Allen & Unwin 1963, 63, 63, impressions 13, 10, 10, 1963 set. In 1964 a special buckram faux leather set was release. 1965 & 1966 the familiar first editions return. Every now and then a special set like this comes along. This is one. Except for slight tanning to the jackets spines, they are near fine. The have uniform wear/colouring although the flash is making RotK jacket look darker, it isn't. No tears or tattering, several ""dents"" to paper, but these don't extend to the book covers. Not that noticeable in the Mylar. Importantly, the dust jackets are the original light grey colour which is now extremely rare. Books are read once or possible unread, true fine, no marks, Spine gilt as-new. Slipcase label is stained and worse for wear generally, but a solid 5th State case.
The Lord of the Rings. 1977 First Folio Edition, Fine J.R.R. Tolkien [Near Fine] [Hardcover]
731.47 CAD
First Printing, Folio Society 1977 Set. This is the better of two sets I'm selling. Above average. These are quite common to find, but usually the light grey spine 1/4 leather is worn/aged down to the brown under colour, instead of white, also pitted and stained. The gilt can be chipped also. The cloth covers are generally in better condition, but can have very minor marks in places. Pages and binding are usually as new, unread in many cases The price/value comes down to the degree of wear and staining to the spine faux leather. This one is average. The slipcase has the odd mark, darkening to front edge, but generally found in good condition. This is an overall average set, thus the lower asking price than past finer sets. Though Folio, we beleive these sets will remain collectable compared to other book club editions. It may not be widely known, but the illustrator Ingahild Grathmer was really Margarethe II of Denmark, who took the throne in January 1972 after her father passed away and recently abdicated. She sent Tolkien her Lord of the Rings drawings when she was still Crown Princess—but becoming Queen didn’t mean Margarethe slowed down on her extracurricular activities. The same illustrations were used in the 1977 Danish Edition of The Lord of the Rings. She was only the second artist after Pauline Baynes in which Tolkien approved of her art style. This may be because it was similar to his own style.
In de Ban van de Ring (1956-1957) Very first Foreign translation (In Dutch) of The Lord of The Rings - 1 of only 3000 Tolkien J.R.R. [Near Fine] [Har
753.18 CAD
In de Ban van de Ring (3 Volumes) represents the rare and very first foreign translation of 'The Lord of The Rings', published in the Netherlands just a year after the English editions. This nearly fine set comprises the First Dutch edition, all First prints, published by Uitgeverij Het Spectrum, Utrecht/Antwerpen, in 1956-1957. The first Dutch edition had a print run of only 3000 copies, making it even rarer than the first UK edition. Unlike the latter, the Dutch edition includes two maps instead of three: a removable map in the first part and a fold-out map in the last. On the dust jacket of De Reisgenoten ['The Fellowship of the Ring ], Tolkien's name is mistakenly listed as J.J.R. Tolkien instead of J.R.R. Tolkien. An excellent near fine set with minor bumping to the spine ends. The brown covers, featuring red print on the spines and gold lettering, are in very good condition with only minimal wear. The binding is firm. The pages are bright and fresh, as is the red top edge of all three books. The set comes from the estate of its first owner, T. Hansen, who neatly wrote his name and the date of purchase (respectively 5 Dec. 1956, 25 June 1957, and 5 Dec. 1957) in small letters in the upper right corner of the first free endpaper of each volume. These dates correspond to the publication months of the respective volumes, making this a notable addition. Both maps are in near fine condition. The map in the sleeve of De Reisgenoten (The Fellowship of the Ring) has slight discoloration due to the sleeve, which is quite common. The set comes with excellent facsimile dust jackets, now protected by removable Brodart Archival Covers. A valuable addition to any Tolkien collection.
