillers Company Limited in 1925 and five years later the distillery was transferred to Scottish Malt Distillers. During the 1960s, further stills were installed, bringing the total capacity to 3.4 million litres per annum.

Size: 700ML Proof: 103.4 (51.7%ABV) Origin: Scotland Distillery: Speyside A single malt Scotch whisky distilled in 1995 at the Speyside Distillery and aged for 29 years in a refill sherry butt before Thompson Bros. filled 488 bottles at 51.7% ABV without chill-filtration or additional colouring. Speyside 29 Year Old 1995 (Thompson Bros.) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Plum and wild strawberry, cinnamon, nutmeg, tomato leaves, umeshu, maple wood, dried red berries, pink grapefruit! Delightfully (surprisingly?) tropical, with green mangos coming out. Blood orange and a little bit of rubber. Palate: Cranberry, fruit cake, those giant strawberries that you get in pick and mixes. Pink grapefruit again. There’s that earthy, woody, funky note that only really comes from a long time in refill sherry. Mushrooms that have been covered in brown miso paste. Finish: Quite long. Some nice sherry spice at the end, maybe even something a little Christmassy. Distillery Information Although the Speyside distillery was founded in 1956, it was not until 1990 that production began. The respected whisky maker George Christie purchased land near Kingussie and founded a grain distillery in 1957. In 1962, he commenced the building of a malt whisky distillery on the site and the work was completed in 1987. The new distillery sits opposite the site of the old Drumguish distillery, which closed in 1911. Speyside is rather artisanal in terms of scale; with a capacity of a mere 600,000 litres annually and a small workforce of just four under the management of Andrew Shand. Most of this is bottled as The Speyside, although bottlings are also released under the names Glentromie and Drumguish respectively. The company’s Glasgow base also produces Yokozuna, Mongolia’s best selling blended Scotch. The distillery sits to the east of Kingussie on the banks of the river Tromie and the Speyside distillery can lay claim to being the closest to the River Spey’s headwaters.

Enjoy it neat or on the rocks for an unforgettable experience. Glen Garioch 27 Year Old 1998 (Thompson Bros.) Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Impressive and charming nose. Palate: Balanced and rich flavors. Finish: Elegant long-lasting aftertaste. Distillery Information The Glen Garioch distillery may well be Scotland's first licensed distillery. Varying dates are given as to the founding of the distillery, but all are predated by an article in the Aberdeen Journal on the 1st December 1785, which announced the first distillation of spirit at the site. Glen Garioch (pronounced ‘Glen Geery’) lies at the village of Old Meldrum in Aberdeenshire. The distillery buildings sit huddled on a little outcrop flecked with heather gorse and grasses and surrounded by barley pastures - it is said that some of the best barley in Scotland is to be found there. Having changed hands many times over the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Glen Garioch distillery was shut down in 1968. Stanley P Morrison acquired the distillery two years later. In 1973, following extensive renovations, production resumed. The whisky produced was much more reminiscent of traditional Highland single malts, this was due in part to the floor maltings at the distillery and the malt maker’s schooling on Islay, where he learnt the joys of peated whiskies. At a time when the Islay malt whiskies were very fashionable, Glen Garioch’s new, robust character did much for the fortunes of the distillery. The floor maltings were decommissioned in 1979, though recently there has been much talk of using them once more. Today, the distillery is under the Japanese Suntory ownership, after they acquired Morrison Bowmore in 1994. Glen Garioch currently runs at three quarters of capacity, producing around 700,000 litres per annum and selling roughly one third of this yearly, much being exported for the Asian market. There are several house bottlings, as well as a few exotic finishes and a handful of independent expressions.

Distillery Information Benriach Distillery was founded in 1898 by John Duff. Following monetary difficulties the distillery was sold to the Longmorn Distilleries Company, who closed it at the turn of the twentieth century. Benriach, named for the Gaelic for ‘speckled mountain’, saw an upturn in fortunes in the 1960s, however, and from 1965 onwards was run by new owners The Glenlivet Distillers. Seagrams purchased the distillery in 1978, then in 1985 two extra stills were added bringing the total to four. When Pernod Ricard took over Seagram’s whisky division in 2001 Benriach was mothballed, but in April of 2004, Benriach was sold, along with several thousand casks, for £5.4million to the South African company, Infra Trading, combining their efforts with Burn Stewart director Billy Walker. They reopened the distillery the following year and soon established the Benriach Distilling Co. In 2008, the Benriach Distilling Co acquired a second distillery from Chivas Brothers in the shape of GlenDronach, before adding Glenglassaugh Distillery to its portfolio in 2013.

Palate: Smoked almonds, sticky dates, Seville orange, earthy peat, chocolate raisins, and pepper. Finish: Dry, nutty and lightly smoky with lingering citrus. Distillery Information Highland Park is Scotland’s northernmost whisky distillery, lying just to the North-east of fellow Orcadian, Scapa. Orkney is a rugged, beautiful island and the Highland Park distillery sits on a hillside near Kirkwall. Not far off, are sweeping plains of barley field and the rocky outcrops which protrude ominously from the ground. The sea beats the coast; her salty air and the island’s geology contribute to the rich character of Highland Park single malts. The distillery draws its water from the mineral rich springs to the east of the distillery as well as the Crantit Spring. Highland Park was founded in 1798, by David Robertson on what was once the site of Magnus Eunson's cottage. Eunson was not only a beadle at the local church but also a notorious smuggler. Highland Park was officially licensed in 1826. After James Borwick inherited the distillery in 1869, the production at Highland Park was slowed; James was a priest and believed that whisky production contradicted with his religious status. Accordingly, in 1876 Stuart and Mackay moved in and dramatically helped sales through overseas exportation.
