Benrinnes 10 Year Old 2012 (cask 310545) - Cask Strength Collection (Signatory) 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Fresh baking with notes of doughy bread and fruited sponge cake mingle with floral blossom and creamy barley. Distillery Information The original Benrinnes was sited almost a mile south-east of today’s distillery. Built on the Whitehouse Farm in 1826 by Peter McKenzie, the distillery was completely destroyed just three years later, after a great flood laid waste to the buildings. In 1835, a new distillery was built, sited on the side of its namesake, the 840m peak which looms over Speyside. Alongside four other distilleries, Benrinnes draws its water from springs on the mountain, tapping the Rowantree and Scurran Burns. Following a devastating fire at the end of the nineteenth century, BenRinnes was rebuilt, converting to electric power. The distillery has an unusual distillation method; the six stills are used to partially triple-distil the make. Benrinnes made use of a Saladin Box maltings system from 1964. In 1984, it was decommissioned and malt was bought in instead. Despite the long history of Benrinnes, there has only been one official bottling - in 1991 a fifteen year-old was released. Save for a few independent bottlings, the majority of the spirit has been used in blends, notably Johnnie Walker and J&B. Today, single malt whiskies from Benrinnes remain a rare treat. The distillery is currently under Diageo ownership.

Palate: More ripe orchard fruit, with a touch of nettle tea, followed by singed spices. Finish: Loads of vanilla and apple on the finish. Distillery Information The Linkwood distillery sits in Elgin, drawing its water from the springs of Millbuies Loch. Next to the distillery is a large and rather beautiful reservoir which plays host to a variety of local wildlife including ducks and swans, the latter can be seen gracing the label of the twelve year-old bottling. Linkwood is home to two stillhouses, Linkwood A, which is currently not in use, houses the two original stills and Linkwood B, in which a further four stills operate. The distillery has a capacity of 2.24 million litres per annum and the majority of the whisky produced is used for blending, notably in Johnnie Walker. Thanks to Diageo there have been, of late, several single malt whiskies released from Linkwood. In 2008, three twenty-six year-olds were launched, notable for their 50cl bottles and having spent the last fourteen years of their maturation in either rum, red wine or port casks. There have been quite a number of independent bottlings in recent times, joining a few special editions and the Flora and Fauna twelve year-old. The Linkwood distillery was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown and rebuilt fifty-one years later following William Brown’s inheritance of the distillery in 1868. Built on the Whitehouse Farm in 1826 by Peter McKenzie, the distillery was completely destroyed just three years later, after a great flood laid waste to the buildings. In 1835, a new distillery was built, sited on the side of its namesake, the 840m peak which looms over Speyside. Alongside four other distilleries, Benrinnes draws its water from springs on the mountain, tapping the Rowantree and Scurran Burns. Following a devastating fire at the end of the nineteenth century, BenRinnes was rebuilt, converting to electric power. The distillery has an unusual distillation method; the six stills are used to partially triple-distil the make. Benrinnes made use of a Saladin Box maltings system from 1964. In 1984, it was decommissioned and malt was bought in instead. Despite the long history of Benrinnes, there has only been one official bottling - in 1991 a fifteen year-old was released. Save for a few independent bottlings, the majority of the spirit has been used in blends, notably Johnnie Walker and J&B. Today, single malt whiskies from Benrinnes remain a rare treat. Distillery Information Tomintoul (pronounced ‘tom-in-TOWEL’) was built in 1964, under the ownership of Hay & Macleod and W & S Strong, in the village of the same name, which itself is one of Scotland’s highest, at an altitude of 345m (1132 feet). Drawing its water from the Ballantruan Spring, the whisky distillery sits in rugged terrain; jagged undulations surround and are specked with many a wooded clump. It is said the purity of the spring and the clean air at such an altitude contribute to the smooth, easy-drinking single malt of Tomintoul; indeed, they market their Scotch as ‘the easy drinking dram’. The distillery is rather large with a capacity of 3.3 million litres per annum. Tomintoul runs at maximum capacity, with a seven day working week and boasts a healthy storage capacity; its four warehouses can hold 75,000 casks. In 1974, the first official bottling was launched in the form of Tomintoul twelve year-old. Two weeks a year, a heavily peated malt with 55ppm is used for mashing, for the peated bottlings in Tomintoul’s range. Currently under Angus Dundee ownership, Tomintoul whisky distillery was acquired from Whyte and Mackay in 2000. It would seem Tomintoul has come of age of late with a surge of recent releases, including the 1976 vintage, bottled in 2008.

Distillery Information Starting life as a small site with two stills, the number has since doubled. Its style also appears to have shifted on at least two occasions from the overtly fruity manifestations of its earliest guise to a more cereal-accented make in recent years. A peated variant, bottled as Old Ballantruan, is also now part of the portfolio. Its growing presence in the malt category will hopefully convince more people of its undoubted quality.
