Inscribed first edition, association copy, of this effort to unpuzzle Joyce's famously inscrutable masterpiece - signed to the famed Jungian analyst Erlo Van Waveren. Erlo Van Waveren practiced psychotherapy in New York with his wife Ann for more than four decades. Both studied with Carl Jung and were regular attendees at the Jung Institute. Campbell himself was famously influenced by Jung (and edited an edition of his work), an influence heavily reflected in this, Campbell's first book, which investigates Joyce's "monomyth," an idea deeply indebted to the renowned psychologist's idea of the "collective unconscious." The van Waverans were also instrumental in the establishment of the Bollingen Series, which published Campbell's most important work THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES. It was Elro and Ann who introduced Paul and Amy Mellon (benefactors of the series) to Jung, after whose Bollingen Tower the series was named and whose work served as its driving influence. A warm and significant association. 8'' x 5.25''. Original green cloth boards. Original price-clipped yellow printed dust jacket. [2], xiv, 366, [2] pages. Inscribed by Jung on the front endpaper: "For / Erlo Van Waveren / unconscious and all / from / Joseph Campbell." Jacket with touches of sunning, edgewear. Couple of faint spots of soll. Spine and front panel mildly sunned. Book has slight lean. Overall, bright and sound. Near fine in a very good plus jacket.

"Senator Bob Graham had more wisdom than I when he said that going into Iraq would take our focus off Afghanistan. Graham is able to present a narrative about the threats we face in an exciting and fast-paced novel. Read this book and you will become more expert in understanding our dangerous world." - Jane Harman, former Congresswoman nad President, CEO, and Director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. His novel throbs with the heart-pounding urgency of its memorable characters." - Rolf Mowatt-Larssen, former senior CIA Operations Officer and Director of the Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence for the U.S. Dept. of Energy. "Former Senator John Billington knew writing this New York Times op-ed piece might get him killed. : 'July 6th The congressional inquiry into the 9/11 attacks left several secrets unanswered. The top three are Saudi Arabia's full role in the preparation for and the execution of the plot; the Kingdom's willingness and capacity to collaborate in future terrorist actions against the United States; and why this and the prior administration conducted a cover-up that thus far has frustrated finding the answers to the first two questions. Now, there is an even more ominous unknown. Does Saudi Arabia have the bomb?.The United States should take prompt action to prevent this potential conflict from becoming a reality.' Shortly after this appears in print, his suspicion comes true: Senator Billington, a co-chair of the 9/11 Congressional Inquiry Commission, is murdered near his Florida home. Sensing the danger he faced before he was murdered, Billington left ex-Special Forces operative Tony Ramos detailed instuctions for an investigation into Saudi complicity in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Now Ramos, in conjunction with Billington's daughter Laura, must uncover a shocking international conspiracy linking Saudi Arabia - the Kingdom - to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, in a race against time that will span Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. But will Ramos and his team be able to stop al-Qaeda from unleashing...

[Signed] [First Edition] Laugh With Me - Presentation Copy to Marshal of the RAF Lord Portal, Privately Printed WAKE, Major-General Sir Hereward
1077.35 CAD
WAKE, Major-General Sir Hereward. Laugh With Me. Privately printed, 1946. First edition, first impression. Privately printed presentation copy from the author to Charles Portal. Quarto. Original patterned paper wrappers, printed title label to upper cover in red and black, plain spine, illustrated with line drawings and comic sketches, contents printed on good quality paper. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To a distinguished Air Marshal / from the author / Hereward Wake / 1948." A rare privately printed collection of verse, parody, sporting pieces, family jokes and country-house humour by Major-General Sir Hereward Wake, 13th Baronet, CB, CMG, DSO. Wake states in the opening note that the book was not issued for the public market, but privately printed for those within his family and friendship circle: "So I launch my rhymes into print just for those of my family and friends who can put up even with parody so long as they are reminded of good days and how we laughed." This copy comes from the personal collection of Marshal of the Royal Air Force Charles Frederick Algernon Portal, 1st Viscount Portal of Hungerford, Chief of the Air Staff during the central years of the Second World War. Wake and Portal do not appear to have served in the same unit or direct command, but their worlds clearly overlapped within Britain's senior defence establishment. Wake was a decorated King's Royal Rifle Corps officer, won the DSO in the Second Boer War, and served during the First World War in the secretariat of the Allied Supreme War Council at Versailles, where his work concerned enemy strength and supply. In the Second World War he returned to national service as commander of the Northern Home Guard from 1940 to 1943, while Portal, appointed Chief of the Air Staff in 1940, directed the RAF through the main strategic air war. Wake also chaired the Northamptonshire Territorial Army Association, placing him firmly within the wartime home-defence establishment. A charming and highly personal survival, made more important by its presentation to one of Britain's foremost wartime commanders. Near fine, with bright wrappers, clean label, crisp contents and only light handling. Extremely rare in commerce, and especially desirable with Portal provenance.
