With 65 engraved plates printed in color à la poupée. Bound in later red morocco, paneled in gilt and blind. On the spine, five raised bands. Illustrator gilt to the third panel, title gilt to fifth, date gilt to the tail. Gilt dashed to the edges of the boards, continuing around to the inside dentelle. Red end-papers. Roughly-repaired losses to the upper edges of [pi]2 (title-leaf) and 312 (the table). Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) was a philosopher in the true Greek sense: a general seeker of wisdom. He is of course most studied for his political philosophy, but his work on pedagogy, Emile, is perhaps even more influential. His pedagogical essays are continuous with his broader philosophical stance, and owe a great debt to nature and natural history in particular. Emile emphasizes the importance of an understanding about the natural world, both for its complexity and its simplicity. Rousseau was deeply curious about the world of plants (an engraving by Meyer of Rousseau "herborisant" or herbalizing illustrates this beautifully), and wrote the present treatise in the form of letters to a woman teaching her daughters botany. This epistolary structure is a very XVIIIc mode, drawing ultimately on Cicero. Pierre-Josephe Redouté (1759-1840) was a rather more professional botanist. He came into the favor of the Empress Josephine in particular, and illustrated the roses, irises and lilies (inter alia) in her gardens at Malmaison. He is widely esteemed as the greatest of all flower-painters, and in 1805 his powers were at their apex. It is therefore unsurprising that it is his name and not the great Swiss philosopher's that has been applied to the spine of the volume. The present item is the first state of the first edition, with pl. 54 mis-numbered "62" and without printed titles. Dunthorne 252; Nissen, BBI 1688; Pritzel 7824; Sitwell, Great Flower Books p. 134; Stafleu-Cowan 9688.
[Signed] [First Edition] The Days of Henry Thoreau (signed) Harding, Walter [Henry David Thoreau] [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
410.18 CAD
An association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Bob Galvin, our Thoreau book-hunter par excellence, who tracked down this first edition. With best wishes, Walt Harding. Concord, Mass, July 4, 1980 -- the 135th anniversary of Henry's going to Walden." Uncommon signed. Bob Galvin served forten years on the board of the Thoreau Society and for four as its vice president (his license plate apparently read "THORO"). A nice association for this biography of Thoreau by one its most dedicated scholars, and a neat anniversary mentioned in the inscription. A near fine book in a good jacket with substantial loss to top and bottom of spine, but with panels that present well.
[Signed] [First Edition] The New Machiavelli Wells, H. G. [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
1535.18 CAD
A controversial novel at the time, about the affair of an author-politician who recants socialism and has an affair with a graduate student. The book was obviously based on Wells and his affair with the women's rights activist Amber Reeves. The novel also pokes fun at Beatrice and Sidney Webb, two prominent socialists, whose characters are thinly disguised and everyone in intellectual Britain knew who he meant. The novel was serialized in the literary magazine, The English Review, but initially no British publisher would touch it. As a result, the first edition is the American version, which came out in 1910. According to Wells' biographer Michael Sherborne, the sales of this book doubled that of any previous Wells novel. Wells told a friend around this time, "My personal unpopularity is immense but amusing & people listen with blanched faces to the tale of my vices & go & buy my books." (Quoted in H. G. Wells: Another Kind of Life, p. 211). Edition information from The Eric Korn Collection of H. G. Wells by M. E. Korn (typescript produced by Serendipity Books). First edition, second issue (MCMXI on title page; all page edges trimmed; first quote on title page correctly attributed to G. H. Lewis; rear ads [10], [4], [16] pages). A very good copy in salmon-pink cloth, with the spine faded, as usual. This copy has Wells's typical, generic inscription on the front free endpaper, "With kind regards fr. H. G. Wells." In addition, there is a sheet with draft telegrams in Wells's hand to his American publisher seeking to delay the American publication of the book because Heinemann had agreed to bring out a British version in the spring (of 1911). In the end, Heinemann decided not to publish the book and the American publisher went ahead with its version. This copy probably belonged to a reviewer as it has a penciled list of page numbers and notes on the rear pastedown. There are also narrow bands of tape residue on the front free endpaper and the telegram draft.
[Signed] [First Edition] Count Luckner, The Sea Devil; Illustrations From Photographs Thomas, Lowell [Luckner, Felix von] [Used - Good] [Hardcover]
610.18 CAD
Octavo, [8], 308pp, [map], [appendix], [4]. Blue cloth, title stamped on the spine. The first printing, with no additional printings noted. Cloth torn on the spine, soiling to spine. Front hinge starting, but stable. Occasional foxing throughout. Frontispiece portrait of Count Luckner, numerous illustrated plates, endpaper maps. In the publisher's near fine dust jacket, likely married with this copy, faint soiling to spine, bright illustrations. Inscribed on the second free endpaper: "By Joe / Mr. John W. Binford / never say die! / yours Felix Count Luckner / Xmas 1936." Count Felix von Luckner (18811966) was a German naval officer famed for his World War I commerce-raiding exploits aboard the Seeadler, a wind-powered auxiliary cruiser he commanded with an unusual emphasis on minimizing loss of life; over an 11-month cruise in 191617, he captured or sank more than a dozen Allied ships while taking hundreds of prisoners without a single combat fatality. Nicknamed the "Sea Devil," he cultivated a public image of chivalry at sea, and his postwar career mixed lectures, memoir writing (The Sea Devil's Fo'c'sle, The Sea Devil), and occasional controversy tied to his status as a nationalist symbol during the Weimar and early Nazi periods, though he later distanced himself from the regime. His dramatic escape attempts after the Seeadler was wrecked on Mopelia Islandculminating in a brief recapture after seizing a small boatadded to his legend.
[First Edition] Zeitoun - Dave Eggers - 2009 First Printing, McSweeney's, NF+, Ephemera Dave Eggers [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
110.18 CAD
McSweeney's first edition of Zeitoun, Dave Eggers' landmark nonfiction account of Abdulrahman Zeitoun and his family during and after Hurricane Katrina - now regarded as a defining narrative of post-9/11 America. Published in 2009 by McSweeney's Books, San Francisco, this first printing was issued without a dust jacket, as published, and features the publisher's distinctive pictorial boards with maroon cloth spine, designed by Rachell Sumpter. This is a particularly clean and attractive copy. The exterior is Near Fine+, with crisp boards, strong color, and minimal handling evidence. The interior is Fine, with bright, unmarked pages, no writing or ownership marks, and a tight, square binding. An uncommon survival point is present: the original slip-on 'sleeve' jacket at the rear board, often missing from copies encountered on the market. Laid in is a Newsweek magazine article (September 13, 2010) titled 'What America Has Lost' by Fareed Zakaria, which directly references Zeitoun, adding period-critical context and collectible ephemera. A sharp, presentation-worthy example of a modern American first edition. Dave Eggers is an American author, editor, and publisher whose work bridges literary nonfiction, social justice, and publishing innovation. Founder of McSweeney's and co-founder of 826 National, Eggers has played a central role in contemporary American letters, with Zeitoun standing among his most influential and enduring works
