In-8, cartonnage éditeur de percaline brique, dos lisse, titre, auteur et éditeur dorés, filets aux coiffes, quadruple filets d'encadrement à froid sur les plats, xv, (3), 550 pages. First edition, inscribed by the author to Léon Say.American economist and statistician, professor at MIT and later at Yale, Francis Amasa Walker (1840–1897) was one of the leading figures in nineteenth-century American economic thought. His treatise Money (New York, Henry Holt, 1878) ranks among the earliest major American works devoted entirely to monetary theory. It reflects the debates of the period over the gold standard, bimetallism (the ""free silver movement""), and the monetary reform of 1873. Walker examines the mechanisms of money, internal monetary dynamics (bank notes, coinage, etc.), and issues specific to the contemporary U.S. economy.""Unquestionably the most prominent and best known of American [economic] writers"" (F.W. Tausig, quoted in the Dictionary of American Biography, X:343-44).(The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, 1987, vol. 4, p. 850).Copy bearing the author’s presentation inscription: ""With the homage of the Author,"" very likely addressed to Léon Say, whose engraved bookplate appears on the verso of the front free endpaper. An economist and statesman, former Minister of Finance under the French Third Republic and President of the Senate, Léon Say (1826–1896) belonged to the eminent liberal and financial dynasty of the Say family, whose most celebrated member was his grandfather Jean-Baptiste Say.Head- and tailcaps and corners slightly rubbed. An exceptional copy inscribed by the author. Autograph; x, (4), 505 pages; Inscribed and Signed on ffep "" For Kay and Rowlie / to make every thing / perfectly clear // Love / Arthur"". Dustjacket clipped and has edgewear, in mylar protective cover. Arthur Meier Schlesinger Jr. (1917 – 2007) was an American historian, social critic, and public intellectual. Much of Schlesinger's work explored the history of 20th-century American liberalism. In particular, his work focused on leaders such as Harry S. Truman, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy. Schlesinger served as special assistant and ""court historian"" to President Kennedy from 1961 to 1963. He wrote a detailed account of the Kennedy administration, from the 1960 presidential campaign to the president's state funeral, titled A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House, which won the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. In 1968, Schlesinger actively supported the presidential campaign of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, which ended with Kennedy's assassination in Los Angeles. PROVENANCE: Rowland and Kay Evans were close friends of the Schlesingers and also friends with the Kennedy family. Evans has made a couple notes on rear free endpaper and underlined a few lines on four pages. Evans was a provocative newspaper columnist, commentator and author who antagonized liberal politicians and championed conservative causes. He left Yale and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 during World War II and was discharged in 1944 because of malaria. In 1963, Mr. Evans and Mr. Novak began writing ''Inside Report,'' an insider's view of politics that was published four times a week until Mr. Evans retired in 1993. Mr. Evans and Robert Novak began their work as columnists in the early 1960's, a time when newspaper columnists wielded outsize influence in national politics. The pair pioneered in transferring that influence to the medium of cable television with the political discussion program ''Evans & Novak'' -- carried on CNN from that cable network's beginning. Rowland Evans and his wife Kay (Katherine Winton Evans), also a respected writer and editor, were mainstays on the Washington social scene, hosting many memorable gatherings in their handsome Georgetown house -- to which flocked influential and remarkable people drawn from journalism, politics and general society over the decades from the 1960s to the 2000s. Both Evans and Novak became more predictably conservative over the years, particularly during the Reagan years. Reportedly, both columnists voted for JFK in 1960 and for Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Evans earned a place on Richard Nixon's infamous ""Enemies List."" Novak reported that Evans had JFK as a guest for the first dinner party the latter attended as President Elect. Kay and Rowland Evans has a particularly close friendship with Robert F. Kennedy, his wife Ethel and their family.; Signed by Author

Woman Physiologically Considered as to Mind, Morals, Marriage, Matrimonial Slavery, Infidelity ad Divorce Alexander Walker [Very Good] [Hardcover]
116.43 CAD
WOMAN PHYSIOLOGICALLY CONSIDERED AS TO MIND MORALS MARRIAGE WALKER 1840. Evidently, our author, an anthropologist has made the study of woman from the perspective of his profession, a noted theme of his writings. I have not read this book or even perused it but I do sincerely hope that the views expressed therein, while doubtless dated and archaic, are not offensive to women. Please find then: Woman Physiologically Considered as to Mind, Morals, Marriage, Matrimonial Slavery, Infidelity ad Divorce, by Alexander Walker. The title page says the book includes: …an Appendix containing notes and additions edited by an American Physician. This small hard cover book (4 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches, 432 pages) was published by J.& H.G. Langley of New York, dated 1840. The book is bound in blind-stamped brown paper-covered boards with gilt titles on the spine. Please see the photos of the Table of Contents for your further information. Condition: This book is in very good condition, especially considering its age. The hard covers are dust-dulled and bumped but not badly. There is two small chips out of the paper at the upper spine. The covers also show faint lines where there was some contact with water, nothing extreme. Inside, the water stains do show in a few places but they are light in nature and do not affect the text or legibility or really presentability (please see the photos). In fact, in my experience the interior pages are better than could be expected with some very faint foxing on just a few pages and no real toning. A former owner has left his barely legible penciled name on the first blank page and there are some penciled initials on the rear endpaper. Amazingly, the hinges are intact and the binding tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Blanding was closely asociated with Hawaii, though he grew up in Oklahoma and later lived in both Florida and California. His poetry writing career began in the early twenties, writing daily poems for an adveetiser in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. His very successful Vagabond's House came out in 1928 and went through nearly fifty printing by 1948. This is a rather different venture a very funny little account of Virgin Annie, whose torrid affair with a sailor kills her, but she dies with a beatiific smile! Althugh in the introduction to the book Blanding says there are earlier privately printed editions, this is actually the first edition, published in 1933. The strange thing about this copy are the notes ""for the edification of rustics by C. R. Mason, Jr."" Mr.Mason explias such things as Waikiki is ""a beach"", GOB is ""colloquial for sailor,"" and ""oke"" is whiskey. these notes are in pencil. The book was published with an empty envelope pasted on the rrep, with the inscritpyio: For sundry reasons the astonishing consummation of the balad must be with held, temporarily only-we hope- fromt he further enjoyment of the reader.
