The red boards are in very good condition (bumping of spine top and bottom, discoloring at top of spine, bumped corners of back board). The dust jacket is intact but in poor condition with many tears. 9 ½ x 6 ½, 507 pages, 33 ounces XX [From the dust jacket flaps] THREE CHEERS FOR THE RED, RED AND RED contains a rich vein of humor, ridicule, satire and irony, and discusses logically the issues which are undermining the Constitutional form of government. The book is divided into three parts: the first part dealing with regimentation of the press; the second part with the American intelligentsia; and the third part: the Administration. THREE CHEERS FOR THE RED, RED AND RED contains many records which will be amazing to the American people and proves that an attempt is on foot to overthrow the government of the people, by the people and for the people. XX [Wikipedia] Percy Lee Crosby (December 8, 1891 - December 8, 1964 was an American author, illustrator and cartoonist best known for his comic strip Skippy. Adapted into movies, a novel and a radio show, Crosby's creation was commemorated on a 1997 U.S. Postal Service stamp. An inspiration for Charles Schulz's Peanuts, the strip is regarded by comics historian Maurice Horn as a classic. which innovated a number of sophisticated and refined touches used later by Charles Schulz and Bill Watterson. Humorist Corey Ford, writing in Vanity Fair, praised the strip as America's most important contribution to humor of the century. From 1928 to 1937, Crosby produced 3,650 Skippy strips, ten books of fiction, political and philosophical essays, drawings and cartoons, as well as numerous pamphlets, while also mounting a dozen exhibitions in New York City, Washington, D.C., London, Paris and Rome of his oils, watercolors and other paintings and drawings. His 1931 memoir A Cartoonist's Philosophy was found to be too polemical for eight publishers, and Crosby published it himself, in a money-losing venture; his future books were all privately published under his own name or Freedom Press, which he founded in 1936. Although he had voted for Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1932 U.S. Presidential election, Crosby opposed Roosevelt's controversial Judiciary Reorganization Bill of 1937. Crosby's vitriolic editorials called the president crazed for power. In December 1948, Crosby was committed to the psychiatric ward of Bellevue Hospital. Sixteen years later he died, still institutionalized.

THE BRIDWELL SITE, CROSBY COUNTY, TEXAS, written and signed by Wayne Parker, edited by the staff of Crosby County Pioneer Memorial, softcover with spiral binding, first edition, illustrated, 1982. ITEM CONDITION: near fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dog ears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The wraps are in very good condition (minor edge chipping). 11 x 8 ½, 87 pages, 11 ounces XX [From the preface] The Honorable Choise Smith, Judge of Floyd County and the Author have been surface collecting and excavating from the Bridwell Site since the summer of 1952. At least five other people have considerable collections from this site and nunerous artifact collectors have dug from time to time during the 1970s. As of this date in 1982 the site has been destroyed for future Archaeological recognizance. This Neo and Historic Indian occupation was named for the late J. S. Bridwell owner of the Bridwell Ranch Site which is the subject of this article. The Bridwell Site had a prominent circled ridge approximately two (2) feet high from the original surface which is dark in color from the impregnation of cultural debris, bone, and charcoal. (Discussed later in site description.) Ten (10) test trenches located at different areas on the circled ridge were excavated to preserve archaeological information and artifacts before the site was completely destroyed by relic collectors. This series of work was done from July 1974 to March 1978. This late prehistoric site produces some of the same types of lithic material as the Montgomery Site located approximately nine (9) miles northwest in Blanco Canyon. James Word reported on the Montgomery Site for the South Plains Archaeology Society in 1965. The Bridwell Site and the Montgomery Site appear to be profoundIy contemporary.

Number 893 of 1000 copies, signed and numbered by Rackham. With 15 color plates on heavy brown paper, and black and white illustrations throughout, retaining half-title. Rebound in red calf with decorated spine compartments and gilt title on blue leather, red marbled endpapers. Top-edge of text block gilt with rest of edges uncut. Some scratches to front and back boards, offsetting to half-title and last text page (136), and all pages facing the brown paper plates, otherwise interior bright and clean. Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's novella Undine (1811), is a German reimagining Paracelsus's sixteenth-century alchemical folklore, in which a water nymph hopes to gain a spirit by marrying a human knight, but their romance has tragic consequences. ""With the aqueous world of Undine Rackham found an opportunity to revive and develop his earlier art nouveau linear decorative drawing. Especially in the need to incorporate waves and water currents in his pictures. He was thus able to connect a felicitous quality of decoration into his plates, was well as a new feeling for flat pattern which harks back to fin de siècle without being too openly mannered"" (Gettings). ""Although the waves and eddies of Undine bear the mark of Art Nouveau, the work was still another step forward for Rackham, the unity of conception in the line drawings and the colour plates, the assertion of contrast in the moods of the heroine, rendering it a masterpiece of sympathetic understanding"" (Hudson). Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children’s books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic—from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Rial 93. Near Fine.

Jack Et Jane (Jack and Jill) Louisa May Alcott [Very Good] [Hardcover]
660.18 CAD
JACK ET JANE [1883] First French Edition of Louisa May Alcott's Jack and Jill: A Village Story. Paris: Bibliothèque D’Education et de Récréation, J. Hetzel et Cie, [1883] Translated by P.J. Stahl and Lermont. Illustrated with wonderful and dramtic illustrations by J. Geoffroy Bound in collectible Percaline Binding. This French edition was published three years after the first American Edition of Jack and Jill: A Village Story was published in 1880. The name “Jill” is of English origin. French translator P.J. Stahl took many liberties with Alcott’s writings; in this volume, he changed “Jill” to “Jane” which is rooted in the old French name “Jehanne”, and an often used alternative to “Joan”. 8vo, original red quarter morocco, red cloth boards, gilt decorations and lettering. Black and red inlay. Frontis, engraved title-page and 22 plates by J. Geoffroy. Eight-page publisher’s catalog at the end. OCLC records two different editions of this title in French, one dated 1883 and another dated 1884. This copy corresponds in pagination to the 1883 edition and the publisher’s catalog advertises books as “En Parparation pour 1884.” Provenance: From the collection of Pierre Desmottes, bibliophile and collector of percaline bindings. His bookplate is pasted inside on the back of the front cover. Condition: Very Good. Some shelf wear to top and bottom of spine and light bumping of all board corners. Gold gilt and red writing on spine are slightly sun faded but remain nicely readable. Light wear at cover joint. Cover decor is near fine: Red, black, and gold. Gold gilt page edges are crisp and bright. Varying degree of light foxing throughout the book. The binding is Very Good. This appears to be a very well-cared for and treasured volume from Pierre Desmottes library. Covered in protective mylar.
