[Signed] [First Edition] Happy Birthday To You!, purchased and inscribed for a young mother in 1963 at a bookshop one mile from Dr. Seuss's La Jolla,
785.18 CAD
This first edition, early printing, was inscribed by Dr. Seuss for a young mother in 1963 at a bookshop one mile from Dr. Seuss's home in La Jolla, California. It was acquired by us directly from the person for whom this book was purchased, to whom it was inscribed, and whose family enjoyed this book for three generations. This copy is inscribed on the lower left corner of the front free endpaper verso in four lines "for JiLL with Best Wishes Dr. Seuss" with a characteristic Dr. Seuss squiggle between the valediction and signature. ConditionAs Dr. Seuss surely intended when he signed this copy for a young mother in 1963, this book has been read, a lot, and then some more. If you seek a pristine, "trophy" copy, this book is not for you. Instead, it is imbued with provenance and story. This copy is an early printing (definitively 1963 or before since that was the year it was purchased and inscribed). Both the book and its dust jacket are identical to the first printing with the sole exception of missing white dots just below the text in the background at the foot of the verso of the 19th leaf. Per Younger and Hirsch, "there are 6 or 7 white spots that do not appear in later printings and which do appear on the original artwork. Later printings with the white dots removed have been seen with the first issue dust wrapper" This copy is one such.Condition is good plus in a very good dust jacket. The glossy paper-covered boards binding is square and tight, with mild, uniform spine toning, the white print still clearly legible with plenty of contrast remaining. There is light overall soiling with most of the modest shelf wear confined to the spine ends and corners. The contents are bright, with no appreciable spotting. The first signature (the first six leaves) is still attached to the binding, but the binding cords are visible, the signature a bit loose. Dr. Seuss's inscription, inked in blue on the lower left front free endpaper verso, is bright and clean. Affixed to the lower left rear pastedown is the printed and illustrated ticket of "John Cole's Book & Craft Shop" in La Jolla, California, where this book was purchased and inscribed. The dust jacket is both bright and complete, with no loss and with the printed "295/295" intact on the upper front flap. Dust jacket wear is primarily confined to extremities, joints, and flap folds, with mild soiling evident only to the white rear face. We note faint, barely discernible vertical creases, right of center on the rear face and left of center on the front face. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover.ProvenanceThis book's life story is as compelling as the story within.In 1959, the family of the "Jill" to whom this book is inscribed moved from Los Angeles to Point Loma in San Diego a beautiful peninsula protecting San Diego's vaunted natural harbor. Point Loma is just a few miles south of La Jolla, the seaside promontory to which Dr. Seuss had moved in 1948, where he lived...

[Signed] [First Edition] Do You Know What I'm Going to Do Next Saturday? [Beginner Book B-31] Palmer, Helen with photographs by Lynn Fayman
1055.18 CAD
A very scarce signed copy of this photo-illustrated children's book written by Dr. Seuss's wife, Helen Marion Palmer Geisel. Palmer, a key executive over the Beginner Books imprint, collaborated on several picture books that explore the possibilities of using staged photographs as illustrations. The book is filled with the imagined, exaggerated exploits of a young boy, played by Rawli Davis, a kid the San Diego-based author and photographer discovered at an elementary school near their homes. Many young boys have fantasies about guns and shoot-outs but these are rarely indulged in modern childrens books. In this book, however, written as the Viet Nam War ramped up and the ranks of soldiers swelled at military training bases in Southern California, the protagonist hangs out with soldiers on a firing range and even takes part in a military parade (which required a little guerrilla action, with Rawli leaping in front of a parade without permission and posing just long enough for Fayman to take a shot). Helen Palmer was married to Dr. Seuss (Theodor "Ted" Geisel) for forty years. She, too, wrote children's books, often using the plausibly masculine name H. Marion Palmer as with her series based on Walt Disney films in the 1940s. She won an Academy Award with her husband for the documentary Design for Death in 1947. She co-founded the Beginner Books company in the 1950s and was one of three partners in the business. Beginner Books "wouldn't have flourished without Helen Palmer Geisel" (Paul V. Allen, I Can Read It All By Myself, p. 29). Palmer has been largely forgotten, eclipsed by the second Mrs. Geisel, Audrey Stone Dimond, a close friend of the Geisels with whom Ted began having an affair about the time Helen became seriously ill in the mid-1960s. Helen committed suicide in 1967. In her suicide note she asked her husband, "What has happened to us?" and then continued, "Your reputation with your friends and fans will not be harmed. Sometimes, think of the fun we had thru the years." Not long after Helen's death, Ted wrote in a letter, "My best friend is being divorced and I'm going to Reno to comfort his wife." As soon as Mrs. Dimond established residency in Nevada (the fastest way to get end a marriage in the 1960s), she filed for divorce and married Ted. First edition (earliest identifiable printing, priced 195/195 with 33 titles on the rear of the jacket). A very good copy with shelfwear to the bottom edge, in a very good dust jacket with wear to the spine ends. This copy is inscribed by the author and is very scarce thus?Helen Palmer signed few books?"To my dear Irish friends from Helen Palmer." NB: Beginner Books do not identify different printings. Many and perhaps most titles were reprinted with no changes. Over time, as additional books were published in the series, the dust jackets changed. The jacket on this title was revised to list 35 books (with part of the list in two columns, which is a way to tell the second printing without...

