Closing in 1837 and reopening in 1878, the distillery was acquired in 1890 by John Hopkins and Company. Today, Tobermory is the only distillery on the Isle of Mull. The distillery has quite a small annual capacity of just one million litres and runs at but three quarters of this. In 1930, the distillery closed and was used as a power plant. It was not the only time Tobermory had been used for purposes other than whisky distillation; in 1982 the buildings were leased to a dairy company who used them for storing cheese. Tobermory is currently under Burn Stewart ownership following the acquisition of both the distillery and a good stock of whisky for £800,000. The malted barley is shipped from the Port Ellen maltings at the South-East of Islay, also home to a more recent experiment whereby some casks are sent for maturation on the island, these are bottled as Ledaig. There is now just one official bottling in production; a ten year-old. There have also been independent bottlings and although popularity has been weaning, under the management of Alan McConnochie of Bunnahabhain fame, there is expected to be a resurgence.

Following the Pattison Crisis, Aultmore (pronounced ‘Ollt-MORE’) closed for several years. The distillery briefly reopened in 1903, but was forced into closure once more owing to the barley shortage during the First World War. In 1923, the distillery was acquired by John Dewar & Sons for £20,000 and, two years later, became part of Distillers Company Limited, today a subsidiary of Diageo.

Size: 700ML Proof: 95 (47.5%ABV) Origin: Scotland Distillery: Ardmore A splendid single malt from Ardmore, distilled in 2012 and matured in ex-bourbon barrels. After nine years of rest, the whisky was independently bottled up by Càrn Mòr in 2022, releasing a total of 1,184 bottles for its Strictly Limited collection. Ardmore 9 Year Old 2012 - Strictly Limited (Càrn Mòr) 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Buttery pastries, wafts of floral tea, hearty bonfire smoke, and woody vanilla. Palate: Rich smoke and vanilla tangle alongside prickles of peppery oak and cooked apple. Finish: Butterscotch and soft fudge balance peppery heat, while charred heather and drying peat smoke linger. Distillery Information Built in 1898, Adam Teacher established the distillery to ensure a good supply of whisky for Teachers blended whisky. The build followed a surge of demand for Teachers products and was part of an extensive expansion of the company, including an international marketing campaign. Lying just below Knockandy Hill, alongside the railway line between Inverness and Aberdeen, Ardmore was one of the last remaining distilleries to rely on coal powered fires to heat its stills and did not convert to steam 'til 2003. In 2005, Beam Global became the new owners after buying twenty wine and spirit companies from Allied Domecq, for five billion dollars. Shortly after the acquisition, Ardmore’s capacity was increased from 3 to 5.1 million litres and in 2007 its own bottling was, at last, released, namely Ardmore Traditional. ‘Traditional’, matured in bourbon casks, followed by a secondary maturation in quarter casks, was originally launched for the duty free market but was released also on the American market in March of 2008. One of the largest distilleries in Scotland, Ardmore is also the site for large scientific research laboratories. The whisky is mostly quite peated, but a small amount of un-peated whisky is released during a few weeks yearly in the shape of Ardmore Ardlair, though this is used exclusively in various blends.

Palate: Orchard fruits, apple blossom, honeyed oats, and vanilla. Finish: A grassy, sweet finish, with shortbread biscuits and peppery spice. Distillery Information The Teaninich Distillery is one shrouded in mystery. Founded in 1817, the Highland single malt whisky producer today has an annual capacity of 10.2 million litres and distills for brands including Haig Dimple, VAT 69 and Johnnie Walker. Despite its size and stature (it’s Diageo’s third-largest whisky distillery, covering more than 20 acres), there’s not much out there about Teaninich as a whisky in its own right – which is rather a shame as the liquid exudes as much character and body as its two illustrious near-neighbours: Dalmore and Glenmorangie. It was Captain Hugh Munro, head of the local clan, who set up Teaninich more than 200 years ago. Fun fact: in 1887 it became the first distillery north of Inverness to have electricity and a telephone. Teaninich remained in Munro family hands up until 1904, when Robert Innes Cameron, formerly a major shareholder, became the sole owner. After his death in 1932, the site was acquired by Distillery Company Limited the following year. Teaninich was passed from pillar to post through various mergers and acquisitions during the latter part of the 20th century, and today the distillery is of course owned by Diageo. If Teaninich is well-known for anything it is surely its unique blend of historic whisky distilling and cutting-edge technology – for example, it is one of just two Scotch distilleries to up its efficiency through using a mash filter instead of a mash tun or lauter tun. This focus on modernity has only accelerated in recent years: in 2013 Diageo invested £26 million in the site, essentially constructing a brand new, six-still-strong stillhouse and more than doubling...

Strathisla 9 Year Old 2013 Single Cask (Private Label) 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: An aroma of Rosey Apples is joined by lemon shortbread, oily orange, honeyed toast, chocolate-covered ginger, and vanilla. Palate: Aromatic baking spice with milk chocolate, fizzy cherry, and toffee apples in support as well as a hint of crystallised ginger. Finish: Caramel and oak char linger. Distillery Information The Strathisla whisky distillery draws its waters from the calcium rich, peat-less Broomhill Spring. Rumour has it, kelpies - the supernatural shape shifting water horses from Scottish folk lore - haunt the spring at night. The distillery was founded by George Taylor and Alexander Milne in 1786 under the name Milltown, latterly changing the name to Milton. The original name was most probably a reference to the town of Keith in which the distillery lies, for around this period the area was a nucleus for the production of linen and the milling thereof. The name 'Strathisla' first came into being as the moniker given to spirit from the Milton distillery. The name stuck and was subsequently applied to the distillery proper in 1870. Strathisla is the oldest distillery in the North of Scotland and it started out life as a farm distillery. During the nineteenth century, Strathisla was expanded, particularly so after a devastating fire in 1876. William Longmore owned the distillery from 1830 and when it came to his retirement in 1880 it was passed down to his son-in-law, John Geddes-Brown. A decade later, the name reverted to Milton.
