100.18 CAD
SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper as follows: "Ruth Le Prade The Poets Garden God bless Grandma!" Also appears to be signed by Adeline de Walt Reynolds on the obverse of the front free endpaper as follows: "Frances Steel Her Book from "Grandma" with LOVE Adeline de Walt Reynolds in appreciation of her efficiency July 1053." 8vo. 48p. Frontispiece black and white photo of the author. Red cloth with gild letters on the front cover. Just touches of wear to extremities, barely visible ring on the front cover, gilt bright, faint fade mark top one inch of front cover, else near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. There are two additional black and white phots as follows: affixed to the front pastedown with photo corners is a captioned photo of "The Troupers in 'Here Comes the Groom' Jane Wyman and Adeline DeWalt Reynolds" which has written on the bottom margin this: "To Frances LOVE 'Grandma'," and affixed to the rear pastedown is a captioned photo of Adeline de Walt Reynolds as White Moon in a scene from the 20th Century fox Production 'Pony Soldier" which has written in the margin this: "With LOVE 'Grandma'." Beneath the signature of Ruth Le Prade on the front free endpaper in the same hand as that on the black and white picture is a circle with three Bs arranged in a triangular relationship. Born near Modesto, CA, Ruth Le Prade [1895-1969] was a poet prodigy as a high schooler who was recognized by the famous California poet, Edwin Markham. She was the author of several proto-feminist poems, but her life-s work really focused on her principal creation, called "The Poet's Garden." Apparently this was a group of like-minded women who gathered at La Prade's home and in her garden on Spaulding Avenue in Los Angeles to discuss social reform, civil rights, aesthetics, religious patriotism, as well as poetry readings, music, and dramatic playlets. Born in Benton County, Iowas, Adeline De Walt Reynolds [1862-1961] was an actress in the 1940s and 1950s. She appeared in several well-known movies, but usually uncredited. She also appeared in several as a Grandmother, which may account for the inscriptions in this book: Behind the Rising Sun (1943), Stars in My Crown (1951), Street of Chance (1942), Tales of Manhattan (1942). She also apparently played herself as Grandmother in Three Live (1953). It is not clear what the relationship was between Le Prade and Reynolds. Still, this book of peotry is a very unusual piece of Los Angeles and Hollywood history and literature.

530.18 CAD
First appearance of any material for *Always Coming Home*. SIGNED by Ursula K. Le Guin and inscribed, 'For Tony with love / from Ursula - / Valentine's Day 1985 [heart]!.' Tony Wolk was a lifelong friend of LeGuin's. The two created and co-taught the first Science Fiction course at Portland State University for many years. 43, [6], 79 pp. Printed dos-a-dos or 'Ace-Double' style, perfectbound in printed French-flap wraps with deckled fore edge. Some light rubbing around the extremities, entirely clean and sharp otherwise with sound binding. ''The Visionary' is one of several autobiographies in a book called Always Coming Home (not yet published as I write this introduction). In the book are stories, life stories, histories, poems, and dramatic works of a people called the Kesh or the Valley People, who might be going to have lived in a particular region of Northern California a long time from now, as well as descriptions of their ways, pictures of their world, and examples of their music.' (From Le Guin's introduction). *Always Coming Home* is regarded by many critics as Le Guin's greatest artistic accomplishment. Showing the influence of her parents, both of whom were cultural anthropologists. Her father, Alfred Kroeber, was a cultural anthropologist who worked extensively with native peoples in California Her mother, Theodora Kroeber, though never professionally employed, was also an anthropologist and wrote the noted book *ISHI*, based on the multi-year relationship Alfred had with the last surviving member of the Northern California Yahi tribe. Throughout Ursula's childhood the Kroeber family would spend summers at the family's home in the rural hills of Napa Valley, the eventual native land of the Kesh.

[Signed] [First Edition] LAVINIA: A Novel [Annotated Copy] Le Guin, Ursula K.; [Tony Wolk Association] [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
475.18 CAD
SIGNED by Ursula Le Guin on the title page and subsequently inscribed in blue ink, 'For Tony, with love.' Tony Wolk was a lifelong friend and colleague of Le Guin's. The two created and co-taught the first Science Fiction course at Portland State University. [9], 2-279, [1] pp. 8vo, cream paper over boards backed in burgundy paper, gilt spine lettering, deckled fore edge. Map by Jeffry C. Mathison. Annotated throughout on about 1/3 of the pages in blue ink, apparently the same pen Ursula used to sign the book. Wolk tracks major themes and images in marginal glosses, astutely observes the craft of Le Guin's prose stylings, and notes inter- and extra-textual references. Clean and sound apart from the annotations; DJ crisp and bright. An historical novel by the celebrated Science Fiction writer, one of her most notable genre detours. Prefiguring the novels of Madeline Miller, Lavinia tells the story of the daughter of Aeneas, left silent by Virgil but in Le Guin's version unleashed to forge her own destiny in defiance of convention, patriarchy, and even prophecy.

724.06 CAD
Inscribed in the month of publication to one of the subjects (singer and actress Marianne Faithfull) of this photographic work by the book's author, photographer and film director Périer. The inscription on the half-title page reads: 'Dear Marianne. With all the love she knows. Jean-Marie. Le 26-9-12'. Large format, 287 pages. Other musicians photographed in the book include The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Chuck Berry and Petula Clark. She went on to release an amazing 22 solo albums, and fought against drug addiction, in a life that was marked by turbulence and personal struggle. The book is in near fine condition, with no bumps to the boards; rubbed at the foot of the spine and at the corners. Internally very clean. The jacket is not price-clipped. Closed edge tear to the upper panel; shorter closed edge tears to lower panel. A very collectable copy of a book inscribed to one of its subjects, photographed sumptuously in colour and black and white. Provenance: from the estate of Marianne Faithfull.
