Author and title gilt to citron calf in the second panel. All edges of the text-block speckled red. Fore and lower edges of the text-block untrimmed. Re-backed with the original back-strip laid down. Giovanni Battista Ferrari (1584-1655) was a Sienese Jesuit who, in addition to deep learning in Semitic languages (he was professor of Hebrew at the Jesuit College in Rome) managed the gardens of the Palazzo Barberini in Rome (now home to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica). There the famed gardens were joined by a library of botanical manuscripts, placing Ferrari at the heart of the horticultural revolution, with the land and resources of an important papal family (the dedicatee was Anna Colonna Barberini, niece of Pope Urban VIII). The twin stars of Ferrari's botanical output are the present work -- first published in Latin in 1633, but suppressed because of the references to the Accademia dei Lincei and their microscope -- and the Hesperides, the first European book on citrus. The Flora, here translated by Ludovico Aureli from Latin into "Tuscan," is one of the first floral works that prioritizes the aesthetic over the medicinal. The plates (for which the work is most celebrated), engraved after the great baroque Italian artists of the day (Cortona, Reni, Andrea Sacchi), all also in the employ of the Barberini, depict garden design, allegories of the gardener (including one particularly heroic slaying of a slug), tools, bouquets and individual species, labeled in ribbon banderoles. The present second issue lacks the errata (Yy6), the errors having been corrected. Henry Rogers Broughton (1900-1973), second baron, was the brother of the first Baron Fairhaven (Urban Huttleston Rogers Broughton), a title created for their father, Urban Hanlon Broughton, who died before it could be bestowed upon him. Their mother was the heiress of Henry H. Rogers, the stupendously wealthy oil magnate who became a senior executive of Standard Oil. Armed with their grandfather's American fortune, the Broughtons were able to buy and to maintain Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire. The second Baron...

Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: "To the modern student of ninth-century Arabic literature, Di'bil's influence as a critic and literary historian--"the poet of the learned and the learned of the poets"--is perhaps of even more interest than his verse. Mr. Zolondek has assembled materials for a reconstruction of Di'bil's long-lost yet widely quoted Book of the Poets. This medium-sized hard cover book was published by the University of Kentucky Press, dated 1961 and judging from the Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 61-6553, I am assuming that it is a First Edition. Please see the photos of the Preface and the Table of Contents for more insight into the book. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some minor along the spine including a small hole at its base. The hard covers are clean and bright with just a bit of light bumping at the base of the spine. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. There is some darkening on the endpapers, probably from the acids of the binding glues. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Cover and jacket illustrations by Mary Blair. Light bumping to the spine tips, else fine in a good plus dust jacket which has some heavy chipping to the front panel. This copy INSCRIBED "To Ronald Cooke with best wishes from Walt Disney" Laid in is a letter from Ronald Cooke who states that his great aunt Lillian was a Christian Science reader who read several times for Disney, was friends with Disney, and had two books inscribed by Disney to Cooke. There is no reference to Christian Science in either of the extensive biographies of Disney by Bob Thomas and Neal Gabler. It is known that there were at least three animators who were allowed to do "secretarial" presentation signatures for Disney. We have carefully examined the signature in this book, and we believe this signature is by Hank Porter. Although this is almost certainly not signed by Walt himself, it is an interesting association and an unusually nice copy. 0

In Yiddish. 200 pages. 247 x 176 mm. Illustrated. Elihu "Elye" Tenenholtz's copy. was born in the Russian hamlet of Azran, near the city of Rovne, in 1887 and came to the US at the age of ten. His first appearance in amateur Yiddish theatricals occurred in 1903, in staged readings of the works of Yiddish author Sholom Aleichem, the first person to do that. He augmented his theater appearances by writing for and editing a Yiddish satirical magazine under the pen-name "Moishe McCarthy". In 1916 he made the leap to the professional Yiddish stage and, befriended by the great doyenne Bessie Thomashevsky, helped her pen her memoirs, the first publication documenting a Yiddish actor's life. By 1920 he was appearing on both the Yiddish art stage with Maurice Schwartz and on Broadway, quickly rising to the top leadership of the Hebrew Actors' Union, the first arts union in America. In 1925 he co-founded a theater company with Celia Adler, half-sister of Luther Adler and "Method" teacher Stella Adler. In 1926 he was summoned to Hollywood and given a five-year contract at MGM. Like most Jewish actors, when he arrived in Hollywood he changed his name (choosing to bifurcate it into "Tenen Holtz"). During that time he regularly appeared in films alongside such stars as Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow and Marion Davies and under directors like King Vidor and Victor Fleming. This period would prove to be Tenenholtz's most prolific and would account for the majority of the 50+ films in which he would appear. While in Hollywood he helped jump start its fledgling Yiddish theater, founding a popular Yiddish theater company that included other transplanted Yiddish actors including Muni Weisenfreund (aka Paul Muni, father and son Rudolph Schildkraut and Joseph Schildkraut. When his contract at MGM ended, he moved over to Warner Brothers where he made films with Leslie Howard under the direction of Michael Curtiz. By the late 1930s the only calls he got were from Poverty Row studios, so Tenenholtz moved to nearby Monrovia and opened a chicken ranch. Though he would occasionally go back in front of the camera, he retired from film. By the time TV emerged, he landed a few roles on shows such as Perry Mason (1957) and Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955). He died in 1971.

