[First Edition] A Trip to Polaris or 264 Trillion Miles in an Aeroplane Charles S. Muir [Used - Fine] [Hardcover]
85.18 CAD
18mo. in light blue cloth lettered and illustrated in black with design of a bi-plane cruising above the Little Dipper. 63 pp. One full page illustration. Fine. Dedicated to the author's 10-year-old son, a teaching tool about astronomy disguised as science fiction for young people. The little book begins with the putting of oxygen tanks aboard an aeroplane in preparation for trip of 264 trillion miles to the North Star (Polaris in Uursa Minor). As thr journey proceeds, each chapter describes a different planet (there were only 8 known at the time), the Sun and the Moon. After leaving our solar system, the aeroplane passes the major stars--Alpha Centuri, Sirius, Orion, and others that man has named. Finally the aeroplane reaches Polaris; there are fresh oxygen tanks waiting for it there but the delivery breaks the propeller and the plane falls down, down, down until (spoiler alert!) the pilot falls out of bed, striking his head, and seeing all the stars visited in the dream.

[First Edition] Sample Survey Methods and Theory, Vol. II (1953) Hansen Hurwitz Madow Hansen, Morris H.; Hurwitz, William N.; Madow, William G.
95.13 CAD
This is the theoretical volume of the landmark two-volume work that established the mathematical foundations of modern survey sampling. Sample Survey Methods and Theory, Volume II develops the rigorous probability theory underlying stratified, cluster, and multi-stage sampling designs, with detailed derivations, proofs, and variance estimators that shaped mid-century statistical practice in government, economics, and social science research. Published in 1953 as part of the Wiley Publications in Statistics series, this volume reflects the authors' work at the U.S. Census Bureau and leading academic institutions, and it remains frequently cited in the history of sampling theory. The book is handsomely produced in the classic Wiley cloth style, with clear mathematical typography and extensive indexing. This particular copy carries period academic provenance, including a student name, room number, homework and reading assignments, and handwritten mathematical and statistical calculations throughout. The annotations are thoughtful and instructional in nature, reflecting active scholarly use rather than casual marking, and they do not obscure the printed text. A solid, historically interesting working copy of a foundational statistical text. Very Good Condition. Firm binding; original cloth present with visible spine wear, rubbing, and fraying at the head and tail. Interior pages remain supple and readable. No missing pages. First Edition, First Printing. Copyright page dated 1953 with no later printing statements. Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 53-8112. Standard Wiley practice of the period did not include number lines. Morris H. Hansen, William N. Hurwitz, and William G. Madow were pioneering statisticians whose work at the U.S. Census Bureau and in academia laid the groundwork for modern probability-based survey sampling. Hansen, in particular, is widely regarded as a central architect of twentieth-century sampling methodology, and this two-volume set remains one of the most influential treatments of the subject ever published. This copy is Volume two only.

It was likewise clear that the Russians were not strong enough to reconquer the peoples of the Western borderlands who had declared their independence. Events had shown that the revolution was not spreading of its own accord into the Western countries. In this book are detailed the making and execution of the new strategy employed by the Communists to promote its spread in the West. This and the companion volume, SOVIET RUSSIA AND THE EAST, 1920~1927, tell the story of eight years during which the Russian communist leaders experimented with carrying on ostensibly normal diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations with the noncommunist powers, while at the same time promoting difficulties between and within the same powers through the Communist International. Mrs. Eudin and Mr. Fisher here present the materials which best show the genesis of Soviet foreign policy objectives in the West, the theories on which these objectives were based, the main lines of action that emerged from the theories, and the chief tactical shifts that occurred during this critical period. They have tied the documents together with appropriate background information, to form the whole into an integrated narrative. As the official diplomatic documents of the Soviet government reveal only one side of Soviet policy, the authors have included other documents illustrating the unofficial and extralegal activities throughout the West of the various organs of the Russian Communist Party and the Communist International. These are most revealing when studied together, for the officials of the Soviet government were, at the same time, leaders in the party and dominating figures in the newly formed Comintern. The period covered by these two volumes represents Soviet Russia's first attempt at formulating and carrying out a policy of "peaceful coexistence." The timeliness of the problems with which the books are ultimately concerned hardly needs to be pointed up. As the Communists put it: "The globe is divided into two camps: In the one camp we find the U.S.S.R. and revolutionary China; in the other the entire capitalist world. . ....

Boston April 24, 1895." The ownership signature of one Marion P. Bridgman (wife of Sidney Bridgman, a leading Northampton bookseller) is just above the quotation. Coffin had been a leading newspaper columnist during the Civil War, and gained uncommonly good access to Union generals due to special permission from General Grant to move freely in Army encampents, and even on the battlefield. His dispatches from numerous battles, including Gettysburg, were usually among the first to reach the public.

'A classic of political economy that traces the influence of religious thought on capitalism. In one of the true classics of twentieth-century political economy, R. H. Tawney investigates the way religion has moulded social and economic practice. He tracks the influence of religious thought on capitalist economy and ideology since the Middle Ages, shedding light on the question of why Christianity continues to exert a unique role in the marketplace. The book offers an incisive analysis of the morals and mores of contemporary Western culture. In tough, muscular, richly varied prose, Tawney tells an absorbing and meaningful story. Today, the dividing line between the spheres of religion and the secular is shifting, and Religion and the Rise of Capitalism is more pertinent than ever.' (Blurb from the Verso press reissue).
