With a Postscript as to 1838 GOUGER, Robert [Used - Very good] [Hardcover] 617.14 CAD London, Harvey and Darton, 1838 [first edition]. Duodecimo, viii, 136 pages. Original full dark green leather (extensively decorated in blind on both sides), recently rebacked in dark green calf retaining an early cloth backstrip and small leather title-label (with slight loss); new marbled endpapers; leather worn at the extremities, with the corners of the boards rounded off; all edges gilt; minor signs of age and use (including some early pencilling, most of it lightly erased); overall, a very good copy. A presentation copy in a presentation binding, inscribed on the flyleaf to 'The Revd. H.M. Villiers, with the author's best regards'. Robert Gouger (1802-1846), 'Earnest, persistent and practical, . [with] a pleasant manner and a persuasive tongue, but he was inclined to exaggerate his own republican views and the virtues of South Australia. With his youthful looks and boyish ardour he was often thought to be brash and reckless, yet he was South Australia's most devoted promoter' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). 'The South Australian Act was passed in August 1834 and a month later Gouger presented his library of colonial books to the South Australian Literary and Scientific Association. After much delay and more hard work by Gouger the South Australian Colonization Commission was gazetted in May 1835. Its first appointment was Gouger as colonial secretary, a recognition of faithful service that was affirmed even by the Colonial Office'. He arrived on the 'Africaine' in November 1836. His young wife and new-born son both died five months later. He 'bought eight town acres (3.2 ha) at Adelaide's first land sale, and began to build a house, but was soon entangled in the party factions that bedevilled the new settlement. He quarrelled with Osmond Gilles; after a public brawl they were both arrested and Gouger was suspended. By way of Hobart Town he left in November 1837 for England where he was reinstated by the Colonization Commission, raised funds for a Congregational chapel in Adelaide and published "South Australia in 1837; in a series of letters, with a postscript as to 1838". In October 1838 he married his cousin Sarah Whittem of Kenilworth. Gouger returned to Adelaide in June 1839 and resumed office, but his health began to fail. Soon after Governor (Sir) George Grey arrived he was appointed colonial treasurer. He bore the brunt of Grey's economic reorganization until August 1844 when he had to apply for leave because of mental affliction. He had also suffered in the depression but his claims for a pension and repayment of salary lost during his suspension were refused by the Colonial Office. Although Gouger had £1700 worth of securities, the sale of his effects yielded barely enough for him to return to London with his family. He died at Kensington on 4 August 1846, survived by his widow, two sons and a daughter'. Ferguson 2497. It is essentially an apology for any delay in despatch of the pre-ordered copy ('ALDAA is entirely run by volunteers. We have had a big rush of orders since the book was finally released on 18 July'). However, it also adds the important information that 'The initial print run of 3000 is now more than two thirds sold, due largely to ALDAA efforts. As soon as it is sold out, publishing rights will revert to the Aboriginal people through ALDAA'.

John Ure (18241901) was a Scottish merchant who served as Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1880 to 1883. In these two volumes is his account of his travels around the world. He devotes much of this account to his travels in Australia, New Zealand and the South Sea Islands. In publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally very smart, with minimal bumping to the extremities and the joints. Good colour to both volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first few pages and some offsetting to the paste downs and end papers of both volumes. Folding map in excellent condition. Very Good Indeed

'These papers are written solely for private distribution amongst relatives and special friends; and, as my family is rather numerous and dispersed, the necessity arises of having them printed'. This copy is inscribed on the verso of the title page to 'Charlotte de S. Dutton with kind regards' and signed by the author. MacDermott, an 1829 pioneer of Western Australia before settling in South Australia in 1846, died in 1877. The provenance is most interesting: Charlotte de S. Dutton was the widow of William Hampden Dutton (1805-1849); her mother's maiden name was Da Silva. In 1849, William's brother Francis Stacker Dutton (1818-1877) married MacDermott's daughter Caroline. The Duttons and their pastoral property, Anlaby, were household names in South Australia for generations; to put them into context, 'While working at Anlaby in 1842 Francis had discovered with Captain Charles Bagot the Kapunda copper mine' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').

