Distillery Information Tamnavulin whisky distillery is found on the banks of the River Livet on the southern edge of Speyside – the world’s most famous whisky-making region. The name ‘Tamnavulin’ translates to ‘mill on the hill’ and is a reference to the ancient three-storey wool carding mi which sits on the distillery site and can be traced all the way back to 1560. The Tamnavulin whisky distillery draws its water from underground springs in the surrounding hillside and takes its cooling waters from the River Livet, whose headwaters rise in the Grampians in Moray before flowing eleven miles until their confluence with the River Avon. Tamnavulin was founded in 1966 by a subsidiary of Invergordon Distillers Ltd, the whisky distillery has changed little during its relatively short life. Tamnavulin is rather typical of 1960s-constructed distilleries and the exterior is decidedly industrial, in stark contrast to its markedly stunning locality. The Tamnavulin distillery has been under the ownership of United Spirits since its acquisition of Whyte and Mackay in 2007. The Tamnavulin whisky distillery had previously been silent for over a decade, having been mothballed in May of 1995. Under the new ownership, there has been the addition of new staff as well as increased working hours; Tamnavulin now operates seven days a week, which should bring production to near full capacity. Nine washbacks and six stills give Tamnavulin a total capacity of 4.3m litres annually, though this has yet to be reached. Distillery Information The Miltonduff distillery lies in the Glen of Pluscarden, whose barley rich pastures once played host to as many as fifty illicit stills during the 1800s. The site was once the meal mill of Pluscarden Abbey. The Benedictine Priory of Pluscarden was founded in 1236 and had been closed for some time, until 1948 when it was reopened. The Miltonduff whisky distillery was founded by Robert Bain and Andrew Peary in 1824, shortly after the Excise Act was passed. Miltonduff was named for an illicit distillery known as Milton and the suffix was added for the Duff family, who owned the land. It was following Hiram Walker Gooderham and Worts’ acquisition of George Ballantine and Son in 1935, that the need for a stable supply of Scotch malt whisky became evident. Accordingly, the Miltonduff distillery was acquired a year later and transferred subsequently to the supervision of George Ballantine. From then on, Miltonduff whisky has been an important component of Ballantine’s popular blended products. The distillery is now under Chivas Brothers ownership, following the acquisition of Allied by Chivas' parent company Pernod Ricard in 2005. The three pairs of stills have a combined total capacity of 5.5 million litres annually and in 1964 two Lomond stills were installed. It is in these stills that Mosstowie, a rare single malt, is distilled. There has been an officially released bottling, though it is no longer produced. There have been, however, a handful of independent releases.

The Penderyn distillery is located in the Brecon Beacons National Park, in the historic village of Penderyn. It's whisky is made using the traditional pot still method, and is matured in ex-bourbon barrels. Penderyn also produces a peated single malt whisky, which is matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in Islay peated whisky barrels. Penderyn has won numerous awards for its whiskies, including Gold medals at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, and the World Whisky Awards. There is some evidence that the Welsh practised distillation as early as the fourth century. Allegedly, Reaullt Hir distilled on Bardsey Island around this time. The early drink was distilled from barley, yeast and honey. The Welsh Whisky Company was founded in 1998 and the first spirit ran from the stills of the Penderyn Distillery in September of 2000. The locality is rather beautiful, sitting in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The first whisky was launched on St David’s Day, 1st March 2004. The wash is brought in from S A Brain & Co, a beer brewer. The standard bottling is matured in Evan Williams and Jack Daniel’s whiskey casks and finished in Madeira casks. There have been more recent releases, a Sherry Wood and a peated offering. In June of 2008 a visitor centre was opened by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. The distillery also produces a liqueur, vodka and gin. Penderyn continues to grow. In 2014, an expansion to the distillery was put in motion, with a pair of pot stills, a copper pot still and mashing facilities being commissioned. Two new distilleries are opening soon, one in the north and one in Swansea in the south, and it has begun to make serious inroads into the export market – having recently gone into China, Japan, Russia and the US.

Distillery Information Blackwood distillery was a Scottish distiller founded in July 2002 with the aim of building Shetland's first Scotch whisky distillery run by Caroline Whitfield. In May 2008, the company went into administration, but a new company, Catfirth Ltd, was established to continue the whisky business and took over the remaining stocks of whisky. The stocks of the vodka and gin brands were sold to a company called Blavod Extreme Spirits. In 2013, word of further funding came through, with a promise that a distillery will open soon after but by 2015 that had not happened.
