[First Edition] Facing the Mountain: A True Story of Japanese American Heroes in World War II [FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING] Brown, Daniel James [First Edition] Facing the Mountain: A True Story of Japanese American Heroes in World War II [FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING] Brown, Daniel James 73.18 CAD As new condition blue boards with silver spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Praise for Facing the Mountain; List of Other Books by Daniel James Brown; Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quote by Rudy Tokiwa; Foreword; Author's Note; Prologue; Epilogue; Acknowledgments; Resources; Notes; Photo Credits and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps. "This is a masterwork of American history that will change the way we look at World War II. You don't just read a Daniel James Brown story - you go there. Facing the Mountain is lump-in-the-throat territory, page after page." - Adam Makos, author of A Higher Call. "This book's breadth and depth are unparalleled as it poignantly traces the Japanese American thread in the rich fabric of America. We meet compelling individuals, witness war's horrors, and celebrate moments of triumph of the human spirit. The author vividly describes communities confronting prejudice with resilience and patriotism, surviving, and ultimately having the opportunity to thrive." - Terry Shima, T/4, 442nd Regimental Combat Team. "From the author of The Boy s in the Boat comes a gripping World War II saga of patriotism and courage - the story of the special Japanese American army unit that overcame brutal odds in Europe while their families were incarcerated back home, and of a young man who refused to surrender his constitutional rghts, even if it meant imprisonment. Some came from farms and small towns and big cities across the mainland of the United States, and others came from Hawaii. Their parents taught them to embrace both their Japanese heritage and the ways of their American homeland. They faced bigotry, yet they believed in their bright futures as American citizens. But within days of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the FBI was banging on their doors, ransacking their houses, and locking up their fathers. And within months, many of these young men and their families would themselves be living behind barbed wire. Facing the Mountain is an unforgettable chronicle of wartime America and the battlefields of Europe. Based on Daniel James Brown's extensive interviews with the families of the protagonists as well as deep archival research, it portrays the kaleidoscopic journey of four Japanese American families and their second-generation young men - the Nisei - who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France, Germany, and Italy, where they were asked to do the near impossible in often suicidal missions. But this is more than a war story. Brown also tells the story of these soldiers' parents, immigrants who made their way in America only to be forced to shutter the businesses they had spent decades building, surrender their homes for pennies on the dollar, and submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil. Woven throughout is the chronicle of a brave young man, Gordon Hirabayashi, one of a cadre of...

[First Edition] Heroes of the Frontier - Dave Eggers First Edition 1st Printing Near Fine+ Dave Eggers [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover] [First Edition] Heroes of the Frontier - Dave Eggers First Edition 1st Printing Near Fine+ Dave Eggers [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover] 75.13 CAD Heroes of the Frontier is Dave Eggers' darkly comic and emotionally resonant novel of flight, survival, and fragile hope, set against the vast and unforgiving Alaskan wilderness. Following a mother and her two young children on a desperate road trip north, the novel blends absurdist humor with real peril including wildfires, isolation, and the quiet unraveling of modern American life - into a narrative that is both intimate and epic in scale. This First Edition, First Printing copy was published in 2016 by Alfred A. Knopf as a Borzoi Book. The volume is bound in striking silver-gray textured, pictorial boards, featuring a monochrome frontier landscape that echoes the novel's themes of endurance and stark beauty. The design is clean and modern, with textured blue endpapers that add a subtle tactile elegance. As issued, this title was published without a dust jacket. Condition is Near Fine+. The book is remarkably well preserved: pages are bright, clean, and entirely unmarked; the binding is tight and square, with a strong spine that suggests little to no reading wear. The boards remain crisp and fresh, with only the most negligible handling evidence. Overall, this is an especially sharp example of a modern Knopf first printing, well suited for collectors of contemporary literature. Dave Eggers is an acclaimed American author, editor, and publisher, best known for works such as A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, The Circle, and A Hologram for the King. He is the founder of McSweeney's and a cofounder of several educational and human-rights nonprofits. Eggers' writing is noted for its blend of humor, moral urgency, and deep empathy for contemporary life.

The first story of the Perseus section, for instance is much less explicit than the written detail given in, for instance, "Danaë, A Poem, "as told by T. Sturge Moore in the Vale Press edition of that name (See our No. 9730.) There are other differences as well in some of the textual details, but overall, this treatment, with its colorful plates of the work of Scottish artist, painter, engraver and designer Sir WILLIAM RUSSELL FLINT (1880-1969) makes for an immersive experience of wonder which matches the otherworldly glamor of the Greek Gods. Flint, born and educated in Edinburgh at Stuart 's Melville College, later studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. His work as a commercial illustrator included pieces in the Illustrated London News, posters, and a number of books, including a famous version of Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur (1910). He became President of the Royal Society of Watercolorists in later life, and was knighted in 1947.**British AUTHOR multi-talented novelist, social reformer and broad church Anglican priest, Charles Kingsley, mined his boyhood interests in geology and Darwinian scientific thought in the natural history details of this work. He also was influential in the Christian Socialist Movement, taught modern history at Cambridge, and became chaplain to Queen Victoria, among other accomplishments.**The RICCARDI PRESS was established by the Century Guild Hobby Horse co-founder, HERBERT HORNE (1864-1916). Riccardi produced a small number of fine press editions for the Medici Society between 1909 and 1923. These books employed the Horne-designed Riccardi typeface (14 pt.) and a special color collotype process for the richly detailed color plates referred to as the "Medici Process." Numerous gelatine coated plates were employed to approximate the high quality fine art detail and rich hues of the...
