[Signed] [First Edition] HAPPY FAMILIES ARE ALL ALIKE Taylor, Peter [Used - Very good] [Hardcover] [Signed] [First Edition] HAPPY FAMILIES ARE ALL ALIKE Taylor, Peter [Used - Very good] [Hardcover] 785.18 CAD A collection of ten short stories, including the O. Henry Award-winning "Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time". Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with silver-stamped titling. Mild stain to the spine heel, with some light rubbing to the dust jacket; otherwise very good. Presentation copy, inscribed by Peter Taylor to writer Jean Stafford and her husband, fellow writer A.J. Liebling, on the front flyleaf. Two of the greatest American short story writers of their generation, Taylor (1917-94) and Stafford (1915-79) met by way of the poet Robert Lowell, who was the former's roommate at Kenyon College and the latter's first husband. Stafford divorced Lowell in 1948 but remained close to Taylor for the rest of her life. Appropriately enough, when Stafford was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 for her Collected Stories (1969), Taylor's own Collected Stories was among the finalists. In a memorial tribute composed for the American Academy of Arts and Letters shortly after Stafford's death, Taylor wrote, "When one settles down to read down to read Jean Stafford's novels and stories one advisedly has a dictionary - a big dictionary - close by. For she was a literary artist in the most literal sense. Her most profound and her wittiest effects alike are got through words themselves. And her remarkable diction, her complicated syntax, her elaborate sentence structure all spilled over into her conversation (if it wasn't, as a matter of fact, the other way round) and were to some degree responsible for making her conversation the delight it was." Born in Covina, California, Jean Stafford was an American short story writer and novelist noted for her disaffected female characters, who often must confront restrictive societal conventions and institutions as they come of age. Her personal life was marked by bouts with alcoholism and troubled relationships; however, during her marriage to A.J. Liebling (1904-63), a leading writer for The New Yorker, she enjoyed a brief period of domestic bliss.
