The First Edition of Daphne du Maurier's "The Flight of the Falcon" states "First Edition in the United States of America" on the copyright page. Published by Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York, 1965. By 1965, Daphne du Maurier needed no introduction. Rebecca had made her one of the most famous novelists in the English-speaking world, and The Flight of the Falcon was marketed in exactly those terms, "In the great tradition of Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and The Scapegoat, a new masterpiece of haunting atmosphere and hypnotic suspense." This is a du Maurier novel of obsession and identity: a young Italian courier becomes entangled in a murder in Rome, a woman who inexplicably stirs his memory. His search for her identity leads him back to Ruffano, the hill town he fled as a boy during the retreating German army's final days in Italy. It's a town haunted by a 500-year-old legend of cruelty, and by something far more immediate and personal. The atmosphere is pure du Maurier: beautiful, unsettling, and suffused with the Gothic dread she perfected across four decades. This copy carries a lovely Christmas inscription: "Dear Grandy, We hope you enjoy this book, and have a very Merry Christmas. Love Always, Robyn & Mike," dated December 25, 1965, gifted the same year of publication. First Edition in the United States of America. Copyright © 1965 by Daphne du Maurier. Published by Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York. LC Card 65-10613. 301 pages. Jacket by Casey Lubin. Serialized in Good Housekeeping Magazine. Book is in Very Good condition, with deep rust/orange cloth boards over green cloth, binding tight and square throughout, pages toned throughout with age (as expected for a 60-year-old copy), otherwise clean and unmarked except for the Christmas inscription on the FFEP. Dust jacket is Good with warm ochre/gold tones with Italian cityscape illustration, original price ($4.95) unclipped on front flap, significant chipping and splitting at spine crown, toning and soiling to rear panel, otherwise design intact and colors present. Protected in mylar. Condition: Very Good / Good DJ A genuine first edition of a du Maurier Gothic thriller, given as a Christmas gift the year it was published.

[First Edition] The Flight of the Falcon du Maurier, Daphne [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
56.18 CAD
The Flight of the Falcon by Daphne du Maurier. Doubleday & Co., Inc., 1965. Book Condition / Dust Jacket Condition : Book: Very Good +; Red cloth boards clean and structurally sound, with light surface rubbing and mild edgewear at the extremities. Spine lettering present but somewhat dulled, still legible. Binding remains tight and square. Pages are clean and unmarked, with light, even age-toning consistent with mid-1960s paper stock. No stains, no foxing observed in the text block. Ownership marking: Small, simple ink doodle on the front free endpaper (upper corner), unobtrusive but present. No dust jacket (see photos) Printing identification note: The copyright page lacks a number line, which is consistent with Doubleday's mid-1960s practice. Based on publisher, date, and absence of later printing statements, this is treated as a first American edition. Set in the fictional Italian city of Ruffano, The Flight of the Falcon is one of Daphne du Maurier's most psychologically complex novels, blending political intrigue, moral ambiguity, and obsessive love. Against the backdrop of a decaying aristocratic order and simmering revolutionary tension, du Maurier explores power, loyalty, and the destructive pull of myth and memory. Written with her characteristic atmospheric intensity, the novel stands apart from her more famous Gothic romances, offering a darker, more philosophical examination of identity and control. A compelling work from the later period of du Maurier's career, prized by collectors of her fiction and readers of literary suspense.