A Fine copy in a Very Good Minus DJ. 4 lbs. 7 oz. Giovanni Battista di Iacopo di Rossi [1494-1540], known as Rosso Fiorentino, is considered one of the foremost exponents of Italian Mannerism. From the very first, highly significant works commissioned of him, his rebellious impulse against the constraints of a classicism then in crisis is clearly evident. An aggressive and iconoclastic spirit, Rosso Fiorentino made a fundamental contribution in his subsequent works to the richest and most disquieting current of the Maniera, proposing compositions that were tormented, convulsive, and animated by an expressionism bordering on caricature. The author sketches a personal profile of him within the pages of this volume, offering numerous insights into the art of one of the most audacious and poetic creators in the history of Western art.

Bound in early 20th c. quarter red Morocco and marbled boards (small repairs to head and foot of spine). A fine copy with scattered mild spotting. Complete with the folding plate of the banquet (signed "Mattheus Greuter excudit".) Two lines have been erased from the plate, as is the case in all copies I have examined. Manuscript foliation at head of first leaf. With the combined woodcut arms of Cosimo II and Maria Magdalena. Small woodcut of the Laocoön on leaf B4. Extremely rare. 1 copy traced in North America (Getty). First edition of these verses composed for a banquet, held in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence on 19 October 1608, celebrating the wedding of Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621) and Maria Magdalena, Archduchess of Austria (1589-1631). The songs are sung by the Nymph of the Arno, possibly the singer, dressed as a nymph, who sat upon a giant conch shell at the left-hand side of the dais -upon which the bride's banquet table was situated- with two musicians at her feet (one playing a harp). The engraved caption of the plate indicates which guests were seated at the bride's table, and the positions of the musicians, singers, and performers. There are musicians seated on suspended clouds and noble children dressed as soldiers performing mock jousts; on either side of the dais are two floats, one with the singing nymph mentioned above, the other with Apollo, also singing and accompanied by musicians, seated in a chariot upon a cloud. The plate was engraved by Matteus Greuter (1564/6-1638) "Questa stampa illustra il banchetto nuziale che ebbe luogo il 19 ottobre 1608 a Firenze nel Salone dei Cinquecento a Palazzo Vecchio per le nozze di Cosimo dei Medici con Maria Maddalena d'Austria. From the libraries of Lothar Schmid and Andrés Fernandez Pozo (Linde - No. 2178; Chicco / Sanvito, Lineamenti ., 554) First edition. I finali di Morphy is an important 19th-century chess work, published in Italy in 1879 as a supplement and special edition of the renowned Nuova Rivista degli Scacchi. This edition contains 32 endgame positions by Paul Morphy, each described on a single page featuring a diagram, the names of the players, and the task. This volume collects and analyzes the endgame phases of games played by Paul Morphy, the legendary American champion considered the strongest player of his era. Although Morphy was renowned for his overwhelming combinational attacks and opening sacrifices, he also possessed masterful endgame technique?qualities this publication aimed to share with Italian enthusiasts. As it was a limited edition from the late 19th century, the very few surviving original copies are now housed in prestigious private collections (such as the renowned DeLucia Chess Collection) or in the rare book sections of specialized libraries. Andrés Fernández Pozo (1845-1911) was a prominent Spanish-Cuban pharmacist and chess player, historically recognized as the most important figure in Asturian chess during the 19th century. He was born in Matanzas, Cuba, into a wealthy family of *indianos*?emigrants who had returned from the Americas?of Spanish origin. In 1863, he moved to Spain, where he studied pharmacy in Madrid before settling there permanently. He balanced his scientific profession with a prolific competitive chess career, leaving a lasting mark on the sporting history of Asturias. Lothar Maximilian Lorenz Schmid (10 May 1928 - 18 May 2013) was a German chess grandmaster. He was born in Radebeul near Dresden into a family who were the co-owners of the Karl May Press, which published the German Karl May adventure novels.
