[Signed] [First Edition] Painting the Sea: Ships Sheds Seagulls de Garthe [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
110.18 CAD
Painting the Sea; Ships, Sheds, Seagulls; by de Garthe, published by W. E. deGarthe, 1969; printed by Kentville Publishing Co. Ltd., Kentville, Nova Scotia, Canada. Signed twice by de Garthe; top of title page Peggy's Cove, N.S. signed W E de Garthe; middle of title page to Glenda with love from Agnes & Bill; followed by Love & Best Wishes Mom & Dad, by someone unknown. William de Garthe (19071983) was born Birger Edward Degerstedt in Kaskinen, a remote island town off the northwest coast of Finland. After graduating from high school with his strongest marks in art and drawing, de Garthe studied art in Helsinki while awaiting his call-up for active duty in the Finnish military. After his release from service, deGarthe obtained his passport declaring his profession as "artist"and emigrated to Canada in the fall of 1926. Declaring he was on a quest to find "the most beautiful spot on earth", in 1930 de Garthe quit his job in Montreal with the goal of sailing to Brazil to join an aunt there. He travelled by rail to Halifax to board a ship bound for South America but on disembarking he was struck by the similarity between Nova Scotia and the rugged seacoast of his native Finland. He later declared, "I didn't have to travel any farther." Throughout his career de Garthe worked in many mediums; however, he is best known for his atmospheric oil paintings depicting scenes of life on and around the rugged Nova Scotia coast. He also completed works in charcoal, pen and ink, lithograph and fresco and, in later life, sculpture. De Garthe authored and illustrated three books: This is Peggy's Cove Nova Scotia (1956), Painting the Sea (1969), and The Story of the Herring Gull: Larus Argentatus (1977). De Garthe's Peggy's Cove home has been transformed into The William E. deGarthe Gallery where 65 of his paintings and sculptures are on permanent exhibition. This book, 107 pages, is in very-good condition in a very-good dust jacket, now in a protective mylar wrap. An interesting copy of an instructional work by an artist who fell in love with Peggy's Cove, just minutes away from where this book dealer resides.

Polish-American George Adamski (1891-1965) was heavily involved in the California occult scene of the early twentieth century. Before delving into flying saucers, Adamski created the Royal Order of Tibet religious movement in which he was a philosopher-guru. A first edition of Adamski's own story of what has happened to him since he wrote his best-selling book "Flying Saucers Have Landed," in which he described the memorable day in November of 1952, when he first made personal contact with a man from another world, and was able, nearly a month later, to make photographs within 100 feet of the very saucer that had brought his original visitor. These photographs went on to become world famous. In "Inside the Space Ships," Adamski provides 16 photographs and illustrations of great space ships from which flying saucers are launched. The lion's share of these photographs was taken in April, 1955, and neither the photographs nor a description of them has been published up until this book. To this day, George Adamski continues to be one of the most extraordinary and controversial figures in UFO history. Signed by George Adamski on the front free endpaper.
