[Signed] The War Powers Resolution: A Constitutional Crisis Ford, Gerald R. [Fine] [Hardcover]
285.18 CAD
Octavo, 109pp, [3]. Green cloth, title in gilt on spine, gilt facsimile signature of Ford on front cover. Signed by President Ford on the half-title. From a limited edition of 200 copies, this being number 25. A fine example. This publication was limited to 50 deluxe signed copies in quarter black leather, with a slipcase, and another 200 signed copies in full green cloth. Of the 50 deluxe leather-bound copies, President Ford, President Nixon, and Mrs. Ford received copies. They were all signed by President Gerald Ford on the half-title. This address by Gerald Ford was delivered at California State University and Butte College in 1991. It addresses the War Powers Resolution (War Powers Act), which was enacted by Congress in 1973 over President Nixon's veto. In reaction to wars like Vietnam and Korea, Congress passed a new law that required a president to seek a declaration of war from Congress before sending troops into combat. While this law has never been challenged in the Supreme Court, President Ford contended that it was unconstitutional and hindered the executive office's ability to defend the nation. President Clinton and President Bush both challenged the law with their actions in Kosovo and Iraq.

[Signed] March to the Gods that Heal and Other Stories [S.R.] Fairbairne McPhee [Near Fine] [Hardcover]

London, Boriswood, 1933. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A rare book. Boriswood seem to have printed a trade run and offered for sale an additional 15 copies signed. The present copy appears to be number six and is signed to the bottom of the first short titled Apologia. It's a weird place to sign a limited run, but given that the first piece is just a single page and title Apologia I presume that Fairbairne McPhee was apologising for something. Being somewhat inept at poetry interpretation, if my theory is correct then he's apologising for being a bit grim, or maybe rainbows. Either way, I have no idea. I can find nothing about the author but can add a little information to the dearth of extant knowledge in that he's signed the book S.R. Fairbairne McPhee (it could be S.L., but fairly confident on the S). Presented with the book is a little flyer from Boriswood announcing the author as spontaneous and varied, and that a famous author considers 'A Little Storm' to be ""perfect, quite perfect."" Give me a moment, and I'll let you know.I'm back. Yeah, I wouldn't describe it as perfect but it's interesting. It's South Africa. I'll quote: ""That night was love-night. That is what they both called it. He liked their love-nights [good to know], it was always restful [you're doing it wrong]. Once every two weeks [who needs spontaneity when you have rigorous schedules]: it wasn't much really [oh?]. Somehow, he wished she'd let him do all the arranging of love-nights [selfish]. The baby slept in a cot beside Pauline [creepy during love-night, but at least we know]. . And Pauline lay very still, too [love-night sounds super exciting]. She wished he would jump up, grasp her, and be very strong and violent [setting the sad trope of women loving violence aside, this is actually, for once, important to the plot]. But he kept motionless [actually, at this point I started to put my eye-rolling aside as I think this may be a story about domestic violence with a male victim]. He remembered how she had pulled his ears that one night when he had tried to force his love between meals, as it were [I'll level with you, I don't know what between meals here means. I thought I did until he wrote 'as it were', now I don't.] ""Sidney!"" ""Yes,"" his voice was faint from long habit. ""Move closer."" . He resigned himself to her and snuggled his face into her breasts . He wriggled his whole little body into her larger warmth, laughing, naughty, happy [ok, I'm not sure what's going on with that]. . She was always nice and always apologised to him on their love-nights. Well, we'll stop there because it starts to get even darker when Pauline meets Laya, seemingly their nanny/maid and ""little Kaffir girl about 15 years old"", there's a fair bit of abuse of Laya and Pauline also beats Sidney when she encounters Laya after she had run away. Well, cataloguing didn't go where I expected today. Some of the other stories seem vaguely speculative, perhaps in the vein of...