These famous opening lines later became one of the most famous opening words ever recorded in Alfred Hitchcock's Oscar-winning 1940 film of the same name. [Signed] [First Edition] More Daphne Du Maurier Than You Shake A TV Remote At Daphne Du Maurier and others [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
165.13 CAD
This grouping of books -- eight in total -- includes 4 books by the acclaimed writer -- two biographies, an attractive signed photo book about her home, and an eighth book that was written by her grandfather, George Du Maurier. From what I can tell, at least four of the books are first editions. The two newest books are very nice matching later editions of two of her biggest sellers: "Rebecca" and "Jamaica Inn." They have dark green boards with gilt on the front, back and spine and were published in the 1950s by The International Collectors Library of Garden City, New York. Rebecca is dated from 1938, two years after the first U.S. edition. An online source says this edition dates to 1954. Jamaica Inn is dated 1936 and I'm 99 percent certain this was printed in the 1950s. Previous owner wrote her name on both books and there are gummed ownership labels on both books. A newspaper clipping about the author selling her home in England has been taped to the front free endpaper of Rebecca. A first U.S. edition of Du Maurier's novel "Rule Britannia" (1973) with a good dust jacket and some discoloration along the spine of the front free endpaper is included. Once again, there's a book label from the previous owner. First edition of "The Rebecca Notebook and Other Memories" with the signed name of previous owner also is included. Book appears to be flawless with a jacket that shows its age (published in 1980). Once again, book is in excellent condition with a jacket that has some bumps and bruises. First edition of the biography "Manderley Forever" by Tatiana De Rosney is in this group. The beige boards have a slight discoloration at the bottom and the jacket seems to have residue from a gummed label on the back cover over the bar code and above it. It's difficult to see but you can feel it when you run your hand over the jacket. I tried to use a solvent to remove it but it didn't seem to work and I thought I would only maked it worse. The other biography is subtitled "The Secret Life of the Renowned Storyteller." It's in extremely good condition -- both book and jacket -- and it's a clearly stated first edition. Both bios have quite a few photos. The seventh book is primarily a photo book -- a signed first edition -- printed in London and signed by the author, Hilary Macaskill, "For Sheila" on the title page. Large format -- roughly 10.25 inches square -- by 144 pages. Pac ked with exceptional content and photos. The eighth book in this grouping is a novel from 1892,"Peter Ibbetson" by George Du Maurier, Daphne's paternal grandfather. Green boards with black and gold on the cover and the spine. Book is obviously out of square and the top of the front leans forward. Decent condition for its age with some age-related yellowing of the pages.
[First Edition] Rule Britannia - Daphne du Maurier - 1972 First Edition/First Printing Presentation Copy Daphne du Maurier [Used - Near fine]
160.18 CAD
Rule Britannia by Daphne du Maurier (Doubleday & Company, 1972) is offered here in its First American Edition / First Printing, made especially desirable as a publisher's presentation copy. This state is identified by the printed line 'With compliments of Doubleday & Company, Inc.' on the front free endpaper - a feature produced in very small quantities and given only to reviewers, booksellers, and select industry recipients. Presentation copies form a recognized collectible category, as they represent the publisher's own curated distribution of first-print sheets. Du Maurier's final novel imagines a politically charged near-future in which the US-UK alliance ('USUK') erupts into local conflict in Cornwall, blending satire, tension, and character-driven drama. The dust jacket was designed by Paul Bacon, a major figure in American graphic design and creator of the famed 'Big Book Look.' The book is in Near Fine condition with clean red cloth boards, bright gilt lettering, a tight binding, and clean, unmarked text aside from faint endpaper offsetting. The Very Good dust jacket remains unclipped at $6.95 and shows mild rubbing, light creasing at extremities, and a few short-closed tears, but retains strong color and overall presentation. The copyright page states 'First Edition in the United States of America,' confirming this as a true first printing. Scarce as a presentation copy and appealing in condition, this example stands well above typical first editions of the title.

