Brazeal ("Bra")." Brailsford Reese Brazeal (1903-1981) was a prolific economist, receiving his undergraduate from Morehouse College in 1927 and completing a master's degree in economics from Columbia in 1928. Upon graduation, Brazeal was hired as an economics instructor by Dr. John Hope, Morehouse College's first Black president. Hope's son, John Hope II, was a sophomore at Morehouse College when Brazeal joined the faculty in 1928. The Hope family remained close with Brazeal as his career developed, as Dr. Hope remained President of Morehouse until his passing in 1936, and Brazeal retired from the college in 1972 as Dean of Academics. Both men were fervent supporters of civil rights in various capacities; Hope was a founding member of both the Niagara Movement and the NAACP. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters was based on Brazeal's doctoral dissertation research on the efforts of train-car porters to form America's first Black labor union. It is an essential reference for labor history, economic history, and race relation studies even today.

John Uri Lloyd (1849 - 1936) was an American pharmacist and leader of the eclectic medicine movement who was influential in the development of pharmacognosy, ethnobotany, economic botany, and herbalism. He also wrote novels set in northern Kentucky. His most popular novel was the science fiction or allegorical Etidorhpa, or, the end of the earth: the strange history of a mysterious being and the account of a remarkable journey (1895), illustrated by J. Augustus Knapp. First distributed privately, it was later printed in eighteen editions. Translated into seven languages, it was widely read in Europe as well as the United States. Theodore Brown Hapgood (1871 - c. 1938) was a prominent Massachusetts illustrator, printmaker, sculptor and designer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, he studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. During his career Hapgood worked extensively in the book arts, both illustrating fine books and designing book covers and ex-libris plates. Known for fine craftsmanship Hapgood's art first came to national attention in the American Art Nouveau period of the late 1890's. During this important era he was commissioned to design posters for The Inland Printer, The Century and Little, Brown and Company. In the early twentieth century Theodore Hapgood established himself as both a leading bookplate designer and as a sculptor. COLI1897DKLX - 03/26 - HK3352

Black cloth. 757pp. Illustrated. Pictorial slipcase. Limited to 500 copies signed by the author. Occasionally a spark of inspiration can become the catalyst for transition. Just such an occasion took place with the construction of Thompson Speedway in 1940, a five-eighth mile banked oval track, dubbed "The Indianapolis of the East". A road course joined to the oval in 1952 enlarged the track to form the first privately-owned complex where sports car drivers could race safely. These two volumes tell the story of the ground-breaking racetrack and detail the drivers and cars that participated in the races. They are profusely illustrated with contemporary photographs showing well-known drivers including Briggs Cunningham, Bill Lloyd and Lance Reventlow. The books are in very good condition with some light marking to the cloth of Vol. 2 at the bottom. The jackets are fine and unworn. The slipcase is very good with a small abrasion to the bottom rear cover. Foreign postage will be extra on this heavy set weighing over 12 pounds.

Don't let anyone else drive off with this one! About AVIONS VOISIN / Voisin Luxury Automobiles (from Wikipedia): ******Avions Voisin was a French luxury automobile brand established by Gabriel Voisin in 1919 which produced cars until 1939. Its founder, Gabriel B. Voisin, was an aviation pioneer and manufacturer who in 1919 started producing cars using Knight-type sleeve valve engines at Issy-les-Moulineaux, an industrial suburb to the southwest of Paris. Voisin's designs made extensive use of light alloys, especially aluminum. One early design was the Voisin Laboratoire Grand Prix car of 1923; one of the first cars ever to use monocoque chassis construction and a small radiator mounted propeller to drive the cooling pump. Voixin cars prioritized lightness, central weight distribution, capacious luggage boxes and distinctively angular lines. The 1930s models with underslung chassis were strikingly low. Voisin automobiles used sleeve valve (Knight) engines until some later models switched to Graham 3.5 litre engines. The Knight engines included: inline four; inline six; inline twelve and a seven-cylinder radial. A 1931 Voisin C20 Mylord Demi-Berline won Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance Best of Show for 2009 and subsequently sold in 2010 Amelia Island sale for $2,750,000. A 1935 Avions Voisin C25 Aérodyne was sold at auction in Pebble Beach, California in 2013 for $1,925,000. In the 2005 movie Sahara, the car stolen from the dictator is a 1936 Avions Voisin C-28. Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt recognizes the car and says "It's a 1936 Avions Voisin. Six-cylinder sleeve valve engine, you know there were only six of these ever made."****** Acquired from the estate of MARK KETCHAM, a well-known rare sports car collector, vintage racing car broker (Ketcham Imports), and winery owner (Ketcham Estate, Healdsburg, California).

Liberally illustrated with b/w photo plates. Foreword by David Brown. Detailed history of Aston Martin's road and racing cars from 1921 up to 1957. The Book is in Very Good condition, some spotting to endpapers and a few small marks on the boards; the jacket is also Very Good with some light wear mainly to the head of the spine. An excellent resource, and certainly the most comprehensive book on the early history of this great British performance car manufacturer. Eric Thompson was a racing driver who raced for the Aston Martin works team at Le Mans from 1950 to 1953, coming third overall in 1951. Peter Clark also drove for Aston, racing a DB2 at Le Mans in 1951 and 1952. Mort Goodall was the founder of the Aston Martin Owner's Club and a long time Aston racer driving at Le Mans ten times. Angela Abecassis, née Brown, was the daughter of David Brown who owned the company from 1947 to 1972 and lent his initials to the most legendary series of Aston Martin cars; she married racing driver George Abecassis and raced a DB3 herself in the 1950's. Liz Thompson was Eric's wife, she worked for the Aston Martin racing team in the 1950's as a time keeper. Overall an interesting collection of signatories, all closely associated with Aston in the early days of John Wyer and David Brown.
