885.18 CAD
First edition. Blue cloth with gilt. Near fine with a touch of rubbing on the spine gilt, some wear at the edges and a few subtle indentations on the front board. Inscribed to the astronomer who created dendrochronology: "To Dr. A.E. Douglas [sic] In appreciation of his interest in my work C.F. Jenkins 1/15/30." Jenkins, a co-inventor of the film projector (his early patents were acquired by Edison), pioneered a mechanical method of wireless transmission of synchronized sound and images, and opened the first broadcasting television station in the U.S. His mechanical technologies were eventually eclipsed by an electronic form of television, but to this day The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences presents a special Emmy Award in his honor. [Signed] [First Edition] Interesting Neighbors (signed) Jenkins, Oliver P. [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
410.18 CAD
Inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "Mrs. Anna Jenkins Dennis, from Oliver P. Jenkins, Stanford University, Calif., Feb. 16 1922." We imagine this is a family association copy, but can't say for sure. Uncommon signed. Oliver Peeble Jenkins earned his doctorate under ichthyologist David Starr Jordan in Indiana and then followed him to Stanford University to become one its first faculty members. He became the head of the department of Physiology and Histology at the Hopkins Marine Station and wrote books on fish and more. Interesting Neighbors is an early book of nature education. From the preface: "Despite the efforts of those who have great faith in the educational value of a knowledge of nature, there still remains much to be accomplished. Consequently, no one need apologize for the honest attempt, no matter how humble, to bring young children in contact with the wholesome intellectual stimulus and satisfying knowledge that comes from an acquaintance with the wonders of out of door life." What follows are very detailed descriptions of animal and plant lie, large and especially small, some of them starting out as short stories involving children but quickly becoming pure natural history. The first chapter, "The Magic House," is about oak galls, and the book has a California thrust, it seems, with a late chapter for example on "Bird Life on the Stanford Campus." Wonderfully illustrated by W.S. Atkinson. Small octavo in brown cloth. A very good copy with sharp corners, a few spots to cloth, a small ripple on the front pastedown and a few ripples on the front free endpaper that continue through opening pages. Hinges starting, but sound. No jacket. A handsome book that feels good in the hand (designed for small hands).

[Signed] [First Edition] The Cruise of the Petrel: A Story of 1812 HAINS, T. Jenkins [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
535.18 CAD
First edition. Gray cloth stamped in black in white with a picture of a frigate at sea illustrated by Florence Pearl Nosworthy. Very good with slight darkening of the spine, front hinge cracked, light foxing on endpapers, still an attractive copy. Inscribed by the author on the front fly: "To C.C. Converse, from his friend, T. Jenkins Hains, Sept 26, 03, Echo Boy, Yacht Edna." Seven relatable newspaper clippings laid in on preliminary pages causing some offsetting. Also, tipped in is a gelatin silver photograph of the author behind the ship's wheel, posing with a male and two female companions (one of which may be Amélie Troubetzkoy). An added bonus to this already phenominal item is a small piece of paper affixed to the page preceding the contents with the signature of the author and poet, Amélie Troubetzkoy. Thornton Jenkins Hains, 1866-1953, was an American novelist who found popularity with his nautical tales. His maternal grandfather, Admiral Thornton A. Jenkins, served in the War of 1812 and Hains used the logbooks he kept as inspiration for *The Cruise of the Petrel*. Hains is mostly remembered for his part in the "Regatta Murder", the killing of William Annis by Hains' brother, Peter C. Hains. Peter's wife was having an affair with Annis and it was Thornton that told his brother this information. This resulted in Peter murdering Annis at the Ladies' Regatta while his brother stood watch. Although not convicted of any crime the event soiled his reputation and he adopted the pen name Mayn Clew Garnett from then on. A scarce and intriguing copy of an interesting title.