Producer: Domaine G&J Bott Vintage: 2021 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Syrah Country/Region: France, Rhone The palate is an explosion of delicate flavors, nice and delightful mouthfeel. Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Domaine Graeme & Julie Bott is a small wine estate in the Northern Rhône Valley. A range of red and white wines are made from several appellations within the region. Julie Bott was born in the region, while Graeme Bott is from New Zealand. They met while working for Stephane Ogier, a producer in Côte Rôtie, and decided to create their own wine estate. Graeme also has experience working in the Hawke's Bay and Waiheke Island regions of New Zealand, plus the Canberra region of Australia. He regards Tim Kirk of Clonakilla as his winemaking mentor Together they planted Viognier and Syrah vines in granite and schist-based sites within the appellations of Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph and in the commune Seyssuel. The latter lies to the north of Côte Rotie and Ampuis, on the other, eastern, bank of the river. The wines from here are currently classified as IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, though the area is expected to gain AOP status soon. The first three vintages were made in the garage of Julie and Graeme's home among the vineyards of Condrieu. They have now expanded to a cellar in Ampuis, but production volumes are still very small. The regular range currently begins with the First Flight Viognier and Syrah, which are classified as Vin de France. The fruit comes from parcels at the edge of the Côte Rotie / Ampuis and Condrieu zones. The top white wine is a Condrieu, the original, classic expression of Viognier. There is also Crozes-Hermitage Blanc and white Saint-Joseph Blanc. Both are mainly Roussanne, combined with Marsanne. The First Flight cuvée and a Côte Rôtie are the bookends of a quartet of red wines made from Syrah. The others are a Crozes-Hermitage and a Saint Joseph.
[First Edition] TRILBY, A NOVEL GEORGE DU MAURIER [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
64.7 CAD
FIRST EDITION. Good copy in the original gilt-blocked decorated cloth. Panel edges somewhat dulled and dust-toned as with age. Corners sharp with an overall tight, bright and clean impression. Physical description: Volume in 8°,19 cm; (X),447,(5) pages. With 121 illustrations by the Autor. "Trilby" is a sensation novel by George du Maurier and one of the most popular novels of its time. Published serially in Harper's New Monthly Magazine from January to August 1894, it was published in book form on 8 September 1894 and sold 200,000 copies in the United States alone. Trilby is set in the 1850s in an idyllic bohemian Paris. Though Trilby features the stories of two English artists and a Scottish artist, one of the most memorable characters is Svengali, a rogue, masterful musician and hypnotist. Trilby, the novel's heroine, is a young orphan girl working in Paris as an artist's model and laundress; all the men in the novel are in love with her. The relationship between Trilby and Svengali forms only a small, though crucial, portion of the novel, which is mainly an evocation of a milieu. Lucy Sante wrote that the novel had a "decisive influence on the stereotypical notion of bohemia" and that it "affected the habits of American youth, particularly young women, who derived from it the courage to call themselves artists and 'bachelor girls,' to smoke cigarettes and drink Chianti." The novel has been adapted to the stage several times; one of these featured the lead actress wearing a distinctive short-brimmed hat with a sharp snap to the back of the brim. The hat became known as the trilby and went on to become a popular men's clothing item in the United Kingdom throughout various parts of the 20th century, subsequently gaining popularity elsewhere and seeing a resurgence in popularity in the early 1980s, when it was marketed to both men and women to capitalise on a retro fashion trend.

Liner notes for the revolution: the intellectual life of black feminist sound. Cambridge, Massachusetts: The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 2021, stated First Printing, viii, 598pp., . "Daphne A. Brooks explores more than a century of music archives to examine the critics, collectors, and listeners who have determined perceptions of African American women on stage and in the recording studio. Liner Notes for the Revolution offers a startling new perspective on these acclaimed figures--a perspective informed by the overlooked contributions of other Black women concerned with the work of their musical peers. Zora Neale Hurston appears as a sound archivist and a performer, Lorraine Hansberry as a queer Black feminist critic of modern culture, and Pauline Hopkins as America's first Black female cultural intellectual. Brooks tackles the complicated racial politics of blues music recording, collecting, and rock and roll music criticism. She makes lyrical forays into the blues pioneers Bessie Smith and Mamie Smith, as well as fans who became critics, like the record-label entrepreneur and writer Rosetta Reitz. In the twenty-first century, pop superstar Janelle Monae's liner notes are recognized for their innovations, while celebrated singers Cecile McLorin Salvant, Rhiannon Giddens, and Valerie June take their place as serious cultural historians. Above all, Liner Notes for the Revolution reads Black female musicians and entertainers as intellectuals. At stake is the question of who gets to tell the story of Black women in popular music and how" - CONTENTS: Side A.
