Includes Praise for Facing the Mountain; List of Other Books by Daniel James Brown; Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quote by Rudy Tokiwa; Foreword; Author's Note; Prologue; Epilogue; Acknowledgments; Resources; Notes; Photo Credits and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps. "This is a masterwork of American history that will change the way we look at World War II. You don't just read a Daniel James Brown story - you go there. Facing the Mountain is lump-in-the-throat territory, page after page." - Adam Makos, author of A Higher Call. "This book's breadth and depth are unparalleled as it poignantly traces the Japanese American thread in the rich fabric of America. We meet compelling individuals, witness war's horrors, and celebrate moments of triumph of the human spirit. The author vividly describes communities confronting prejudice with resilience and patriotism, surviving, and ultimately having the opportunity to thrive." - Terry Shima, T/4, 442nd Regimental Combat Team. "From the author of The Boy s in the Boat comes a gripping World War II saga of patriotism and courage - the story of the special Japanese American army unit that overcame brutal odds in Europe while their families were incarcerated back home, and of a young man who refused to surrender his constitutional rghts, even if it meant imprisonment. Some came from farms and small towns and big cities across the mainland of the United States, and others came from Hawaii. Their parents taught them to embrace both their Japanese heritage and the ways of their American homeland. They faced bigotry, yet they believed in their bright futures as American citizens. But within days of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the FBI was banging on their doors, ransacking their houses, and locking up their fathers. And within months, many of these young men and their families would themselves be living behind barbed wire. Facing the Mountain is an unforgettable chronicle of wartime America and the battlefields of Europe. Based on Daniel James Brown's extensive interviews with the families of the protagonists as well as deep archival research, it portrays the kaleidoscopic journey of four Japanese American families and their second-generation young men - the Nisei - who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France, Germany, and Italy, where they were asked to do the near impossible in often suicidal missions. But this is more than a war story. Brown also tells the story of these soldiers' parents, immigrants who made their way in America only to be forced to shutter the businesses they had spent decades building, surrender their homes for pennies on the dollar, and submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil. Woven throughout is the chronicle of a brave young man, Gordon Hirabayashi, one of a cadre of...

[First Edition] The War of the Worlds Wells, H.G. [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover] [First Edition] The War of the Worlds Wells, H.G. [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover] 7535.18 CAD Octavo. viii, 303pp. [+ 16 pp. of publisher's ads at the rear]. Grey buckram boards with black lettering on the front cover and spine. Embossed publisher's device in black, on the back cover. A beautiful and vibrant copy of the first printing of H.G. Wells' groundbreaking science-fiction classic. This highly influential work serves as the origin of the modern trope of the Alien invasion in fiction and is its seminal work. Although originally serialized in Pearson's Magazine in the UK (and Cosmopolitan in the US), between 1895 and 1897, it was first published in its full and complete form in this single-volume edition by William Heinemann. Our copy is notable as being the very first state of the first printing as it includes the 16pp. of publisher ads at the rear, dated autumn 1897 [mdcccxcvii] (Currey, state A). A few pages of this section of ads remain unopened. There are also publisher's ads on the verso of the half-title as well. Only the words "all rights reserved" are printed on the verso of the title page. Binding in wonderful condition with its original grey cloth still very vibrant, and only the most minimal of wear to extremities. A few instances of extremely minor stains and smudges to the covers, with a small section lightly restored on the front cover (hardly noticeable). Edges of book block with a very few minor instances of chipping, resulting from an unsteady hand in the cutting, during the opening of pages. Light abrasion to the center interior edge of both the front of back boards, which is not very noticable. Interior extremely clean, with a very few minor instances of foxing or stains to the margins. Book block tight. Binding in very good+ to near fine, interior in very good+ condition overall. Original bookseller's tiny sticker from the period, at the top left corner of the interior front cover: "R. Ingalton Drake, Eton". Bibliographic references: Currey, state A.; Bleiler, The Early Years, 2331.