Kent's ability to excel in various fields is reminiscent of the Renaissance ideal of a well rounded individual. Kent had a willingness to express criticisms of popular policies of his time. He encouraged artists and writers to be independent and commit to their convictions. The New York Times characterized him as a "thoughtful, troublesome, profoundly independent, odd and kind man." His contribution to the art of book making in the United States further solidifies his place in literary history. Kent's unique signature, both as a writer and illustrator, has left a lasting imprint on the cultural landscape.

x, leaf, 432 pp; illus. Original cloth. For edges of pages foxed. Very Good, in dust jacket. First Edition. INSCRIBED BY LASZLO TISZA TO BENOIT MANDELBROT: "To Benoit / with pleasant recollection of our/ interaction some twenty odd years/ ago, and thanks for his gracious and grateful contribution to/ this volume/ Laszlo." Mandelbrot's contribution to this festschrift is the first one in the volume: "A Fractal Attractor, and Why It May Matter" (pp. 3-6). "Except in cases of extraordinary longevity, friendship with an older colleague is generally brief. Thus, it was a rare privilege that my friendship with the physicist László Tisza (1907-2009) lasted far longer than usual. He obliged by being born on 7/7/07 and the next 7/7/07 provided me with my only chance so far to talk to someone in the process of turning a hundred years old. The man was short, slight, retiring, and soft-spoken. Upon meeting him, I was told that he had been a well-known and productive researcher--in fact, had come close to fame by almost explaining a curious phenomenon called superfluidity of very low-temperature helium. However--as was added immediately--serious mistakes in that work had to be corrected by his onetime adviser, a star physicist named Lev Landau (1908-68). In truth, Tisza had made no mistake and deserved the credit he did not receive. Tisza was victimized by Landau, but lived long enough for this to be recognized. Instead of clamoring for full credit, he nominated Landau for a prize for this work. Tisza and I interacted intensely for a few years after a symposium on information theory held at MIT in the summer of 1956. The paper I presented there described an axiomatic for statistical thermodynamics that developed from the second half of my Ph.D. thesis. Asked to comment on my advance text, Tisza praised it handsomely and described himself, on this occasion, as being my student! Given the age difference, his words were a rarity--balm on my heart. Tisza was a hugely helpful professor. I was delighted to trigger an early celebration of his centennial. A large room was filled, a few people came from far away, and the mood was warm and altogether cheerful. His life had produced little needless sound and fury addressed to outsiders, and much reflection for his friends and his own pleasure. It extended late and added at least one solid brick to the permanent edifice of physics. Many mysteries remain open, but long live diversity. I was very moved" (The Fractalist, pp. 164-65; there is a section in The Fractalist entitled "Noam Chomsky and László Tisza."

[Signed] [First Edition] Tribute to Walter de la Mare, on his Seventy-fifth Birthday, Siegfried Sassoon's copy (who contributes) de la Mare, Walter;
991.02 CAD
London: Faber & Faber, 1948. First edition, first printing. This is a very good (or better) copy. The Barnett Freedman dust jacket is notably sharp and clean, with two chips at the top edge. It has not been price clipped (15s. net). Coloured lithographic frontispiece mirrors the jacket design. The boards are sharp in the original blue buckram with de la Mare s monogram in blind. The text blocks are a trifle spotted. This is Siegfried Sassoon's copy, with his monogram library label to the front pastedown. He contributes Salutation from an Old Friend to this tribute. Laid in are two typed letters from Richard de la Mare, the poet's son and Director at Faber & Faber on his headed paper. The first is dated April 22nd, 1948, and reads: My dear Siegfried, Here is the book at last. My father s birthday is on Sunday 25th and publication will take place on the Monday but I am hoping that there may be notices in the Sunday papers on the day itself. So far as I know the secret has been kept very well and I think the book will come to him as a complete and very happy surprise. I know he will be delighted to see your own poem among the others, as, needless to say, I am too myself. He is at Hove at the moment convalescing after his illness and I am hoping to go to see him there on Sunday, taking the book with me and the whole family! With love, Yours ever, Dick'. The second, dated May 6th, 1948, reads: 'My dear Siegfried, My father has had to give up hope for the present of even attempting to express his gratitude for everything that TRIBUTE has meant to him. As soon as he is well enough again he hopes to write personally. Meanwhile he is anxious to tell you that everything connected with this treasured book was a complete and perfect surprise to him: that he has shamelessly revelled in its pages ever since his birthday: and that its friendship and generosity have delighted and affected him more than words could possibly say. With love, Yours, Dick.' A nice pair of letters, in which Richard de la Mare describes the health of his aged father and his appreciation of Sassoon's contribution. 1535.18 CAD
Scarce signed artist's book from the artist most associated with the American and especially Southern California punk rock scene. Pettibon's indelible black-and-white images graced LPs and fliers for the likes of the Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedy's, Descendents, Germs, Hüsker Dü, Meat Puppets, Minutemen, Ramones, Sonic Youth, Subhumans,Throbbing Gristle, and (most famously) Black Flag - whose name the artist coined. Pettibon's brother Greg Ginn was guitarist for the band and founder of SST Records, under whose auspices most of Pettibon's early books were published and distributed. They unfortunately didn't sell well and according to the artist he destroyed most of the remaining copies, leaving only a hundred or so of each issue extant. Pettibon (who's also worked under the names Raymond Pettibone, St. Pettibone, Chuck Higby, Raymond Ginn, and Ray Dylan) remains one of the most provocative and vital artists working today, and one whose influence has grown far past his cult beginnings. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original black-and-white sadle-stapled pictorial self-wrappers. Offset printed. [28] pages, including covers. Numbered 14 in red ink by Pettibon, additionally signed in pencil by Pettibon to front cover. Bright and sound overall.
