This copy SIGNED with a quotation by Coffin on the front free endpaper in the year of publication: "History in its largest sense is the philosophy of human action. Charles Carleton Coffin. Boston April 24, 1895." The ownership signature of one Marion P. Bridgman (wife of Sidney Bridgman, a leading Northampton bookseller) is just above the quotation. Coffin had been a leading newspaper columnist during the Civil War, and gained uncommonly good access to Union generals due to special permission from General Grant to move freely in Army encampents, and even on the battlefield. His dispatches from numerous battles, including Gettysburg, were usually among the first to reach the public.
