90.83 CAD
1ST EDITION, 1ST PRINT. Book Condition, FINE/FINE. SIGNED & DATED (8.8.11) BY AUTHOR TO TITLE PAGE. The author's fourth collection of short stories. One of the most important literary events of the year 2008. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Presents in one brilliant and comprehensive volume ten new pieces and twenty-one of his best stories from his three previous collections. Prefaced with a brief essay by the author, they were all selected by Tobias Wolff with his long-time editor, Gary Fisketjon. The book has received enormous acclaim from fellow writers and critics: "A volume that belongs on everybody's shelf along with Hemingway's 'In Our Time', Salinger's 'Nine Stories', and the collected works of Flannery O'Connor, Raymond Carver, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, William Trevor, and Alice Munro. Wolff conjures stories that etch in your memory, which is to say, they become a part of you. This makes him, in my book, a very great writer indeed" (Marianne Wiggins). Apart from the fact that the new stories appear in book form for the first time, Tobias Wolff has made significant revisions to many of the classic stories. Wolff writes that he has never viewed any of his works as sacred texts. He has re-written what he considered "clumsy" passages and removed whole "superfluous" sections in many of the most beloved earlier pieces, making a comparison between the originals and their revised (and seemingly final) versions in this volume a rewarding and illuminating experience. This obstinate act of writing-as-rewriting is every writer's prerogative. Still, Tobias Wolff is legendary in his ruthlessness towards his own work. He disowned his first published novel, "Ugly Rumours", an elegant and accomplished debut, refused to have it published in the United States, and will not sign copies of it. A perfectionist to the core, it is therefore appropriate that Wolff should call his fourth collection a beginning. A "must-have" title for Tobias Wolff collectors.

The book shows just a tiny bit of toning (age discoloration) along top edge, is otherwise in Fine condition inside and out. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and is very clean. It shows some small chips and tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine, the deepest of which is about 1" and a few small insect scrapes here and there.
