[Signed] [First Edition] The Natural History of a Yard (signed) Dubkin, Leonard [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
410.18 CAD
Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Matilda Bargan, a good friend and staunch booster. Leonard Dubkin." Uncommon signed. An early work of urban nature writing: an account of the three years Dubkin and his daughter spent observing their small yard and its wildlife in Chicago. Notable for including a child as a key observer and character when the usual pattern of nature writing, then and now, is largely to exclude the domestic and familial. Dubkin was a journalist who became dedicated in his books to everyday nature in the Windy City; a small park in Chicago is named after him. Patterned paper boards, red cloth spine, red top stain. Near fine in with a little sunning/toning to board edges. In a very good jacket with rubbing to edges, slight wear to corners, and one quarter-inch tear at top edge of front panel near spine.

Original dust jacket light shelf wear, toning; clipped, protected in new clear sleeve. Rare near very good, directly signed sixth printing in near fine original wrapper. "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" is for both seasoned cooks and beginners who love good food & long to reproduce at home the savory delights of the classic cuisine, from the historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. This beautiful book, with over 100 instructive illustrations, is revolutionary in its approach because: It leads the cook infallibly from the buying and handling of raw ingredients, through each essential step of a recipe, to the final creation of a delicate confection. It breaks down the classic cuisine into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of recipes; the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations bound to increase anyone's culinary repertoire. 684 pages w/32 page index and a Note About the Author. [Signed] [First Edition] The Joy of Music Leonard Bernstein [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
251.18 CAD
LEONARD BERNSTEIN THE J0Y OF MUSIC SIMON & SCHUSTER 1959 1ST SIGNED. I am very pleased to be able to offer a copy of one of Leonard Bernstein s early books about music and more particularly about music in America. On offer here: "The Joy of Music" by Leonard Bernstein. The Joy of Music stands as a classic for all lovers of music who wish to experience it through the eyes, ears, and mind of one of the most inspired, and inspiring, music intellects of our time. Employing the creative device of "Imaginary Conversations" in the first section of the book, Bernstein illuminates the importance of the symphony in America, the greatness of Beethoven, jazz, and the art of composing. The book also includes a photo section and a third section with the transcripts from his televised Omnibus music series. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ½ x 9 ½ inches 305 pages) was published by Simon & Schuster of New York dated 1959 and the Fourth Printing of the First Edition (so stated). The book is bound in gray cloth with black decorations and silver gilt titles on cover and spine. This book includes Bernstein s autograph perhaps acquired in some other form (the former owners were musical professionals and associates of Bernstein) and taped to the front endpaper (where it has now darkened from age). Laid-in are a series of five or six newspaper clippings from the New York Times from mid-October 1990 just after Bernstein passed. Condition: This book is in very good condition albeit not without some signs of ageing. The hard covers are dust-dulled and faded on the spine and margins of the boards. The top and bottom of the spine are a bit frayed from bumping and the spine label is worn. Inside there is a neat bookplate from the former owners and the aforementioned Bernstein autograph. The interior pages are all clean and bright and unmarked. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. The NY Times clippings are toned and darkened but still intact.

[First Edition] Music Libraries: Their Organisation And Contents, With A Bibliography Of Music And Musical Literature (Two Volumes) Lionel R.
100.18 CAD
Apparent first edition (NAP, 1937 on the title page of Volume I, 1938 on the title page of Volume II). Very rare two-volume set, I saw only one other for sale anywhere on the Internet. My set is in excellent condition, quite surprising given its age. You can see the covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spines of both volumes is nicely bright. The cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The cover corners are also in excellent condition, no rubbing except for one speck-sized spot at each of the bottom corners of Volume II. The page edges of both volumes look very good. The pages in both volumes are solidly bound. The covers are nicely, tightly bound. The pages are exceptionally clean in both volumes. Scrolling through, I didn't find any instances of soiling in either. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases. There is a very light smooth crease off the outer edge of the title page of Volume II. There are no markings in either volume. There is a tiny bookseller label above the bottom corners of the front inside covers in each volume. In one it is green and in the other it is maroon. Interestingly, the labels read 'Harold Reeves, Books & Music, London, England.' There are no other attachments of any kind in either volume. In Part II of Volume I, some of the entries have a tiny pencil dash beside them on the blank margin. They could be erased if one chose to. There are no pencil marks in Part I of Volume I. There is no penciling anywhere in Volume II. Volume II has 318 pages, Volume I has 239 pages. 'Lionel Roy McColvin CBE, was a British librarian. He has been described as 'the dominant figure in British public librarianship' in the mid-20th century and a 'world leader' in the profession of librarianship.'