The rear free endpaper has a small circular inkstamp for the 'Stephen King - Stuart Collection'. Stephen King Jr (1841-1915) was the surveyor and unofficial artist on John McDouall Stuart's sixth and final expedition (the party of ten made the first successful return crossing of the continent of Australia from south to north in 1862). Later, occasional reunions took place in Adelaide; four of the five survivors were present at the golden jubilee celebrations in 1912 (King, W.P. Auld, Heath Nash, and J. McGorrey). J.W. Billiatt (1863-1919), King's cousin and brother-in-law, had returned to live in England in 1900; he was the last survivor.

This bibliography is limited to Franciscan authors who, during all or part of their careers, actually resided and labored in Central America. This means that some important works concerning the area have been omitted, such as those of Fray Francsco de Ayeta, an energetic seventeenth-century procurador general of the American Franciscans who had made a visitation of Yucatan in 1684, and those of Fray Isidro Felix de Espinosa, biographer of Father Margil. Other Franciscans whose writings consist chiefly of letters, however important, are also omitted. The difficulties in compiling the present list was considerable. Most of the authors have been noted in previous bibliographies. In more than one case there are grounds for suspicion that men of the same or similar name have been confused in discussions of their lives and writings. Condition: Signed on half title. Jacket with chips to edges, corners and spine ends, one inch lacking at spine head, edges with tears else a better than very good copy in a good jacket.

The offprints are from the following four issues of 'Folk-Lore': September 1934 (pages 232-248); December 1934 (pages 317-342); June 1935 (pages 122-148); and September 1935 (pages 268-282). All four items were presentation copies from Daniel Davidson to Charles Mountford, and all four retained front covers are inscribed and signed 'With the compliments of D.S. Davidson' (the first line lightly cropped in most cases). Tipped in on the blank recto of the first printed page is an autograph letter signed by Davidson to 'Dear Mountford' (octavo, 2 pages on one leaf, on University of Pennsylvania letterhead, 27 March 1936). The letter mentions the 'myths you requested and hope you find them of interest'. He refers to his forthcoming publication, 'Aboriginal Australian Rock Carvings and Paintings', in which 'an attempt has been made to codify the literary sources and to point out some of the problems for future research. I have made use of your material'. He regrets their paths did not cross in Adelaide: 'My visit there furnished me with many happy memories . I understand Tindale will be coming this way before long . Please extend my best regards to the anthropological crowd in Adelaide'. Daniel Sutherland Davidson (1900-1952) was an American anthropologist who 'visited Australia in 1930-31 and 1938-40, examining private and museum collections and carrying out field-work, mainly in northern Australia, where he excavated several prehistoric sites. In 1934 and 1936 he located and edited important, previously unpublished, material by E. Hassell from the 1880s, on Aboriginal life in south-western Australia. His other research resulted in monographs on rock and decorative art, social institutions, tribal distribution and string figures, and in some forty papers on a wide range of subjects, including rafts and canoes, utensils, weapons, stone artefacts, netting and basketry, throwing darts, footwear, mourning caps, fire-making, and the origin of the boomerang. He wrote also on the relationships of the cultures of Australia, Tasmania, Melanesia, Indonesia and Tierra del Fuego, and on trans-Pacific migrations. Davidson's periods of research in Australia were brief, but so little was then being done in the fields of art and material culture that his perceptive work in these neglected areas was above contemporary Australian standards and has proved of use to later prehistorians' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). A presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title to 'The Lord Durham, from the Author'. John George Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham (1792-1840) was a preeminent figure in early nineteenth-century British colonial policy, and a sometime close colleague of the author. He was chairman of the New Zealand Company in the 1820s (Torrens was a director), helped draft the Reform Bill of 1832 (earning the nickname 'Radical Jack'), and was appointed Governor-General of British North America (Canada) in 1838. There he served alongside Edward Gibbon Wakefield, who helped him prepare the important 'Report on the Affairs of British North America' (London, 1839), which was instrumental in delivering responsible government to Canada. Lord Durham's armorial bookplate and Lambton Castle library label are mounted on the front pastedown. Robert Torrens (1780-1864), 'officer of marines, political economist and colonization commissioner'; his 'economic writings are of much importance in the development of economic theory' (DNB). In the preface to this book, he writes: 'The art of Colonization is based upon the science of wealth; and the rules of the art are principles of the science naturally applied. In replying to objections, and in explaining the plan, and in unfolding the prospects, of the New Colony, the Author was naturally, and indeed, necessarily, led into discussions upon some of the fundamental doctrines of Political Economy. In some of these discussions, as it is believed, new, and not unimportant views have been opened'.
