It has been known by several names over the course of its history but claims to be the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States, with records going back to 1775 and the oldest building dating from 1792. During Prohibition, Buffalo Trace was allowed to stay open to make whiskey for "medicinal purposes". The Sazerac Company of New Orleans bought the company in 1992. The Buffalo Trace Straight Bourbon whiskey was introduced in 1999, when the distillery changed its name from George T. Stagg, although this name survives in a straight Bourbon still made at the facility. The distillery is home to a varied portfolio of brands (see below). Unsurprisingly, a varied selection of stills of all shapes and sizes, and there are 75 different locations within the site where barrels are aged.

"Laddie" Lucas, CBE, DSO, DFC. **** Group Captain Thomas Gilbert "Hamish" Mahaddie, DSO, DFC, AFC & Bar, FRAeS (19 March 1911 - 16 January 1997) was a Scotsman who served in the Royal Air Force (RAF). As a youth he was selected for an apprentice programme and was trained as an RAF ground crew "metal rigger". He had earned his wings and reached the rank of sergeant pilot by the outbreak of the Second World War. In his second tour he was selected to be a member of the newly formed "Pathfinder Force" (No. 8 Group RAF). At the end of his second combat tour he was brought onto Air Vice Marshal Don Bennett's Headquarter Staff in the position of "Group Training Inspector". In this position he selected, recruited and trained aircrews to serve in the Pathfinder Force. Within the span of two years from the start of the war Mahaddie had risen in rank from sergeant to group captain. Following the war he continued to serve in the RAF until 1958. Out of the service he worked as an electronics consultant for the Armed Services, and as an aircraft consultant for the film industry. His most remarkable accomplishment in the film industry was the procurement of aircraft, crews and service personnel for the film Battle of Britain (1969). LADDIE LUCAS was a superb wartime fighter pilot, an MP, a world class golfer who captained the Walker Cup team, a successful businessman and a fine writer. The defence of Malta in 1942, in which he commanded 249 Squadron, was perhaps one of his greatest achievements. Often outnumbered 10 to one, his squadron shot down more planes than any other over the skies of Malta.
