Baldwin began his military service in 1861 with the 19th Michigan Infantry, notably leading a countercharge at the Battle of Peachtree Creek in 1864, where he captured two Confederate officers and a regimental guidon. His second Medal of Honor was awarded for a daring 1874 rescue mission at McClellan's Creek, Texas, where he led an attack against a numerically superior Native American force to save two young girls from captivity. Baldwin also served in the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War, eventually retiring as a major general in 1906. Each of these five titles were inscribed by Rodriguez and dated April 21st, 1989, a decade after the note which is dated 1979. It seems Rodriguez and the MacAulay's were only recently acquainted in 1979 but nevertheless the note is written with warmth. It is written on La Trobe University Department of English letterhead and reads, ""Dear Bettina and Des, Forgive me if I've spelt both your name wrong, can't find it (as in Qld Art Gallery Publication) so trust to luck. It was good meeting you; and these stickers seem a poor return for the truly splendid catalogue. Riley and L'Allegro - what and where next? It will be a welcome meeting, whenever. All best wishes, yours very sincerely, Judith."" It bears a Queensland Art Gallery "" Received"" stamp dated September 13, 1979. The inscriptions were all made on the same day and while it is impossible to know in which order they were penned, they seem sensible when read in reverse order, beginning with New and Selected Poems and ending with nu-plastik fanfare. New and Selected Poems, ""For Desmond MacAulay with best wishes Judith Rodriguez 21.4.89"" Mudcrab at Gambaro's, ""Back with the Muddies at QAG. The MacAulays had significant careers in exhibition curation and publishing in Australia. Desmond amassed an impressive poetry collection over his lifetime. His focus was contemporary poetry, but his collection reached back to the seventeenth century.
