Pour le moins, la manière poétique est ici toute de douceur et de discrétion, sans aspérités, solidement ancrée dans l'alexandrin le plus traditionnel. Certes, le métier du poète est sans failles ; certes, il affectionne des fantômes de femmes rôdant la nuit dans les rues, ombres folles, inquiétantes, dont témoignent des titres : Le Bouquet d'Ophélie (1929), Le Désir et les Ombres (1938), Aux sources de la nuit (1955)., tandis que d'autres compagnes, beaucoup plus concrètes, abandonnent volontiers leur mystère dans les bras protecteurs de l'amant : « Songe aux forces du rêve, aux faiblesses des sens, / Et, contre moi déjà tremblante et désarmée, / Glisse vers ces fureurs lentes que tu pressens. » Ailleurs, si la thématique persiste, il faut relever sur Chabaneix l'empreinte des poètes de l'école fantaisiste qu'il fréquenta et rejoignit : Paul-Jean Toulet, Francis Carco, Tristan Derême, pour ne citer que les plus connus. Mais leur fréquentation n'ébranlera pas profondément son mode élégiaque : de ceux qui, selon ses propres termes, « détestaient l'emphase », plus que les pointes humoristiques (« sourire des sentiments graves », dit Derême) ou que les nouveautés métriques, il retiendra le néo-classicisme et une certaine banalité thématique. Chabaneix ne méconnaît à l'occasion ni des mètres différents de l'alexandrin (octosyllabe, hexamètre, combinaison des deux) ni la contrerime à la manière de Toulet ou la contre-assonance de Derême dont voici un emploi : « Où sont les rêves d'avant guerre / Et les plus tendres des beaux jours ? / Ah ! nos baisers dans cette gare / Où se pressaient les voyageurs !