[Signed] Portrait of the Assassin (Signed First Edition, First Printing) Ford, Gerald R.; Stiles, John R. [Near Fine] [Hardcover]
430.18 CAD
Signed First Edition, First Printing of this biography that lends itself one of the strangest one line descriptions in history of biography -- the biography of the assassin of a U.S. President co-written by a future U.S. President. As a member of the House of Representatives, President Gerald Ford was selected to serve on the Warren Commission investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. As part of his duties, Ford was assigned to explore the biography of accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. The effort resulted in this detailed study of the life of the Commission-identified Lone Gunman, who was killed before facing trial. Signed by co-authors Gerald R. Ford and John R. Stiles on the front endpaper. Red cloth, 508 pages. No dust jacket. Minimal sign of previous use. Has a tanned area on the front endpapers where a period newspaper clipping about the release of the book had been stored.
[Signed] Portrait of the Assassin; With John R. Stiles Ford, Gerald R. [Capra, Frank] [Near Fine] [Hardcover]
1285.18 CAD
Octavo, 508pp. Red cloth, gilt title on spine. Stated ""first printing"" on copyright page. Top edge blue, clean pages. In the publisher's dust jacket, fine condition, $6.95 price on front flap. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: ""To Frank Capra, whose life and great achievements represent the best in America. With appreciation of our friendship and with admiration for your great accomplishments. Warmest personal best wishes, Jerry Ford."" A great association copy. Frank Capra (1897–1991) was an Academy Award winning film director, known for films such as: It Happened One Night (1934), which won five Academy Awards, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Capra won three Academy Awards for Best Director and was influential in shaping the narrative style of American cinema during its Golden Age. Capra was a longtime friend of Gerald Ford, retiring together in Ranch Mirage, California and frequently golfing together in celebrity tournaments. Shortly after the death of President John F. Kennedy, President Lyndon Johnson asked Chief Justice Earl Warren to head a presidential commission investigating the assassination of the president. What was formally known as the President's Commission quickly became known as the Warren Commission. Johnson asked a total of 7 people to serve on the commission, including the former Director of the CIA, Allen Dulles, and Michigan Representative Gerald R. Ford. Gerald R. Ford would go on to serve as President of the United States but would spend the rest of his life defending the lone gunman theory of the Warren Commission.

In the publisher's dust jacket, $6.95 price on front flap, small separation of glassine film from paper along front hinge, bright illustrations, a near fine example. Signed by Congressman Gerald R. Ford and co-author John Stiles on front free endpaper, dated ""6/7/65."" An excellent example. On June 7, 1965, Congressman Gerald R. Ford and his co-author, John R. Stiles, greeted his constituents in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. They were signing copies of this book, three days before it's public release date of June 10, 1965. There were four separate signing events around Grand Rapids on June 7th, including a book shop, the Pantlind Ballroom, Wurzburg's Department Store and Steketee's Book Department. The Governor of Michigan, George Romney, also received a signed copy of the book at a Kent County Republican Fundraiser the same afternoon.

Octavo, 8pp. Bound at top corner with staple. Blind stamp on last page. In custom blue cloth chemise, title in gilt on spine. Signed by President Gerald R. Ford next to title on first page. The Republican Convention of 1992 marked the end of an era for many prominent politicians of the 20th century. It would be the last major political speech by former President Ronald Reagan and the last convention attended by President Richard Nixon. At the convention, President George H.W. Bush and Vice President Quayle accepted their party's nomination for a second term, with President Gerald Ford offering a full endorsement in his speech.

1310.18 CAD
Octavo, [6], 159pp, [3]. Blue cloth, quarter black leather, title in gilt on spine and cover. Housed in the publisher's matching blue cloth slipcase, in fine condition. From a limited edition of 175 numbered copies and 26 deluxe copies signed by President George Bush. This book is a presentation copy, held back for the author and signed by President George H.W. Bush and former President Gerald R. Ford (pg. 57). A scarce piece. In November 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990, which raised several taxes—including increasing the top individual income-tax rate from 28 percent to 31 percent, raising the alternative minimum tax, and tightening high-income itemized deductions and exemptions—as part of a deficit reduction compromise. The decision directly contradicted his 1988 campaign pledge, ""Read my lips: no new taxes,"" frustrating many conservatives and damaging his credibility. This reversal became a central issue in the 1992 presidential campaign, where Democratic challenger Bill Clinton used it to question Bush’s trustworthiness, and many analysts cite Bush’s broken promise as a major factor in his defeat to Clinton.

Many of the copies in the Ford library bear the signature of President Ford or President Carter. This set is from the library of Paul O’Neill (1935-2020) who served as the 72nd U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from January 2001 to December 2002 under President George W. Bush. Before his government role, he was chairman and CEO of Alcoa from 1987 to 1999. O’Neill joined the Office of Management in Budget (OMB) in 1967, serving as its deputy director from 1974 – 1977, before returning to the private sector when Gerald R. Ford lost the 1976 election. O'Neill joined the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation in 1981, serving until his death in 2020. O’Neill was known for his outspoken views on economic policy and opposition to the Bush administration’s tax cuts. His tenure was marked by tensions with other officials, and he was asked to resign in December 2002. After leaving office, he criticized the administration’s decision-making process in the 2004 book The Price of Loyalty.
