Distillery Information Bunnahabhain (meaning "mouth of the river" in Gaelic) is a whisky distillery located on the remote island of Islay just off the west coast of Scotland. The brand dates back to 1881 when William Robertson (of wine and spirits brokers Robertson & Baxter) co-founded the distillery with the Greenlees brothers (also well known in the whisky business at the time). From conception in 2009, it took five years for the idea to be formed into a full operational whisky distillery, though it was no easy journey. A former golf caddie, Clement realised there was no nearby whisky distillery for the course’s visitors to go and see. So, he decided on a derelict farm building for his site, based just a few miles from St Andrews. Initially, £100,000 was raised from 32 investors, and many of these where golfers Clement knew. He spent another two years fundraising, as well as a Scottish government grant of £670,000, though he still fell short of the amount of money needed to actually build the distillery. However, help came in the form of the Wemyss family, who have a historical link with the site Clement chose and also own Wemyss Malts. So, in 2013, Clement sold the business to the Wemyss family, though he remained as director. Within 18 months of selling, the distillery was finally up and running, first opening to the public in December 2014.

Blanton, who the company claims spent most of his life preserving the tradition of handcrafted bourbon. Blanton worked at the facility now known as the Buffalo Trace Distillery for approximately 55 years. He was born and raised on a farm just outside Frankfort, Kentucky, and he began working at the distillery (then called the O.F.C. Distillery) in 1897 as an office boy when he was 16 years old. Over the next few years he reportedly worked in every department, and in 1912 he was appointed superintendent of the distillery, its warehouse, and bottling shop – at the same time that the distillery was renamed to become the George T. Stagg Distillery. He became president of the whiskey plant in 1921. Blanton died in 1959.

The brand dates back to 1881 when William Robertson (of wine and spirits brokers Robertson & Baxter) co-founded the distillery with the Greenlees brothers (also well known in the whisky business at the time). By 1883, the distillery's whisky production was in full swing and, in 1963, the increased popularity of Scotch led to the number of stills being doubled. The early 1980s saw a decline in the whisky market and the distillery was mothballed in 1982 although production resumed just two years later. In the years that followed, Bunnahabhain passed through several different owners before it was acquired by the Distell Group in 2013. None of the single malt Scotch whiskies produced by Bunnahabhain are chill-filtered (which, while often used in commercial whisky production, often removes desirable esters otherwise contributing the whisky's nose).
