[First Edition] Der Herr der Ringe Band I-III (The Lord of the Rings 1-3) J.R.R. Tolkien [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover] 785.18 CAD This printing of the Lord of the Rings represents the first translation into German of one of Tolkien's most beloved works. The three volumns were translated by Margaret Carroux. While researching these books, I found that these three books are not the first printing from 1969, but are definately second or third printing from between 1972 and 1976 before Hobbit Press Im Ernst Klett Verlag became Klett-Cotta in 1978. Unfortunately there is no markings indicating which edition they represent. The boards on all three books are flat and parallel and the cloth bindings are in excellent shape. There is foxing on the edges off all three volumns and the front bottom corners of each book have a bit of discoloration on them from sitting on a shelf. The leading edge of the dust jackets have slight dings and the dust jacket of the first book and a minute tear on the top right edge. The maps of Middle Earth on the inside back covers are intact, still attached and very crisp and clear. These volumns are an excellent addition to any Tolkien collector's library at a resonable price regardless of whether you speak German or not.

No tears a copy of minor light stains, one on RotK jacket spine, sunning to jacket spines. Of 1st edition sets you are more or less buying jacket as far as the value, thus this set is priced higher. Books are excellent, all have uniform wear, indicating they were purchased together which by 1962 was normal. With a near fine period slipcase. Condition, Condition, Condition! As Tolkien book collecting grows in popularity, the availability of collectible/investment original condition books and jackets disappears. It is not just the printing/edition that matters to the value, but that serious collectors want only the best condition. Books with damaged jackets or even no jackets at all, are now increasing in price, driving up the price of complete and better condition copies. You could have a poor copy worth only £200 or a fine copy worth £5,000. That's how important condition is to value. You should always buy the best you can afford original jackets, early printing and very good or better. Unlike other genre's, the market for Tolkien early editions is quite mature and well established. It is not a matter of waiting for a better copy to come along. There aren't going to be any! There are no more hiding in the attic or charity shops. People sell off their more worn copies when they upgrade and now leave their collections to their children. We've been a specialist dealer for 25 years. Some examples that were plentiful just two years ago are now completely gone or only the dregs appear. As time goes on, you'll pay more money, for less condition. First editions The Lord of the Rings and Hobbits remain the most in demand. If you like it, can afford it, then buy it while its available!

Black covers with beautiful gilt, silver and green decoration to the front, based on a drawing by the author, gilt lettering to the spine, speckled page edges, patterned endpapers, two fold out maps, pages printed on fine India paper. Slipcase with a few marks, some wear to the corners of the opening. Book with bright gilt decorations, square, securely bound, some minor marks to the covers, spine a little faded, clean pages, two leaves with some creasing towards a corner, some faint corner creasing, otherwise smart, complete with both fold out maps. Very good condition. Printed on fine India paper, 1193 pages. Will be carefully bubble wrapped and packed in a box.

Hint of shadowing on text block edges. Moderate strip tanning on free endpapers else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original dust jacket, not price clipped, shelf worn, lightly toned, and rubbed at edges, more markedly so at the ends of a sunned and scratched spine. Dust wrapper now protected in an archival-quality Mylar sleeve, fitted without the use of tape or adhesives.
