Apparent first edition (NAP, 1937 on the title page of Volume I, 1938 on the title page of Volume II). Very rare two-volume set, I saw only one other for sale anywhere on the Internet. My set is in excellent condition, quite surprising given its age. You can see the covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spines of both volumes is nicely bright. The cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The cover corners are also in excellent condition, no rubbing except for one speck-sized spot at each of the bottom corners of Volume II. The page edges of both volumes look very good. The pages in both volumes are solidly bound. The covers are nicely, tightly bound. The pages are exceptionally clean in both volumes. Scrolling through, I didn't find any instances of soiling in either. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases. There is a very light smooth crease off the outer edge of the title page of Volume II. There are no markings in either volume. There is a tiny bookseller label above the bottom corners of the front inside covers in each volume. In one it is green and in the other it is maroon. Interestingly, the labels read 'Harold Reeves, Books & Music, London, England.' There are no other attachments of any kind in either volume. In Part II of Volume I, some of the entries have a tiny pencil dash beside them on the blank margin. They could be erased if one chose to. There are no pencil marks in Part I of Volume I. There is no penciling anywhere in Volume II. Volume II has 318 pages, Volume I has 239 pages. 'Lionel Roy McColvin CBE, was a British librarian. He has been described as 'the dominant figure in British public librarianship' in the mid-20th century and a 'world leader' in the profession of librarianship.'

Stated First Edition. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. The inscription is on the mustard-colored front end paper. It reads: 'With best wishes, Martin Bookspan, 3/12/69.' You can see the covers in the photos. They are very clean. There are two light vertical creases on the spine. There's a little crinkling at the spine ends, a few speck-sized white spots of rubbing at the bottom edge of the spine. There is a 1/4" space between the top edge of the spine and the textblock, the book is a thick 511 pages long. The gilt lettering on the spine is still bright. The cover edges are in excellent shape. The two bottom corners each have a tiny spot of rubbing. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is quite solid. The pages are nicely tight with only one exception, there's a thin space with a little bit of webbing showing at the juncture between page 130 and 131 where the book was probably left lying open. Both pages are firmly bound from top to bottom. The covers are also nicely, tightly bound. The pages are very clean. Scrolling through, I didn't find any conspicuous soiling. There is a group of pages with a mild crease just below the tip of their top corners. I didn't see any other creasing. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And Mr. Bookspan's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. The dust jacket is worn and thus only rated Fair. It has a small loss off the front top edge, the rear top edge, the top edge of the spine, and the front bottom front edge. As you can see there's also a fair amount of scuffing and scratching, as well as a few tears. The flaps look okay. There is an outline of what was probably a price sticker off the bottom edge of the front flap and the book's price is clipped off at the top edge of the front flap. There's also a little bit of spotting. I have the jacket in a fitted protective cover. 'Martin Bookspan was an American announcer, commentator, and author. He was the announcer on the PBS series Live from Lincoln Center from its beginnings in 1976 until his retirement in 2006. For years he was also announcer for the Live from the Met series on PBS (which eventually became The Metropolitan Opera Presents). Bookspan inaugurated Live from Lincoln Center. He became known for his extensive knowledge of classical music. He was also noted for his ability to provide anecdotes to cover any unanticipated breaks, such as when the New York Philharmonic completed their performance around 18 minutes ahead of their apportioned airtime. In an earlier incident in 1959, he filled in a ten-minute interruption in Rudolf Serkin's performance after the pianist broke the pedal lyre.'

The Harmony Edition was bottled at a cask strength 52.2% ABV and comes with a charming presentation box. We're no music experts, but we're pretty sure it's modelled after a piano case. Lovely. Distillery Information The distillery is situated to the East of the village of Lochranza at the North of the island and takes its water from the Loch na Davie. Founded in 1993, by Chivas Brothers’ retiring managing director, Harold Currie, the distillery is the only one on the Isle of Arran since the most recent legally run distillery, ‘Lagg’, was closed in 1837. Mr Currie stylized the buildings with the intention of giving them a much more traditional, classic appearance. During the early stages of building, work was briefly interrupted when a pair of Golden Eagles, nesting in the crags above the distillery, tended to their young. The eagles can be seen, to this day, from the courtyard at the distillery. Production began on the 17th August 1995. A year later and a one year old was released, of course not technically a whisky, it was released as ‘Arran 1 Year Old Spirit’, and showed great promise for a spirit still in its proverbial adolescence. The core expressions include a ten year old, officially released in 2006, and a cask-strength, the ominously named ‘100 Proof’. Yearly single cask special editions are released, finished in either sherry or bourbon butts. Some interesting finishes have also been released, including a Bordeaux, a port and a Calvados.

Inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper. 112 pages preceded by advertisements and 6 plates. 5.5" x 8". Dr. Samuel Sheldon Fitch (18011876) remarks, in the introduction to this treatise on heart diseases and their cures, that such illnesses have, thus far in his career, been treated as hopeless and incurable. He offers evidence and case studies to the contrary. Though it reads as a fair amount of self-promotion, the medical advice is offered in earnest, not only in the author's efforts to find cures but also in his emphasis on giving patients hope. .

Small "duplicate" ink stamp of library on front flyleaf. First Edition. SIGNED BY KURT GOLDSTEIN to Alan Gregg: "Dr. Alan Gregg/ with special compliments/ Dec. 1948 Kurt Goldstein" (see photo). Alan Gregg spent his career at the Rockefeller Foundation. Although Alan Gregg is not mentioned by name, in his Acknowledgments Goldstein writes: "I had several occasions to thank the Rockefeller Foundation for continued support of my studies in general. I want to acknowledge my deep appreciation again particularly for the fund granted for my research in speech disturbances." There is a pencil note on the verso of the title page, as well as on the front pastedown, indicating this copy was the gift of Alan Gregg. As to its next owner: in 1955 Ralph E. Griswold purchased this book at a Stanford Library Sale. His ink note on the front pastedown reads: "Ralph E. Griswold/ November 15, 1955/ (Stanford Library Sale)." At that time he was 21 years old and a recent graduate in physics at Stanford. Quoting from Wikipedia: Griswold "was a computer scientist known for his research into high-level programming languages and symbolic computation. His language credits include the string processing language SNOBOL, SL5, and Icon. . . . He attended Stanford University, receiving a bachelor's degree in physics, then an M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering. Griswold went to Bell Labs in 1962, where he studied ideas for non-numerical computation. SNOBOL was the outcome; it was a radically different language in its time and still is. He became the head of the Labs' Programming Research and Development department in 1967. In 1971, he was hired by the University of Arizona to be its first professor of computer science, subsequently organized the department, and was its head until 1981. While at Arizona, Griswold developed Icon. The earlier Ratfor implementation of Icon was discarded and the language rewritten from scratch in C and UNIX. . . . 'As one of the founders of the Bell Labs software culture that spawned UNIX, C, and many other essential contributions to modern software, Ralph Griswold brought to his academic research not only brilliance, but also experience and a value system that demanded that research ideas be tested by fire and proven useful and usable by real users, not just good-looking diagrams in academic papers.'
